Sold my 86 already

In fact, I haven't even took delivery of the car and I've already sold it! Well, its not that I didn't want to take delivery of the car, but I've just been so busy the past month, I've only been home for about 2 days. So I never even got a chance to check it out. Either way, the next 6 months I'll be flying a lot so I'm pretty sure my car will just sit in my garage depreciating. I might as well sell it for a nice profit before I take delivery.

Anyways, the car is just incredibly popular here in HK. Especially with the price being quite attractive. The waiting list is now up to November (since I've already ordered another one, they say 6MT might be available sooner, I do hope so!) since my car is ready to be delivered, the car was sold with just 1 phone call!

I hope the new owner will enjoy the car! I guess I just have to patiently wait for another 6 months before I pick up the car!

serith 05-24-2012 11:28 AM

How much profit did you make?

YinYang1980 05-24-2012 11:46 AM

10k loll

YW-Slayer 05-24-2012 12:19 PM

Uh, congratulations?

Yeah, I can see demand for the FR-S going through the roof here. Richburg quoted me HK$420K for what looked like a base AT model. I'm having some second thoughts about my BRZ (deposit with Subaru) but as they haven't cashed my cheque yet I'm just going to wait and see.

Godzpeed 05-24-2012 12:48 PM

i sold mine at 430k for my sport 6MT (GT trim), paid 355k at Toyota HK :D

so almost 10k USD profit... its hard to say no, especially I'm in no rush to get one now.

Has Subaru announce the price yet? I might as well put another deposit down for a BRZ at the same time and see which one comes sooner!

YW-Slayer 05-24-2012 10:07 PM

Wow... OK, yeah, even assuming the price of my BRZ is HK$380K, if someone offered me HK$430K for my BRZ, I'd almost certainly sell my place in the queue. Like you, I'm not in a rush to get the car (a depreciating asset), particularly as I already have a Legacy (B4, BL chassis) which I only drive around once a week. Plus I could definitely put HK$50K toward something else, like another mountain bike, investment, and/or some wine. :D

Don't think they've announced the price yet. They have had my cheque since mid-April, and said they'll call when they know the price, but I haven't heard from them since. Even back then it was claimed that at the rate things were going with the Toyota orders, you'd probably get a BRZ before a GT86 if you put a deposit down on both on the same day (in mid-April).

bestwheelbase 05-24-2012 10:17 PM

Geez dude I don't know what you're in to but good on ya! :party0030:

Buy a t-shirt.

YW-Slayer 06-02-2012 12:03 AM

Got the call from Subaru today. HK$418,000 (inc. free rear spoiler as otherwise a cost option) for the top-end version, with only 1 MT WRB coming in on this batch. A other people are in line, I will need to confirm this weekend whether I want it. Going in in the afternoon to look at the details and confirm.

What do yo guys think? It is a bit more than I thought it would be (assumed it would be HK$400K) but I think I can still stretch to it. Have briefly been distracted by secondhand Elises - new ones a bit too rich for my blood - but think I'll probably end up going for the BRZ.

REPRESENT

Although I suppose if someone wants to offer me HK$480K for it...

ZmZMWagon 06-02-2012 12:52 AM

Lmao.....some greedy salesman will now red this thread and mark up their cars 10k claiming "worldwide high demand"

Godzpeed 06-02-2012 01:11 AM

thats way too much of a premium over the 86 Sport + (GT Limited). It virtually offer nothing extra over the 86 other than a Subaru badge!

ppl are flipping their June quotas for around 20k HKD. I'm thinking if i should pick this car up in June. Cuz in the end i'll still have made money and get the car!!! I'm not even sure if I should keep the parts I already ordered, or sell it... its taking up space in my stock room LOL

ichitaka05 06-02-2012 01:31 AM

This kinda reminds me... what happen to that dude that was selling his FR-S in ebay? Anyone bought it? Anyone know?

