Exhaust on a budget

I'm looking to change my exhaust soon, but there is one problem for me... I have a budget of $700 max. I've been searching around and apparently the Invidia N1 seems to be a good choice so far, but I hear it creates a lot of drone. I use my FR-S as a DD so I'm looking for something that won't give me a headache while driving below 3k rpm, but has a good tone once you hit the pedal. Also, I drive AT if that makes a difference. Any recommendations?

BRZ? 06-26-2014 02:14 AM

The answer is always Q300...

Ah well looks like I'm sold. This sounds good and is only a couple bucks more

Spend it on a header instead.

+1 on that, header is where the power is the cat back for sound

martinEZ 06-26-2014 12:55 PM

I got the Takeda catback for ~$600 a while ago and love the sound... only comes in 2.5" however... so if you plan on pushing a lot of boost later down the road, it might not be for you...

Spend it on an OFT or OFH....quiet power is better than a loud turtle....

boredom.is.me 06-26-2014 01:03 PM

I got my Tsudo CB and FP for $550. There isn't any drone. You do hear it from in the cabin (after about a month of driving), but it isn't annoying. Compared to nearly all other exhausts I've heard, it is quiet, but even the stock exhaust can wake up the quietest neighborhood on cold start.

2.5" supports a good amount of horsepower for most boosted people even. 3" is for the extreme 400-500 hp ones.

cheap exhaust mod. really pleased with results( mach 5 rep)

Had an exhaust made by a local shop , had a flange made so it would be a direct bolt on if I ever wanted to run the stock exhaust. It's essentially a muffler delete with a single tip exit from left exhaust well. Felt a difference in pick up when combined with k@n drop in. YouTube video under : " 2014 brz tinted tail lights muffler delete. A 3k rev 5k rev and hit the limiter for 2 seconds towards the end.

Just unbolt everything from the heads back, and remove it. Spend the money on an e85 tune and call t a day...

For real thought, get a high quality long tube equal length HEADER..

BadBRZ 06-26-2014 09:29 PM

Btw cat backs provide NO more pwdr than stock, header does, header also changes the exhuast note

This one also sounds good... I'm stuck again between the Q300 and this one.

Also to everyone telling me to get a header, I am looking for something that I can rev and just show some friends how good it sounds or just hit 74xx RPM when I'm driving to smile. I don't plan on adding any real performance mods till after I get my degree.

you get sound as well with a header, kind of a no brainer really.

The way I see it, a cat back completes one of the most aesthetically significant portions of any car, the sound.

When I took delivery, even in stock form, the 86 is marvelous but its overly restrictive muffler and almost comically small exhaust tips just made it look weird. I have to say that a good catback will do wonders for your driving experience, even if it doesn't increase power.

Agreed! I can't find any videos of the exhaust with everything else stock. I have seen some Q300 videos sound good and some were quiet.

Manzo Cat back! there are two version. I have the V.2 and will be installing it tomorrow. Its 2.75" diameter so better than 2.5 but not quite 3. You could get there front pipe as well, maybe, depending on price.

I bought a used one, and the quality is really good. Welds look good, material holds up really well. It is not the lightest exhaust but I'm looking forward to a sounds that is a little bit louder than stock but doesnt drone on the highway.

PM me if you want me to send you some photos and sound clips. I have pics of the system now and will have sound clips hopefully by noon tomorrow

Manzo catback

Hey for $835 we put on a PLM overpipe and frontpipe with a freeflow cat and a Manzo catback. Fitment on all was excellent. Sound is excellent. Could not be happier with the budget header back exhaust.

toeout 06-28-2014 04:09 PM

- $110 Magnaflow muffler

- $18 flange

- $52 muffler tip

- $50 labor for welding at the local muffler shop

Dual exit is about $20 more for the muffler + another muffler tip.

SMMFH

if you want to make it faster on the cheap you can also take your interior, hood, doors, front fenders and trunk off for weight reduction. I hear removing the air filter also helps free up flow, and for the extreme enthusiast just unbolt the exhaust manifold flanges and drop teh whole system. That would drop weight AND free up and excess back pressure

I'm assuming "SMMFH" stands for Shake My Mother Fucking Head?

If so, why the hell are you posting? He was able to do something cheaper than what most of us pay to have done from a big company. Do you feel better that you have a muffler shop do your exhaust the exact same way, yet you pay probably 6 times more than he did? Sometimes doing it this way is much more beneficial.

God, some people are just such pretentious assholes on here.

mike the snake 06-28-2014 08:11 PM

THIS!!!! Catback can be done for next to nothing, just like this exhaust. I did this on my last car and couldn't have been happier. Any good muffler shop can make you a comparable system like this one for cheap.

Sounded as good as any high dollar system for $200. Then take the money you saved and put it towards another mod, maybe a header or tune.

Muffler - Magnaflow 12586 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-12586

Muffler tip - Red Tail Performance RTP-38B

Flange - 2.5 " flange username customfabshopcom on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Bolt-Unive...3D131178038815

Just a fair warning - with a stock header this muffler is even quieter than stock. I bought this to tame the JDL UEL and it is perfect for that. Straight through design too.

i'm not butt hurt, it just shows the difference between average Subaru owner and average scion owner... yes our cars are almost the same but the type of person that buys each definitely are not the same...

Yup, because I had the chance to buy one or the other and I chose the Scion. That says soooo much about me right? It's not because I got a great deal because my dad works for the company, or it's not because I enjoy dealing with Toyota corporate so much more than Subaru.

My opinion is invalid, you're right.

Badbrz, your posts are saying SO much more about you that this man's choice in cars and exhausts.

Exhausts for my last car started around $1400, I had my local muffler shop whip up this exhaust for my 135i for under $200 and it sounded every bit as good as the expensive exhausts, and saved maybe 35 pounds compared to the BMW performance exhaust.

yes, yes i did. now lets see how that exhaust looks after two winters of snow and salt.

see if the money saved is money worth.

My exhaust on my "srt" (it wasn't an srt if you noticed) was still 1200 dollars, stainless steel mandrel bend 3" from turbo back.

I'm giving you shit b/c it's a shame to see people cutting corners on these cars when they deserve so much better. This isn't your moms hand me down civic or used altima. It's going to be kids like that who half ass mods to save money that will make these cars known as trash 10 years from now when half of em have crap on it like that exhaust..

but hey like i said, typical scion owners, fortunately not all are like you just the 51%

Sorry i hold these cars in such high esteem

your cars do as you wish, just try to have some self respect and do things right

So wait, saving a little bit of money by paying local people that you see every day ISN'T a win-win? I'm not sure if you realize, but nothing on this guy's particular exhaust is cheap shit like you say it is. Just because it doesn't have "Perrin" or "Greddy" stamped all over it doesn't mean its cheap garbage.

Sometimes, and I mean SOMETIMES, you get more than what you pay for. Especially when you do business in person. If you use good quality pipe and parts, you'll have a one of a kind product that surpasses the quality of a high volume product.

And I own a BRZ.

You do understand that the exhaust you are paying for is reproduced the exact same way this guy's was, right? A muffler shop mocked it up, welded it, then sold it in mass production. I have over a $2,500 full exhaust on my car. I'm not bragging, but I'm just telling you because I understand that I could've done a lot of stuff with just a muffler shop like this guy did. I just chose not to.

The welds are rough, but the bends are fine.

Whatever, I'm not going to argue with you. There's no point to it.

Can't believe diss7 was banned and elitist college "ricer" bros on a high horse trying to be the token forum comedian (funny sometimes but grossly uneducated at other times) talking down to people, purely because they don't have the same opinion. The irony really.
