Reaper's turbo build

So ive built a few toyotas in my day. My favorites are toyota pickups. Everything from v8 swapped solid axle 4 runners to my absolutely intoxicating turbo stroked long travel hilux. Ive dabbled in a few friends supra builds and owned a first gen mr2 for a little while and a few others even a scion tc. Then I joined the military and moved a lot. So cars and trucks went out the window.
I started building atvs and motorcycles in my somehow always second story apartment in various places with a sears toolkit while all my shop equipment sat at my mothers house thousands of miles away. I ended up with a very fast suzuki bking, a ducati and a absolutely monstrous 100hp can am atv. Attachment 82275Attachment 82276Then I moved once more and was told I would be there a minimum of 3 years! That an eternity! I bought a house and a trailer and moved my toolbox and gear down from my mothers house.

Time for a car or truck again. Something fun. I searched for supras but they were way too much money and a 2jz build has its drawbacks. Maybe a v8 truck again? Nah. Got it. V8 miata. I sourced an lq9 a iron ls chevy motor and started looking for a miata but as I started planning the build and adding up the costs fullblown had put up a post about making 600whp on a stock motor. Hmmm....I do miss having a toyota again. What ever happened to the ft86?...

My 4 year old monster of an atv had only 72 hours on it and so did the one i built for my wife. both starting to collect dust. I sold them and bought an asphalt frs. One month later I ordered a fullblown turbo.Attachment 82277Attachment 82278Attachment 82279Attachment 82280

First thing I did was swap the clutch out for an act streetlite and a 6 puck sprung.Attachment 82281 Then i started dding the car as weather was getting bad and my wife likes my truck. When the turbo showed up I installed half of it. Lol. Literally. The fuel pump, intercooler and all piping were installed and the coolant and oil line where run but capped off. I drove the car all week like the that.

The goal was torque. I chose a gtx2867r a perrin overpipe and a fullblown dual 3 inch exhaust. I went with 550 injectors because I dont have e85 near me. Then we made thisAttachment 82284 Attachment 82287 so this happened Attachment 82286 I started storing 55 gallon drums of e85 at my house and ordered bigger injectors anf a walbro 485

I had a weird high rpm lean condition. Thankfully I was smart enough to wire a wideband o2 into the factory ecm and my tuner made me a great custom map with a failsafe that saved my motor. I had a large change in e content and was pushing my fuel system a little hard.

The 1000s and the walbro 485 are in! My buddy just grenaded an ej25 over 400whp because the factory wiring died while using a 485 so mine was hardwired. Car made good power and seemed to be stable and reliable now. Then another lean condition. Wtf! Now an idle issue and a dtc. Now its running hot. Holy crap.

Hardwiring caused a po230 code(fuel pump voltage)
Idle issues were because a walbro 485 hardwired is too much for the factory regulator to handle with rail pressures over 70psi. Both base fullblown fans died on the dyno. The no longer sell the kit with these fans.
I got it home and removed the upper radiator mounts and trimmed the factory shroud violently until it fit. Somehow.

Car drove pretty well and made a lot of torque spooling nicely. But still had some teething problems. Mainly the fuelpump and po230 code. With a check engine light on you lose your cruise control by the way.

I called lj at fulblown and walbro. Turns out when I initially checked my pump voltage it was at 8.6 which I thought was from resistance. Turns out the pump is voltage controlled by the ecm. I ripped out the hardwired relay and the dtc is gone and the car runs buttery smooth after a tune adjustment.

Very nice build!

Are you comfortable storing the e85 outside like that?

Looks good.

dabocx 06-17-2014 01:44 PM

So 485 is mandatory for that much? Guess my 255 isn't going to cut it :/

Sweet build!

Yeah they are. He is scared of the power. Don't worry, Jurrian wouldn't be.

Reaper 06-17-2014 03:33 PM

I'm pretty happy with the torque. Less of it would actually make me faster. I have traction issues.

Just cell phone crap which looks awful when uploaded. Ill try and get something better this weekend. A few guys were asking for exhaust sounds too so I owe them.

Massive @MAPerformance oil pan. To run the oil pan with a fullblown kit you will need a 45* 3/8th npt to -10 fitting, a straight -10 and a 45*-10 with about 10 inches of braided line. Attachment 82407 Attachment 82406[IMG][IMG][/IMG][/IMG] coated and wrapped
Attachment 82408 eibach springs to hold me over.