Wow $32.5k for 900 added miles and dash pulled and wires spliced for an aftermarket nav unit. Quite a premium for some "additions." I don't see anything outstandingly special between this First 86 and the non-First 86 cars that came out a few weeks later other than the latter are in newer condition, selling for less, and their increasing abundance will only make it harder for a flip to happen. :iono: I feel sorry for the seller... sometimes it's hard to see outside your tunnel vision and view your sale realistically from the general consumers' perspective.

Gotta commend the HK sellers on this thread... their quick turn around at least shows they're flipping it right.

Yeah, I know it's a huge premium, but there is no way I'm going to get a Toyota version if there is a Subar version! Ha ha.

I think they're out of stock on BRZs though. Mine is only due in in late Aug/early Sept. The LAUNCH will be in June/July.

Turbowned 06-02-2012 10:19 AM

DAMN! $418k HKD is almost $54k USD. We are getting these cars CHEAP in the United States!!!

Not to mention conversion to RHD!:bellyroll:

phm14 06-02-2012 01:01 PM

Seems there are always fools waiting to over pay when a new product comes out. Most probably have buyers remorse after the hype and prices fall off in short order.

we pay around 50% tax on the cars

the price before tax is probably cheaper than what u are getting

Turbowned 06-02-2012 03:51 PM

Whaaaaat? Wow, that's pretty absurd.

n8dog11914 06-02-2012 04:05 PM

I travel to Hong Kong twice a year for work. I'm an engineer for a toy company and we make all our products in southern China (Shenzen). I love visiting HK on the weekends. It's an amazing city with lots to do and see. Although, I would never want to drive a BRZ or FR-S around HK....

On the road up the Dragon's Back, now that's a different story.....any of you guys driven on that road or any of the roads that go up to the Peak? :)

YW-Slayer 06-02-2012 10:15 PM

The tax on cars is there because cars are a luxury product. You can get around HK perfectly well, and for next to nothing (compared to most developed countries), using public transport. The tax is a sliding scale tax, so I think the part of a car which costs over HK$300,000 is taxed at 75%.

On the plus(?) side, environmentally-friendly cars get a tax discount. This sometimes leads to odd situations, for example the Q7 333hp which actually costs about HK$50K (I think) less than the Q7 272hp even though they had the same engine. I think it was because the 333hp model had some Euro V tweaks which meant that it satisfied some CO2 to weight ratio and/or fuel efficiency limit: http://www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/en...e_cars.html#3b

Sadly, the only Subarus which qualify for this at the moment are the R1 and the R2.

I am very keen to drive one around HK. I think it's almost the perfect city for it actually. I do drive on the roads you have mentioned (particularly the latter). However, I usually prefer biking. Mountain biking on the Dragon's Back, road cycling on the road (Shek O Road) and right up to the garden at the top of the Peak. There are also other good roads which you obviously haven't had the chance to check out!

phm14 06-02-2012 10:56 PM

So I take it the "luxury" tax isn't re-assessed when the car is re-sold?

YW-Slayer 06-02-2012 11:43 PM

No. It's just treated as part of the price of a car.

Godzpeed 06-03-2012 02:28 AM

Its call the first registration tax. on more expensive cars, its close to 115%!!!

The best deal right now is to order a Tesla Model S, since the government allows EV cars to be completely tax free, and have a very low license fee annually. Also not to mention you never have to fill up again!

Buying a car is the first step, Owning the car is not easy in hk. There is also the annual license fee which is based on displacement and insurance. Anyone under 25 could never get insurance for these kind of cars. And on top of that, gas is like $17 per liter! Thats just some parts of it. If you live in the city, parking space cost at least $2-3000 a month for rent!!!

Yes, though I should point out for the sake of clarity that these figures are HK$ (where US$1=HK$7.8). Still not cheap though. That's why I was looking at a 2006/07 Elise which had only 5000km on it - it was nothing but a weekend car.
