Yes! 99.9% sure I'll be at this one!

f0rge 05-26-2014 12:29 PM

Definitely going to be at this one, so sad I missed the first.

automatic 05-26-2014 01:09 PM

I'll be there too..:burnrubber:

mabviper 05-26-2014 03:32 PM

I may end up coming to this one as well.

Skurj 05-26-2014 05:54 PM

Where is that rubber arm of mine...

Ok complete noob.. how do these events work? Anyone able to cover what the day consists of at one of these?... I've never even spectated..

engsr 05-26-2014 07:25 PM

You can get a basic gist of "what autoslalom is" by searching through google, but I'll try to explain how our events work since every group does it a bit differently.

We run all cars numerically from lowest to highest. Some cars are left out for marshalling (ie. picking up cones, watching the course) as it's a requirement. Once that run group is completed, we switch marshalls with another group of drivers, then start over again. Basically, if there are 6 run groups, one of those gets replaced for marshalling, so in total you get 5 timed runs.

At the beginning of the day, you get a chance to walk to the course, so you know where to go, as the course always changes from event to event. The course length will vary anywhere from 40 to 60 seconds. The idea is to try to get the best lap that you can with the amount of runs that are available. It's not like time attack where you get practice runs and then a set of runs to get your one best lap. Here, it's about learning the course as quickly as possible and setting a quick time within those 5 runs.

If you're completely green to all of this, I suggest you do come out and participate. You will learn more instead of just coming out to watch. For the most part, most of the people that are there are more than willing to help you out too, so don't be afraid to ask to someone to coach you during your runs. The one thing that irritates me, especially after saying it at the driver's meeting, is watching some complete noob attempt the course solo on their first run, and then not ask for help or even refuse it.

Not really sure if that's the answer you're looking for, so let me know if you have other questions.

nvortex 05-26-2014 08:47 PM

I signed up for this. Will be my first time so I'll need a lot of coaching.

mabviper 05-26-2014 09:32 PM

I'm a novice but if I don't have a passenger, you can come with me if you want.

One thing that got me the first time I went was how confusing the course can be. I went all out the first run and got lost. Took some more runs to get familiar with it but by that time, it's too late. Now a days, I go really slow the first run. 2nd run, I experiment with gearing then try all out in 3rd run. I also record the runs and review them after each run :D.

That's what has always bothered me with these events whenever I have seen them on youtube or when driving by.. it seems a forest of cones. But after talking to ppl at the DDT on the weekend, I get the impression that everyone starts out that way, and that we all get to be noobs at some point. I'll never know if I don't try it :bonk:

I'm available to help navigate the course with you while you're doing your runs. Just come up and ask me, I'll be driving the #48 Blue BRZ.

While you're not driving, I would recommend that you get as many ride alongs as you can. It will help you navigate the course on your next run. Most people will not have a problem but some people are more on the competitive side so dont get offended if they prefer to run without a passenger.

ToyoburuBRZ 05-27-2014 10:20 AM

I've been doing autocross for the last five years with a formula SAE car and absolutely love it. Now that I have a BRZ I want to continue but after seeing videos of this event, it makes me uncomfortable seeing how close the course is set up to poles and signs.

I think I will be doing the WOSCA autocross instead which is held at Centrilia airport on a wide open runway. Because of this the course is typically a lot faster and a lot safer I feel

How much does that event run? Sounds incredibly fun on an airfield

It is extremely fun! In a FSAE car with aero I was able to do slaloms at about 140km/h... They try to set up at least one slalom to be 120km/h in a road car.

They don't have pricing up as of yet but in the past it is usually no more than $40-$50.

Here is their website that has the list of events on it and it should be updated with a price soon

The courses are always designed with those things in mind. However, if you run out of talent, then there may be an issue. But that can happen at any kind of venue.

this is a large portion of the autoslalom competition experience,

Your cognitive abilities of reading and memorizing the course are as important as the driving part.

A clean completion of the course at a brisk pace is often enough to land anyone in the mid pack.

Pylon penalties are crippling and completing a run only to be told that you went off-course, without knowing where, sets you back at least another 2 runs before being able to attack at full speed.

This is how a typical day for an uninitiated novice goes.