Aftermarket fluid reservoirs? I hate how big mine are and how much that V twin makes them vibrate.

Reaper 06-18-2014 02:31 PM

Stock diavel ones. Leaked and warrantied twice.

Had inconsistent vacuum running so many T fittings that resulted in some BOV flutter at part throttle boost. I knew from the start I needed to clean up my vacuum situation but with no time off and chasing fuel system issues it wasn't priority.

I was going to drill and tap the coolant distribution blocks FullBlown send with their kit since I don't use them but I couldn't get barb to NPT fitting locally.

Then I got vacation time! So I overnighted parts from japan. (that's what I say when I take the ducati 2 hours to summit racing) I picked up a vibrant vaccum manifold, some 1/2 inch hose, some 1/4 inch hose, 1/2 and 1/4 inch barb to 3/8 and 1/8 npt fittings. Ran a 1/2 in hose form the vacuum port on the top of the manifold and put the vacuum distro block on the passenger side strut brace. Mounted the FullBlown MBC to the front of the alternator cover with some zipties. No longer is my BOV t'd into my MBC vacuum source.:bonk:

Problem solved. Problem staying solved.

Though I would like to try a lighter BOV spring at some point. Im currently running the brown spring which should be the stiffest spring they make.

King Tut 06-25-2014 02:30 PM

Looks good. Not as pretty as my setup, but well done. Must be nice being able to ride your Ducati to Summit and pick up parts.

Reaper 06-25-2014 02:43 PM

It was still 2 hours each way! And about 30 minutes of it was in shitty rain.
Whenever I blast out a mass text of "about to overnight parts from japan" everyone starts asking me to pick things up so I can usually get comped for the fuel.

I can normally order my parts from Summit or Jegs and have them in 2 days, but nothing like being able to get parts the same day. I am kind of surprised they actually have a storefront.

Reaper 06-25-2014 02:50 PM

Its a warehouse with a small parts counter and a few engines/tires/shirts/detail stuff on display. It has a storefront footprint the size of a big gas station.

J_kennington 06-25-2014 03:43 PM

Not gonna lie...I love going to summit...but I always end up broke. Last time I went, was pretty close to the same reason as you. Needed new fittings and vacuum lines for the eclipse, ended up leaving with those....and a 75 shot zex wet kit. Ended up selling the zex kit and upgrading turbos instead. I need to go and get a new intercooler...but I'm scared to go lol.

Car looks good though, and that Ducati is pure sexy

Is it just me or is everyone going FI?!

brown spring in the bov didn't work. I ground down the coils (cutting is not how you decrease spring rate, making the wire smaller is) until it leaked at idle then shimmed it back. Worked under load in boost but not the right answer. Didn't work revving in neutral and about half the time at partial boost.

Ordered a yellow and a plain spring.

Plain spring leaked at idle bad. Almost completely open. A small animal could have been sucked in there. If I had a vented hood and drove it like that I would be worried.

Yellow closed at idle and bov works just sitting in neutral and revving the crap out of it. Partial boost, full boost, launch control engine braking.....problem solved.

Anyone need a plain BOV spring?

@FullBlown looks like my car likes the yellow spring. 19inhg at idle

Can I say I told you bro? I also ended up with a yellow (-11 psi) spring with a couple washers as the best setup for my Full Blown kit. I found that while the yellow 11 psi spring kept it closed just fine at idle it was still opening up just a little in off throttle engine braking instances, so I added a couple washers to fix that. By the way here is the link for people that don't understand what we are talking about:

http://www.tialsport.com/documents/w3_tial_qqr_sp.pdf

Color PSI (Vacuum)
Brown -12 PSI (-21 to -23 in/hg)
Yellow -11 PSI (-20 to -21 in/hg)
Plain -10 PSI (-16 to -19 in/hg)

Reaper 07-02-2014 11:32 AM

I remember reading your review on the fbm kit back in the day and thinking maybe I should order some more bov springs? Nah local shops should stock a handful of them no biggy its just springs right? WRONG. No one stocks bov springs. Most people dont bother getting their bov setup right.
