Pipe dreams and poor life choices

I figure I might as well start a thread of my own so I'm not posting weird stuff in other topics as much. I used to be into Cressidas, but I wanted something newer / more sporting to build up so after some searching I found a burned out BRZ for sale about 30 miles away from me.

pic from the auction site, went off this and bought it site unseen

omg

yes

Good luck!

ZionsWrath 06-06-2014 06:59 PM

This will decimate all, after you put about fifteen grand in it or more. If you have to, overnight parts from Japan.

WOW! That looks like it really is!

The OP has one of the most famous twins out there....

SomeoneWhoIsntMe 06-06-2014 07:33 PM

Oh yeah, it's definitely the Visconti car. I pulled the vortech off and sold it already, and I'm pumped that it came with stainless vband exhaust, I'm only going to need to have like a foot of pipe fabbed up to make my downpipe meet up with the Perrin exhaust.

wheelhaus 06-06-2014 08:21 PM

This will be interesting... Kudos for taking on such a project!

tahdizzle 06-06-2014 08:37 PM

Good luck.

janitor 06-06-2014 08:46 PM

Well then.

Looking forward to seeing the progress on this.

Ben_G 06-06-2014 08:48 PM

noob question, but wouldn't the fire have cause the frame to weaken?

FRS_FIEND 06-06-2014 08:49 PM

I LOVE THE ENGINE SWAP PLAN!! cant wait to see this thing Completed! GOOD luck on that build!:burnrubber:

suaveflooder 06-06-2014 09:33 PM

In. This is going to expensive

LadyFRZ 06-06-2014 10:16 PM

Woah.
Incredibly brave to do something like this.
Can't wait to see what happens.

I'm in the tool and die business, and I've asked colleagues that took metallurgy classes in college as well as friends I know in mechanical engineering right now, and all I've been able to get out of people has been a definite "maybe".

Basically it totally depends on how hot the fire got (which there's an upper limit on, E85 flame only gets so hot), how long it stayed there, how fast the fire was quenched, the composition of the steel, etc. Mild steel that car frames are made out of doesn't really harden as much as a higher alloy steel would have.

Also, if I stitch weld the front end, it should relieve most of the internal stresses that the fire may or may not have induced.

edit: I have no idea what this diagram means.

Holy reverse necroviscontuning!

Rayme 06-06-2014 11:25 PM

You got the thread title right.

Serious question, what is your estimate to bring her up to standard again? I can only imagine the time spent on each and every single component that is damaged in the bay (there is virtually NOTHING good on the front half of the car), ugh.. good luck.

Shim 06-06-2014 11:29 PM

I showed this to my local metallurgist who specializes in steel heat treat. She says its probably almost good as new, just bend/weld it back into shape and you'll be fine.

Pistol 06-06-2014 11:42 PM

, good luck buddy

mact 06-07-2014 12:01 AM

Saw this on copart. Glad to see something awesome is going to happen with it.

Back to standard? Probably over $30k. The wiring harness, dash, most of the interior, all the computers, and obviously anything in the bay is trashed.

Fortunately, I'm not looking to bring it up to standard. If Scion would have sold me a bare shell I would have gone with that, but they won't so this is the next best thing.

mitosis 06-07-2014 07:28 AM

Wow, this is awesome!

I'm super excited to see a project like this done with a twin... especially THAT twin in particular! It would be cool if you got a custom plate that said "phoenix" or something like that, lol.

My brother-in-law is super jealous of my FR-S and there's no way he could afford one anytime soon, so I've fantasized about getting my hands on a wrecked twin for cheap that we could patch up in some sketchy less-than-safe manner so we can rally it until the wheels fall off or something.

Thanks for taking on such a project and sharing it with us, I hope it all goes good.

Sarlacc 06-07-2014 07:44 AM

What's that engine you're planning to put in?

Good luck with the project!

SomeoneWhoIsntMe 06-07-2014 08:07 AM

Engine is a 1JZ-GTE VVTi out of a JZX100 chaser/markii/cresta. I'm going to use a pontiac solstice 5-speed with it because it's an aisin trans similar to the one that's supposed to go on 1jz's only cheaper and newer. I have an ace-up motorsports downpipe, that's probably going to be the only power mod along with deleting the stock bov and replacing it with an aftermarket one and adding a boost controller. Not sure what I'm going to do about EMS yet, I'd like to go AEM or megasquirt down the road, but the stock ECU is also perfectly capable of running the engine for now.

Once I go with standalone EMS or a decent piggyback, I'd like to get cams and a bigger stock location turbo. Unless I know for sure that won't satisfy me by then, I've got a 2jz-ge block I can rebuild to go 1.5jz.

SomeoneWhoIsntMe 06-07-2014 09:50 AM

mx63? weird. I hate 7m's with a passion, but x6's are cool.

if it's an '80 it's solid rear end, right? get a ford 8.8" under her with a spool if you ever break the stock axle

Oooh, that's nice! I've always had a soft spot for Toyotas inline-six engines.

You probably could have found one that had been in a flood.

I'm actually curious if this will be as expensive as people are saying. I'm sure it's not cheap. But you have people buying stock cars new and dumping serious cash into them. If he got this cheap enough from the auction, I bet he might equal some higher end builds, but not likely he'll pass them up. Either way I'm curious to see how this goes.

Turbo95eg6 06-07-2014 10:42 PM

Always wondered, is the orange just some kind of rust? Or was the front clip hot lava or something?

SomeoneWhoIsntMe 06-08-2014 12:49 AM

It's just surface rust and impurities from all the bullshit that burned off in there. Media blasting should take care of it.

slicktop 06-08-2014 01:15 AM

I love it! I had a JZX100 in Japan and the motor sang everyday without skipping a beat. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Man im not a fan of them either! its his second one. My brother doesnt exactly have a lot of money though so i see why he likes them. He swapped it built it all on his own i think only his head he got port and polished by pros. Ive been telling him to go 1JZ since he started looking into swaps lol But in the end i Think he was only want 300rwhp so the 7m can handle that. Idk if he wants even more.
it is an '80 The pale yellow beige looking color, the original paint too lots of oldschool guys love it lol Im not the expert on those bad boys I THINK I remember him saying its a solid axle ill ask him lol. Hes in Love with that car! Ill try to get some Pics from him.

yeah im sure hell uprgade the axle at some point lol. Right now hes running straight downpipe its loud af and thats not good in cali lol, hes in the process of making a custom exhaust 2.75"
