attached is a recent review and comparison between the porsche cayman with very positive results and comments toward the 86.

interestingly, this is the first review i have read/watched which suggests the shift feel in the 86 is 'better' than the miata.

enjoy :)

Symbiont 05-21-2012 09:38 PM

A bit hard to read, as the resolution isn't holding up to when I zoom in. Could be the iPad, but I haven't had issues before.

dude04 05-21-2012 09:47 PM

i had a nice PDF but the site gives me an error when i try to upload the pdf :(

Symbiont 05-21-2012 10:13 PM

I stand corrected, looking at it on my computer monitor is much more readable. Thanks again!

After reading this review about the Porsche Cayman and the FR-S I am really excited about taking delivery of my FR-S. I was thinking about purchasing a used Porsche Cayman until I read an article about the FR-S in Autoweek a few months ago. I have read many reviews on the FR-S and every driver said the FR-S is "FUN" to drive. Can't wait!

StuttterButtter 05-22-2012 12:59 AM

Great read man thx a lot for posting this.

adamls2 05-22-2012 04:53 AM

Really nice article!!! I'll take the 86 please :D

Ack... My S2000 just inched closer to a classified ad...

Lonewolf 05-22-2012 12:08 PM

The things I would do for a new Cayman S...

The FRS is just far more manageable in terms of the hit on finances though...I see the FRS as good practice for the Cayman S...

Interesting article but using their criteria I bet the 86 would murder the LFA.

ChadSexington 05-22-2012 06:48 PM

Were I a new Cayman owner, I would be crushed.

I was comparing the S2000, RX-8, and MX-5 Miata to the FR-S in my mind yesterday and I came to this conclusion: The S2000 is more high strung and almost race-car like. The FR-S is more relaxed and traditional sports car like. It doesn't have as much grip as the S2000 but that's what makes it fun. So in a way, you would be stepping down in performance but stepping up in fun.

Yeah, but fast cars are often not fun cars. Sure, you are impressed by the speed and grip but on the streets, that can only go so far.

That reminds me of the 458 Italia review by Jeremy Clarkson when he's like, "If I had just bought a Ferrari F430, I would probably want to commit suicide right now."

I would agree with you about the S being almost like a 'race car for the street' type vehicle. It's loud and uncomfortable when you're just putting along, but there are few vehicles as engaging and few vehicles whose engines make me smile as much as the S2000. I find myself rev matching everywhere I go just so I (and everyone else, seeing as I have a loud exhaust) can just hear the F20 unwind down the rev range. :D

And yeah, you're right about not all 'fast' cars being that much fun. My car before my S was a 480 rwhp 300ZX Twin Turbo... Really awesome car, went like stink on the highway, and was always impressive to passengers, but it wasn't exactly the most fun car to drive. Sure, a quick highway blast is definitely entertaining, but dip that thing into a corner at a decent pace, and it felt more uncomfortable than running out of toilet paper in a public stall.

That being said, I got very close to working out a deal today on an FR-S and trading in my S, even though I know I'd get more selling it on my own. Luckily (and unluckily) for me, the vehicle that the dealer initially thought was available turned out to be pre sold. I think as long as the car is 90% as engaging and entertaining as the S2000 (which, from early reviews, it seems like it will be), it will be a good purchase seeing as it will be about 200% more comfortable and practical as a DD. :D

Yeah, the sound of the S2000 engine is the best of all 4 cylinder car engines IMO. But as a daily driver, the FR-S is that much more practical and fuel efficient and comfortable while, as you say, about 90% as engaging. But I think it will be even more entertaining because of the more progressive balance and lower limits.

BTW, did you get to sit in the FR-S? If so, what were your impressions in comparison?

haha that was to piss off James May, because he had just bought a 430.

I like how they said the BRZ was made firmer in the front to make it feel like a WRX, lol... sometimes I wonder what in the world is subaru thinking haha.

luxmn 05-22-2012 10:13 PM

center of gravity 0.71in (18mm) lower than the Cayman, oh yeah, the race for horse power is over :D

From what I've read about the LFA, probably not. The same qualities that make the 86 stand out among it's peers is are the same as what makes the LFA stand out in it's rarified air. I guess you could go far out on a limb and say the 86 is the layman's LFA, less the glorious orgasm inducing sound and 352hp for a $350k discount?

Man if only Yamaha did the engine\exhaust sounding on the 86\FR-S\BRZ like they did on the LFA.....

S2000 still sounds better at 9K rpm, better than any other 4 cylinder engine...LFA has the best sounding of all engines...

DeepHunta 05-23-2012 12:52 AM

Holy crap! best best read ever. The world is over if Subaru's can out perform a Porsche. The world needs to know this!

And speaking of Top Gear, the Cayman R was out beat by the BMW 1M. All of Porsche's cars are getting worse except the 911 of course.

I agree. LFA is the best followed closely by the Porsche Carrera GT. They sound like a freakin Formula 1 car!

I have sat in the FRS. It's obviously very much more comfortable. With the door closed, I have more hip and leg room (I'm not a huge guy. 5'8" 180 lbs--and dropping) than in the S2000. The seats in the FR-S are way more comfortable, and may even be more supportive (not sure without actually driving it).

The shifter in the FR-S feels crisp, but it's still not on S2000 levels (best gearbox in the industry imho). Interior design, materials, and build quality is honestly a toss up. They're both very spartan, not particularly 'high class,' but both get the job done well.

Seating position and pedal position is basically a toss up as well. The FR-S does have a telescoping wheel, which helps, but both cars are very good. Visibility is better out of the FR-S. Pedal placement is perfect in both cars, though (again, without driving it, it's hard to say for sure), I'd venture a guess that the S2000 is marginally better.

Honestly, the sound alone makes this car worth it. It's like buying a musical instrument.

Yeah, when I first heard they did some sound tuning on the car, I thought it would be like the LFA so I got really excited to hear it. But it turned out to just be the stupid cabin air intake thing.

As fellow 86/BRZ enthusiast brothers... lets not talk about that.

This is by far a ballsy and very impressive review. This car is definitely a game changer in today's car industry on so many levels. One cant help but think of the competition to come, and what other big names plan on doing to challenge such inspiring legacy.

On further note, im surprised no one has taken the time to mention the NSX comparison. Yeah the miata mention is obvious, and to put it against the porsche is pretty astounding. To compare it to one of the greatest performers to ever hit the racing 90's industry tells you something. Toyota is back, and it wants to bring back that competition it had once inspired almost 20 years ago. That alone helps me completely justify my purchase with not only one of the greatest compact cars ever built, but one that's built in my own generation. :party0030::happy0180::burnrubber:
