Fool Tryin' To Race Me...
Just cruising down the blvd today and a 350Z tried to get me to race. I am too old for that. It was just funny to me b/c that's the first time that ever happened to me. Wonder if it was the sound of my Nameless exhaust that encouraged him. Or maybe just the Hot Lava color. I used to have an '07 Z and never got that. Any other "mature" drivers here that have been called out? lol. Yeah, I'm old. I know this isn't a straight line car, but I started thinking I need to supercharge this thing so I don't get punked all the time.

Some kids were revving at me and reversing then slamming their gas and then brake pedals at me behind a mcd's drive through. I wish i had a sc or turbo some times but I still love my 86 :)

Yeah, I guess you're right on the age thing. Sorry to assume.

Also, I like how morons take the safe easy way of showing their vehicular dominance by trying to race cars that aren't comparable! A FR-S vs 370Z? Come on!! That'd be like a FR-S smoking lesser (performance wise) cars like the tC, regular Civics (a Si would be more comparable) and Golfs -big deal winning a knife fight with a gun. What's the point of performance mods? If you wanted faster then do your research and spend more initially on a faster car. Mods: Reduce reliability over time Require more maintenance Void your warranty All cars depreciate by the minute, unless you track the car you can't legally take full advantage Bragging rights? Is CEL hunting worthwhile? Is having to go back to stock for dealer visits or trading in worthwhile? If the manufacturer could have squeezed out extra horsepower while maintaining reliability don't you think they would have done it? Save your money for a better car, rainy day, or anything else -with this economy You never know. |
I had the same thing happen on my way to visit some friends yesterday. Only this was a Chevy Volt of all things.

Choose your foes wisely...
Racing on the streets is foolish at any age. |
Not exactly being taunted to race, but last weekend I had a Hyundai Getz overtaking me aggressively from the wrong side at the traffic light. Was tempted to chase that idiot and took him over but then I thought meh not worth the risk.
For you guys in US I don't think you have Hyundai Getz:http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Getz It's one of those entry level Hyundai with 0-60 miles in around 15 seconds or so. I must say some people get aggravated (or jelly) when they see 86 driving normally and they just had to be a douche. |
Here is an example of what I repeatedly get harassed by on the hwy's around Chattanooga:
http://www.thedieselgarage.com/forum...2&d=1281302902 My assumption is that after wasting all that time/money in fuel and modification cost they believe that racing a sports car will somehow make them feel like it was well spent... Here is how I respond through interpretive hand signaling: http://31.media.tumblr.com/10ad0b28a...4eoho1_400.gif Racing on public roads is for jerkoffs... |

Once by a brand new Corvette with the temporary tag still on it. Once by a WRX. Once by a shitty Honda with a body kit that was falling off. Yesterday I got challenged by a Scion XB on the freeway, and three times now Scion tCs have made nuisances of themselves.
Since I drive a lot of long distances on the interstate, my biggest problem is people pacing me to try to get me to race. They'll match my speed and block me in when we come up on slower traffic, then slow down when I pull in behind them. If I speed up to go around, they speed up. The world is full of douchebags. |

And unfortunately there are quite a bit of people on the road who think that if you drive normally and obey speed rules, you're a moron/bad/wimpy driver. |

Yeah exactly - not worth it. If any you should feel sorry for those fools.

I get that a lot too. I don't usually drive long distances during the week, but I tend to take long trips every weekend. All I can think is, dude, just leave me be. |
Happens to me once a week or so. I usually ignore them, sometimes I'll race even if i know i'll lose just to see how fast the car is. Raced a heavily modded Boss 302 last week and it completely destroyed me. Sounded beautiful though

Personally, I find street racing to be idiotic. Let's put aside the fact that you're forcing people who aren't part of it (pedestrians, other drivers, etc.) to be at risk.
The way street racing is done doesn't take any skill. It's mostly from a roll. When it's from a stop, there's rarely a launch involved. Where's the fun in that? It's just: (1) mash pedal, (2) car with more HP wins. And on top of that, if you get caught by a cop, you lose your license or worse. From a risk/reward standpoint, it's actually pretty dumb IMO. |
Jettas.... always Jettas, and not even a semi respectable GTI. Tinted windows helps ignore people though. I just drive around in "econo" mode most of the time. If someone is really persistent I hand them a schedule for autocross, and tell them street racing is about as ricer as it gets, and real drivers don't do it. :)
Had a porsche 911 challenge me one day, I told him he already won... made me feel good though. |
People obviously spot our cars from a distance, and their ego is instantly diminished as whatever car they are driving is not as alluring and sexilicious as our twins. SO, to make up for their insecurities, they need to lime light shining on them, so they rev, make a loud noise, etc. etc. no different than some attention whore screaming for attention!
Our cars are meant to be driven at cruise-like speeds so that people can stop-and-stare at the magnificent work that is our GT86/FRS/BRZ. Cruise on people. Let them ALL admire. |
Already a thread for this http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28502

