dealership 4 hours away, bad for engine break in?

Hi to all! First post, long time lurker. I'm looking to preorder a BRZ from a dealership 4 hours away. Would it be bad to drive it home for 4 hours at freeway speeds off the bat? How's the break in on this engine?

Your biggest concern would be not varying your rpm diving at highway speeds. If you don't mind keeping the rpm low and varying your revs enough while driving it shouldn't do a ton of damage.

Vary your road speed and engine speed by shifting between 4,5,6 every so often, and you'll be find. Don't use your cruise control. Everything will be alright.

Or take the roads less traveled (back roads)

I second this. You may turn a four hour trip into a six hour trip, but it will be very much worth it. The backroads will give you ample opportunities to break your car in the right way, it won't be annoying like break-in driving on the highway, and you'll learn the characteristics of the car in its natural environment. Win-win-win, IMO.

This. And who knows, you might even have a chance to see some nice sights too. Perfect for backdrops of your new BRZ! :D

I'm three hours away and plan to make it four hours back with many "back" roads.

Subie 05-23-2012 10:57 AM

I'm in a similar situation; if my car comes at the end of June or later, I'll have to drive 4 hours to pick-up my car, too. My plan is to travel on US1 instead of I-95 so I can vary the drive a bit.

Mykflo 05-23-2012 11:15 AM

nice answer. I'll have to look at the map before i head out, altho i'm planning on the limited so i'll have the navi!!!! i was even considering towing it back, but i know i'll end up driving it off the lot. i should find out later today if its going to happen. waiting on them to appraise my trade in. i wish i lived in a place where i had nice curby roads, but around here, everythings pretty much a straight shot, all desert.

FYI: The Premium has navigation as well.

Shit.. and here I am going to drive 8 hours when I pick up my BRZ.

(new job offer in Charleston, preorder is in Tampa (unless I can find just as good dealer in charleston))

I'm driving 1,000 miles in the first few days of having mine

motorcycleroads.com/.us have some decent routes :)

nevermind

I've got a long drive ahead of me as well when I pick mine up.
So just to clarify - we're not supposed to keep it at the same rev for a long period of time and the manual states we're not supposed to exceed 4k RPMs.

So if I'm on the highway - I'll set my timer to go off every 10-15 mins to change gears/speed/RPMs to vary from 2k-4k RPM? That sound about right?

Driving 12+ hours for mine. Picking up in Puyallup, WA, and driving home to San Francisco. 2 states and 800 miles, just for a car! Aww yeah. :burnrubber:

When I buy a new vehicle and I have to sustain any highway driving while in the break-in period I vary engine speed and/or gears at an even greater frequency. I change every five minutes or so, taking care not to exceed the manufacturer recommended RPM limit - unless an emergency situation dictates otherwise.

Jayde 05-23-2012 02:57 PM

The dealer I'm buying mine from is probably 30mins from my house, but when I pick up the car, I'll take the really long way home. :)

kwood9000 05-23-2012 03:06 PM

My dealer is about 10 minutes away. Since I work from home I'll need to take some long weekend trips to get to 1,000 miles.

MmmHamSandwich 05-23-2012 03:40 PM

Granted plotting a back road route for a trip that otherwise takes 4 hours isn't easy but doable. Try making a route with google maps drag and reroute feature.

Your only other option would be to have it trailered.

Agreed. Thinking that a few vacation days will be in order.

Dave-ROR 05-23-2012 03:51 PM

I plan on putting ~4000 miles on the car before the end of June (but depending on family plans my drive to Gettysburg might get cancelled). August will see a drive to Ohio, September maybe Colorado.

They are meant to be driven after all :)

I once drove from cleveland, oh to myrtle beach, sc using only back roads. This was before google maps and gps. Plotted it out on a atlas and arrived 24 hours later lol

Wait, before Google maps and GPS? Did they have the interstate system back then!? ;)

Pretty solid work there.

Yes they are. Part of the reason I am getting rid on my 10 month old Legacy is that I have put 5k miles on it. I just don't enjoy driving it that much and it sits there.
