TRD Quick Shifter Discussion
So I just got back from the Toyota dealer doing my 22.5k mile warranty maintenance and I figured I would ask them to install the following TRD Quick Shifter:
http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/trd-...-kit-1465.html They wanted to charge me 260 at a 106 hour rate. I felt like that price was insanely high for assembling what is only 3 parts in the tiny box. The TRD Quick Shifter is not a complete assembly replacement so I am now thinking of taking this on myself. Has anyone installed this specific quick shifter and care to open a discussion of the assembly for this piece? |
do it yourself..takes aobut 15-30min top get all things done and finish.
|
Do it yourself, I did it in about 30min. Nothing difficult in the install
|
Would recommend doing it yourself too. Also recommend having swivel extensions and/or sockets.
Only hard part was getting the stock boot off without ripping it. |

Only thing that may be a pain is you need to be under the car... |
Don't you lose the TRD/dealer warranty if you install it yourself?

yes re installing the stock boot is like putting on a condom in the dark, drunk, in a hurry , whilst falling down a flight of stairs. :eyebulge: |

Been very helpful. The printed instructions do go into depth but since this is a first for me I was hoping there was a video telling me where everything is so I may reference it with the printed material. I'll give it a shot this weekend once I get some stands to jack this bastard up.

Well if ever your in the HBRG area I'll give you a hand!
|
If you have installed it, what kind of benefits have you seen? Any difference in feel?
Thanks, |
Ok, so i just ordered mine from ebay / toyota dealer for $150
Getting it tomorrow / monday June 30 /2014 And i was looking for a diy to get an idea but i winded up finding this [ame]http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8445SoYm3T8[/ame] I'm a bit sketched on this, Sad to say or kinda mean, but i seriously hope this guy messed it up himself? Or failed the install? Broke something? Cause if thats how loose it really is, I'm a bit dissappointed... Anyone who has this installed can verify? Please and thanks! |

I've seen the throw -- the guy in this vid most likely ripped something or bent something the wrong way. there's not THAT much play to the shifter in gear. |

TRD QUICK SHIFTER UPDATE
As I posted in another TRD QS Thread I got mine for $136.42 !!!
Was going to install it myself but the Holiday messed me up . I work at a shop with 4 Lifts but we were Closed for 4 days. I call my Toyota/Scion Dealership I bought my car from. They said Saturday @ 10:00 am ! I was quoted an Hour ,but there had not done 1 yet ! They wind up keeping it 1/2 the day ! I was really pissed getting the run around on my day off ! Talked to the SM and he got me a Rental Car "for free" Then cut my Bill in half {$50.00 } for the Headache . Well so far I dig it,but it was Not as Big a Deal as I had been lead to believe. For under $200 installed I can't Bitch:thanks: !!! |
Did you guys actually use the hex key that the TRD instructions asked for?
That's the only thing I don't have, and I don't really want to get one if it isn't absolutely necessary... |

Been a while, but it looked like this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...AL._SX342_.jpg So, good luck getting it off without that. Just buy a cheapo set at your local parts store, something like a pack of 10 for probably $8 or less. |
Yup, just get a ball-ended hex socket from Lowes or something. It's only a couple of bucks.
I've uploaded the instruction guides onto another thread before, for those who are on the fence about buying and installing it themselves: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=245 |
Honestly, I couldn't find any of my ball-ended hex keys, and it was going to take a week for the local autoparts store to order one( and it had to be ordered in a kit). The guy at the counter didn't even know what I was talking about at first. I had to describe it in detail and then he had to look it up. Anyway, I just bought a regular hex socket and found it worked perfectly fine. Not sure why you would need the ball end.

Installed yesterday and while the throw is shorter, it takes a lot of effort to get the car in gear. Thought the moving joints needed grease, but even after grease its still really hard to shift. This goes beyond any "cold start wait till it warms up" shifting problems. I took the pieces apart again and made sure everything was lined up correctly, but still have a very hard time shifting. Any ideas?
|
Just use it. It will get smoother.
|
You can use a regular allen wrench or one of the allen headed sockets (which I prefer).

I used them no problems, even took the bolt out to put some blue loctite on it with them. If you leave the shifter in neutral or put it in 5th/6th it gives u more room.
|
I just installed the kit tonight and am having similar amounts of slack as mentioned in one of the earlier videos. Does anyone have some tips for tightening the adapter bolt? That one was a PITA to tighten and it looks like I need to tighten it even more.

mine had enough slack, and eventually i could not get into 1st or 2nd. turned out the bolt backed out. you may need to add red loctite, as what it came with did not work.
|
Figured out I made a mistake in installing the adapter initially, fixed it and now the slack is largely gone. Feels great and was just what I was looking for
|
I got mine installed a few days ago. Not a bad decision! :D
|
Installed and it's very stiff to shift but I liked it...lol