I actually get the exact opposite in the 86...people will pull up beside me at a red light, ask if it's fast and that it's a sexy car. When I reply "it's pretty quick" I almost always get "wait I'm not trying to race, I was just asking"
Now...my eclipse on the other hand, I get the typical Hondas, GTis, and cobalts trying to race...I just let the turbo spool for a second and usually they stop. |
Do people actually get revved at stoplights? It must be really often cause I am on a couple car forums and people always encounter this sort of stuff. That has never happened to me nor have I seen that happen to someone else. I would start to laugh like a idiot if that happened to me, so movie like lol :bellyroll:
|
Not 10 minutes after I drove her off the lot I had some jackass in a lifted turbo diesel truck revving at me at a redlight.
Woof. |

Love it especially when the older generations have this really interested look on their face when they pull up beside my 86, while carefully examining the car and then following that with a nice compliment. :happyanim: |
I dont support street racing, but some of you sound a little anal about it. Theres always gonna be idiots street racing or trying to race you.
I just say if you have to race on the streets know where and what your getting into, Get as far away from busy public areas as you can. I'm sure a lot of us have gone over the speed limit in our cars especially when we add that new part. *news flash running windy back roads is still street racing but a lot of us still do it..people have died doing that to Just my 2 cents lol |

I consistently tell people how slow my car is. That usually stops any ideas of a race.

30 Y.O. semi-mature driver
Where I live, pickup trucks will almost always race you at the lights. I'll usually only go up to redline in first gear though. Dont need any more speeding tickets. |

I rev to redline at every light, pop it in 5th gear and dump the clutch.

I wonder if that's how athletes feel when kids tell them they're their idol. |
Civics and integras usually don't bother me. It's the 350s, Gs, Genesis, and SRTs that will always try to race me at every stoplight. I just look at them and laugh.

Fool Tryin' To Race Me...
5 instances. One buddy in a mid 90's CRx. Believe it or not he held on pretty well. One guy in a lifted 3500 with a TON of engine mods. Had me going into a curve, then as a went by him in said curve l decided to back off as l saw his ego putting his beautiful truck up on the 2 outside wheels. He almost lost it. Brand new Si, smoked him. Gti 1.8T. He murked me. GT convertible.....dead even.
The kid in me came out as those were the only encounters l've had in 18 months of ownership. None of thi is bragging. Just answering the question. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If you want to get known in the streets for being fast take it to the track. Eventually your rep will get out there and you will become known in the streets.
I got this co worker who swears his Chrysler 300 is fast and is all about street racing. One thing he doesn't realize is, in the street you have to be careful you don't crash your car or hurt someone. On the track, you ain't shit, no one holds back, people invest time learning the racing line, less on how to make HP and you can drive much faster than you think you can on the streets. What my co worker doesn't realize is that there is more to racing that just racing in the street for ***** points. I told him if you want to test your skills go to the track and get whooped on by a low powered car then tell me how fast you are. |
I met another crazy this weekend. If you remembered I posted that I had someone in shitty Hyundai "smoked" my car.
Well last weekend I was driving and changing lane to my left like normal people (was going to make left turn soon) and this stupid woman in Toyota Yaris suddenly overtook me literally just a few metres from the left turn and then she started driving at normal speed again after the left turn. Just FYI I didn't do reckless lane switch. I thought okay, mental woman, just leave it. I was then driving on a different lane and my lane was faster than hers and she must have seen me passing her and she actually sped up and took me over again before driving like normal again in front of me. I thought WTF is wrong with her. Then the third time I passed her from the lane next to her but I had to merge to her lane (in a normal way) and I knew she was gonna flip and I could see her from my rear view mirror approaching fast from behind and this time she tried to overtake me from the wrong side of the lane in a dangerous way (there was car in front of her lane which was also in front of me). I knew instantly what she was about to do. She was gonna force her way in to my lane in that tight gap and make me do a defensive brake. But I thought fuck that shit. So when her car was next to mine, I punched it and equalled my speed to hers so that she couldn't do jack and after that I kept my speed and slalomed through the traffic. I could see it from rear view mirror that she was trying to give chase but cmon man it's a fuckin Yaris. So obviously she couldn't catch me and I disappeared into different way. I can tell she must be pissed royally that she couldn't keep up. I know I shouldn't have sped up but I was in a bit of bad mood too. No glory in owning an obviously underpowered Yaris but the point is there are all sort of crazy people out there regardless of how shit the cars they drive. |
