Dustin's UltraMarine FR-S (Engine Blew - LS3 Time)
Finally got my FR-S after many years of drooling over them. I was originally looking at a BRZ limited or 2015 WRX. The Limited at the local Subaru dealer was discounted a lot in the exact colour I want and everything. I couldn't get any sales person to talk to me, so I left and went to the Scion dealership. I was originally looking at the new ones until I found a Used Ultramarine with only 3500 miles. Talked some number and picked her up the next day.
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....1f&oe=591E8D75 They look good together. Home to meet the others: https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....81&oe=594F8C6B I Very soon Painted the stock wheels Bronze and debadged the trunk. Brackets haven't shipped yet, Not sure when They will get here. The Rotors should be here thursday or friday. Seats will be ordered tomorrow. Excited for that. Almost had a set of Bride Zeta from a local craigslist ad, though he sold them right before I emailed him. |
Still waiting on my caliper brackets and seats. My girlfriend ordered a set of (knockoff) Bride Exas III because I missed out on a set of real Brides on craiglist. Will be ordering the brackets on monday. Though I did get some work done. I got the spacers on. Which I remember somewhere 18mm spacer in the rear and 25mm in the front to make the wheels flush. I must have remembered wrong, because the front has poke and the rear is still sunk in a tiny bit. I need to switch them around. While I was fitting the front I checked the size of the STI Rotors:

Im eager to see how your build turns out, you have quite the list there
|
Dman cant wait to see the finished result

So This happened:
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0...79&oe=58D94DA0 Painted all the Silver trim pieces black. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/A-...Q=w762-h571-no Fit the caliper to the rotors. I thought they would fit better(Use more of the rotor) so this may just be a temporary solution till I can find STI Brembos/bigger caliper. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/EU...g=w429-h571-no Still waiting on the other Bucket Seats to get here. They were suppose to ship out early last week and they haven't yet. I haven't been able to get in contact with the seller either. Going to cancel the order if they don't ship out by wednesday. |
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....63&oe=58E130C0
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....7d&oe=58D6991E This kit was a pain to install. They ended up sending me the wrong adapters. The only difference was a couple millimeters of space. These adapters made the caliper touch the rotor. It took almost 9 hours to get everything right, as I was using a dremel tool trying to take off the least amount of material from the caliper as possible. I eventually got it, but I was extremely frustrated and my back was(still is) killing me. They called me as soon as I emailed them telling them what happened. They offered to send the correct kit with the blue lines I wanted originally and everything. Not needed since I got it working anyway. I have nothing but good things to say about the company, but oh well. Putting an order in right now for Sustina Oil and OEM filter. Trying to think of anything elsei should order right now. Temp. Seats should have been here today, but USPS didn't even check if anyone was home and left with them. So I am hoping I can pick them up tonight. If not, I have to wait till Saturday. Got the temporary ebay seats: https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....01&oe=591065C1 They didn't really fit in the car: https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....7c&oe=58E30061 I had to unpack the seats and set them in the back. Took longer to get the box in than the seats. |

Nice ultramarine, this is the color I am looking for now with under 10K on the clock. Hopefully something pops up on carmax soon. :w00t: |

UEL because Rumble. I'm in the same boat of ordering the headers from Tomei, except if I do, it's definitely going to be UEL! Only hindrance for me is that there is lack of third party reviews on the Tomei UEL's as of right now. :/ Be the first to buy and review one! :D |
Everything I read/hear points to EL if going FI, and UEL if staying N/A as the power difference is minimal at best at such low power. So UEL it is. Should be ordering next week!
edit: Just ordered the rest of the Stuff to finish the headlights. I'll be stealing the ballasts from one of my other cars(Black car with all the Fogs on first post). Trying to decide between flat/matte black housing and duplicolors back chrome kit. |
Wow I already love this. Subbed

those headers...drool. Nice build!

Thanks Guys!!

I am loving the seat so far. Also just placed my order for my first oil change products. Going with Eneos Sustina oil, Factory Subaru filter, and Fumoto quick valve. |

I can't seem to get them to go in any further. Next up is the turn signals and the tail lights. |
man Tomei makes such quality products, I'd be happy with either of those headers, too bad they don't make a Turbo Mani, like the build so far!

Bwahhh... BRIDE + TOMEI

I ordered the Nameless 5" muffled Track Pipe yesterday. I am hoping that won't take long to ship out. I also plan on ordering the header and mid pipe in the next couple weeks. I have a track day in september I am wanting to go too. The header and tires(still deciding if I want to try and change tires) should net me some good gains. Right now the brakes are WAY over powering the stock tires haha.
I had heard that the crash beams could be removed with no ill-effect to the structural rigidity of the car. They also weight about 20lbs each. So I took the front one off last night and went for a spirited drive this morning. I didn't notice any difference, although I am on stock suspension and tires. I am going to wait a bit and then re-install it to see if I feel any difference. I was also able to get the bumper to fit right  |
|
Great build man! And from the pictures above you seem to be using your 86 quite nicely :p
Grtz |

Love how these cars look. I ordered the LED's to swap the HVAC and Gauge cluster to blue(White needles and Numbers). I will also try to swap all the other red LED's to blue as well. I need to dig into the stock radio to see if I can change them from amber to blue. Edit: Ordered some translucent blue vinyl to make the "tick marks" blue as well. A horribly late after thought came over me and I made another order for LED's, this time 0805 Bright Red(Hyper Red according the product sheet) SMD LEDs. My plan is to wire two of them to the stock shift light. When the shift light goes off, it lights the RPM needle red. Very much hoping it works out. |

