1/2 mile

I'm just curious if anyone has run a 1/2 mile yet since I will be doing it this sunday. If so, what was your trap.

BadBRZ 06-21-2014 05:36 AM

Over 9000!!!

But for real... The 1/2 mile?!?

I didn't know people did this.

Is it a special event?

Search for Wanna go fast. They set up air strips around the mid west and atlantic. Also, TX2k is the "major" one where you see some wild high hp cars (2000+ horsepower Lamborghini, and 1500+hp GTR are common sights.)

It's basically "street trim" cars racing for top trap speeds at the 1/2. I'm guessing I'll hit near 160.

Lets us know... but if your NA doubt your hitting 160. You'll probably just be into 6th gear ~130.

He's closer to 500 whp than to N/A

AJPG 06-21-2014 10:57 PM

The first frs at 1/2 mile was like 1.5 to 2 years ago at aguadilla...
Was turbo and didn't break the 140.
A GTR with 700 whp could take you to 160 at the 1/2 mile, it's a 10 seconds car.

Draco-REX 06-21-2014 10:58 PM

Pay special attention to safety equipment requirements. Often these longer events will have strict rules due to higher speeds and expensive insurance. Mile events will often require a cage if you exceed 135mph.

Funny story: A local guy here has a Bentley Flying Spur that's been tuned. He took it to a Mile event and was clocked through the speed trap at 178mph... With his BRAKES on! He was immediately kicked out and banned from competing with that car ever again.

N/A? Maybe 160 kph :bellyroll:

Hawaiian 06-22-2014 12:14 AM

No cage needed here. The rules are fairly lax.

Do you know how to read? The guy above you already said he has 500whp, obviously not NA.

One of these things is not like the others.

So, it looks like the weak point might be the fuel pump. I would start to go lean and lose boost in 5th gear and only fifth gear. I'm already running a dw, but it wasn't enough. I will be doing it again in October with the new fueling solution.

FBM Walbro 485 kit will cure it all...

A 485 is next on the list. It will be in the car as well as a new transmission and oil cooler by October (when the next one comes along).

Today was no doubt a scorcher on the tarmac. I was having some higher AIT, as well as the oil hitting 230+ on runs that was probably a partial cause, but possibly the main reason was that the current pump was just running out of fuel when I was hitting 5th. There were no issues from first through 4th on any runs, and when I highway pull in 5th it's fine as well.

A surge tank would also be a possibility for the future.

Run by a local guy down here in Destin, FL named Blake. Very cool dude, and he brought our local photograhpher Joe Alonzo up there with him. Started with a 1/2 mile event just East of Panama City and now he runs them in multiple areas including Chicago and the ATL. I hadn't heard they actually give trap times now. That was my recommendation to him from the start. Don't make it a street racing thing, make it a professional thing with proper timing. Still not as cool as a mile, but it lets the higher horsepower cars show their stuff a little more than a 1/4 mile.

So what did you trap?

draggin_az 06-23-2014 12:02 PM

^^^yeah that

Hawaiian 06-23-2014 04:36 PM

I ran consistantly 130-133. All the speed I had picked up durring the day were all on the front end due to beter launches and shifts, but by the time I was hitting 5th the car wasn't making boost (3-4 psi tops), and was leaning out.

sluflyer06 06-23-2014 05:00 PM

Running out of fuel...forced induction...5th gear...built bottom end I hope?

High speed runs on these cars just seems kinda silly, the gearing is wrong and most people aren't making that much power. Stuff like that was more fun in my bmw that would hit early 170mph range with just exhaust work and tuning, it wasn't nearly as fun to drive as the twins though.

Why do things? Because we can. I will have better gearing and more fueling the next time I run. unfortunately I'm sitting here in a dead car because the battery was low from yesterday's driving. I stopped at a valet place for work, and they left my car with its hazards on for 3 hours. The valet guy went to jump me with a jumper pack, hook it up backwards, and blew my main fuse.

no I'm making calls to the owner of the valet company and local dealerships to find a new one.

Valet, not even once.
