Clicking / Ticking Rear Noise
Anyone else have the issue where you start off in 1st gear and hear this clinking/ticking noise on the driver side rear?
Every time when I accelerate from 1st I hear this clicking or ticking noise from the driver side rear. I can some times hear it clicking or ticking when I shift to second or when I'm in second and slowing down from 3-4000rpm it also happens when I shift to third some times as well. Anyone know whats going on? I'm thinking about bringing in my car tomorrow to the dealership to take a look at it. Thanks everyone and sorry if this has been answered before. Also, I'm bone stock no mods to anything. |
Sound anything like the videos/links in this thread?

How did you guys end up fixing it? Torquing it down to 140lbs? |

This is clearly a common issue with our cars, I don't understand why there is no TSB for this.

I have a clicking sound as well, but not like the one in the video. It does not happen when I press the gas pedal. Mine sounds like something is rattling around the wheel.

Had a similar issue. Replaced axle nuts... no more clicking. The guys that helped me out noted that the swaybar endlink was a little loose, so they re-torqued that. Did track event over the weekend and a few days later the clicking came back, but much less severe.

BTW-my clicking never came back. |
Sorry to raise this from the grave but I have this same issue. Took it to the dealer twice but they did not hear anything so now it's on me to fix it. So any diy on how to do this? Do I need to jack up the car and take off the wheel? Any special tools? I have a fair bit of experience working on cars but only in the engine bay...

Try to record video of it. Call Toyota and see what they may recommend. If those fail, then yeah, take it upon yourself and good luck! |
Just going to go at it myself on Wednesday. Worst case take it to the dealer then.

Google is your friend, yes nut is easily accessible with wheel removed, retorquing may not solve it, but a new nut may help as the material is pretty soft and easily deformed.
You'll need a 32mm socket and a beefy breaker bar. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1194267 |
i have the same issue when i put my car in rear, usuually on a cold start. i always had this issue, but too lazy to bring it up to my dealer. guess next time i go in for service ill mention it.

I get this same noise driver side rear only when I go up and down my driveway (requires going at an angle too as my car is lowered, maybe 1.5-1.8"?). I can't reproduce it all the time, it happens randomly and I always try to listen for it when I go up and down the driveway. During straight leveled driving I can't hear it at all.
If I had the same issue as mentioned in this thread, would it be something that can be reproduced easily and on leveled surfaces? |
This problem must be solved Stat or can take sometime?

Here's my update on this. I originally took it to the dealer and they wouldn't touch my car as it had mods. I took it to a few more dealers and same thing. I replaced the axle nut myself and the click went away for a day. Later I read somewhere someone greasing all the internals of the ebrake assembly so I tried that, which lasted maybe about a year or so. The click came back last year so I tried lubing the ebrake up again but this time it didn't help. I'm stuck with the constant clicking noise when the wheel gains or looses torque in that area. It's pretty annoying. I try to drown it out with supercharger whine, music, and exhaust noise.