Ever sense the RallyX I have needed to clean My engine bay, though I haven't been able to due to the retrofit leaving a giant hole in my headlight. So I ran to lowes and picked up 1 1/4 pipe end:
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....8b&oe=590FA5E6 Swapping over the LEDs I had to take the door panels off, and I just left them off for now. It's amazing how much of a sound insulator they are. https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....fc&oe=59140208 Ebay LED vs Mouser: https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....53&oe=58FF0FBE https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Jr...w=w429-h571-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/VW...g=w429-h571-no I have since painted the bottom a flat white to disperse the light better https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....fc&oe=59497B01(cold start, thats why rpms are high) |
How is the dash with night vision? The photo makes it appear very bright. It definitely looks cool. I am also curious about the huge wheels on your list, planning on FI?
|
Quote:
Maybe in the future I will, but the wheels were selected because they gave me the biggest possible contact patch at only 1 pound more per corner vs stock. Which is a lot less than a lot of people are running for a lot less tire. I am still debating on if I am actually going to run them though. I am thinking about switching to 17x8 or 18x8 with a 225. Not sure yet. this build log will get changed quite frequently. I have already switched a lot of the parts, and added a bunch of parts. Update: Still waiting on my Nameless Track Pipe to be made. Sucks as they pushed lead time from 2 weeks to 6 weeks due to all the orders they have received lately. |
Gutted the cat in the header, and replaced the mid pipe cat(wasn't planning on it, but the guy said why not. it was already all apart, might as well)

Just stock painted semi-gloss black. The highbeam reflectors are Duplicolor Shadow.
As soon as I shell out the ridiculous money for Switchback turn signals, I will paint the turn signals in the Shadow(albeit a lighter coat than the high beam) so that It doesn't look so odd with bright chrome turn signals in the front of a dark front end. Edit: Just ordered my TRD Quickshifter! was going to order the Kartboy, but it seems the TRD is shorter and doesn't have any annoying noises. Can't complain @ ~$110 less than the Kartboy as well. Looking at Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature Gauges as well as an oil change to 10w-30 Motul engine oil to help with the pressure loss at high RPM during heavy spirited/track sessions. I am looking at the Prosport Premium Evo(blue matches stock cluster), and Speedhut gauges matched to cluster. |

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....62&oe=591133A8 Custom tool made to get the shift spring out :sigh: Love the feeling of the short shifter along with the springs, shifter bushing, and clutch spring removal. The shifts are now short and tight, although a bit tough. I imagine it will get easier as I get used to it and everything wears in a bit. |

great build man but i would never put my car in that much dirt
|
Thanks! You have to remember it is just a car, and I ultimately bought it to have fun. I am not going to limit myself to certain types of fun just because the car may get dirty. All she needs is a bath and she is ready for the next adventure.
With that being said, I will not be using the FR-S on that "track" again. It looked nice, but was super rough. Build is moving slowly as I can't decide what to purchase/what to save for. I did recently pick up an RX-7 that needs a new engine. So I am also on the look for a 13b. Which is surprisingly hard in my area. |
Those blue needles are fantastic. How many coats did you put on the headlights?
|
Looks like your enjoying the new ride! Keep us updated!

I finally ordered a set of STI Brembos. Found a place to get rebuilt calipers for much less than used sets on ebay. They should shipping out next week. Finally spent real money on some aesthetic parts(besides LEDs, and paint). HIC Roof Spoiler, and a TRD style spoiler. This one seems to be a bit longer and at more of an angles. Should look good. Looking for a color to paint the Calipers. Choosing from PrismaticPowders Edit: Got notification that the calipers went on backorder again -_- Second time this has happened. Just means I need to find something else to apply that money too. Got the refund, just waiting for it to hit my account, |
If All goes according to plan. Either tonight or tomorrow morning, I shall have a driveway labs rear diffuser ordered(or front splitter and some bushings)
Plasti-dip on the stock wheels is peeling off, So Wednesday(weather permitting) I will re-platidip them. Thinking about going white this time. Edit: After thinking it over, and discussing with friends, I didn't end up ordering the diffuser yet. I am going to order the front splitter and diffuser together near the end of winter/beginning of spring. I ended up ordering Eibach Pro-Kit, Front camber bolts, Rear Diff bushings, and the new Tail-as-turn module from DiodeDynamics(I cut the stock reverse lights off, and it really sucks not having them). I am excited for the new look. My roof spoiler should be here tomorrow, and will be getting painted saturday morning. I am also taking my ill-fitting spoiler to get fit and painted as well. https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....de&oe=59156FD8 https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....e5&oe=59148499 https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31....da&oe=5913D69C (Car is filthy I know) |

I ran out of time to paint the wheels(Barely got them stripped) and install the rear Diff bushings. I am hoping I will get time tomorrow. Going to get an alignment tomorrow. Saturday I am going on a spirited drive with some friends. I will be chasing a modified turbo mr2(aw11), and a modified Miata. Both running Falken Azenis RT-615K and driven by some of the best drivers I know. I am interested to see how it goes. I expect to left in the dust, though I will do my best. |