Go like a bat out of hell from the start,

Totally forget that there is a corner coming up

brake super late and super hard

completely overshoot the entry

full lock the wheel

severely overheat the front tires while scrubbing off speed just to make the corner

then back on the throttle 100%, most likely oversteering in a RWD car and continuing to plow in a FWD hoping to pull out
now you’re flying towards the next corner with tires that are cooked and the process repeats over and over again

you cross the finish line having hit 2-3 cones and get told that you went off-course.. but they don’t tell you where exactly

you don’t get a timw

you finally stay on course on your 3rd time but you’re still hitting cones and you’re still blowing through turns because you think that’s fast

the day’s times are posted and you’re bottom of the barrel

you’re too proud and say fuck it and never show up again.

If this has/will be your first experience, then it’s time to relax a bit and be humble and start from the basics.

f0rge 05-27-2014 01:45 PM

This event is great for noobs, everyone is friendly and the whole thing is very low key.

You don't need to be competitive to have fun. Some veteran guys go 10/10ths every time but there's plenty of people just taking it easy and learning the course and the limits of their cars. Getting lost on course is a frequent occurrence even for some of us that have been doing this for years.

I'm never competitive in my class but I still have a blast each and every time.

brzr 05-27-2014 08:47 PM

i had lots of fun at the spda autocross.....might show up for this

wparsons 05-27-2014 09:27 PM

Track walk, track walk, track walk!

You NEED to walk the course before you try driving it, and put yourself in a similar vantage point to where you will be in the car (ie don't just walk around the course, walk the line you want to take in the car). Find any reference points you'll need, and try to at least remember the flow of the course.

When you're in the car, look ahead. If you're not looking far enough ahead, you'll constantly be playing catch up with yourself.

7thgear 05-27-2014 09:49 PM

one thing about picton tho... chances are there will be no track walk.. since we end up with like a 2km course and close to 100+ people

so they may simply do a congo line for everyone (plus you get a map)

drewbot 05-27-2014 10:30 PM

On my very first run on the SPDA clinic (day 1, end of day course) I got confused for 1 second on the straight

What I learned is that when doing the track walk, take into account the distances between cones does not really mean equal time between cones, since you are speeding through some sections. Seems self explanatory, but when you have all that adrenaline pumping, it's hard to account for everything.

@Skurj it's too bad you missed that clinic, as it was very fun and also informative. The slightest of tips from different drivers made all the difference from run #1 to run #12

It is also incredibly fun learning the limits of OE suspension and OE tires on cold surfaces with TRAC OFF

Skurj 05-28-2014 07:12 AM

Curious how many runs I might get at an event like this? I've heard with the big ones it may not be much?

engsr 05-28-2014 11:00 AM

Usually we do 5-6 timed runs. Depending how well the day goes, there's usually fun runs at the end of the day. Last event there was over an hour of fun runs, and some people went 3-4 more times from what I saw.

f0rge 05-28-2014 11:11 AM

My windshield just got a nasty crack in it (stupid low car), will they let me run with the crack or will I have to get a new windshield beforehand?

engsr 05-28-2014 11:17 AM

It won't be an issue from our standpoint.

f0rge 05-28-2014 02:26 PM

Sweet, might still fix it before if I have time.

Think I am going to sit this weekend out, BUT.. I will likely attend and bring my helmet if anyone needs a little ballast.

If you want a ride there let me know, I'll be coming from the north end of Whitby.

Thanks Will, getting an oil change done at C&C Saturday morning and then will take a leisurely drive up there. I'll look you up when I get there though. Gonna bring the camera along. At Picton I had almost no time for photo taking.
BTW you going to the trillium event on the 14th at DDT? Think that will be the next competition I attend.

I might, not sure I want to compete or not though. Last year was A LOT of waiting, too many cars not paying attention to when their run was coming up (blame it on the big car show right beside the track, lots to look at). By the time everyone finished their runs there was only like an hour left for open lapping.

I know they're trying to improve it, but I might just take pictures and spectate this year to see how it goes.

Skurj 06-08-2014 03:27 PM

I didn't make it out afterall.. and looks like I won't get to the 14th either.. went shopping yesterday and ended up in st catherines buyin a used Miata.. gotta go back on the 14th to pick it up..

wparsons 06-08-2014 04:34 PM

I was physically there, but barely there mentally. First three runs I went off course (saw it happening too, I just spaced for a split second... at least it wasn't the same gate each run :p). My fastest run with a time (before penalties) had 8 seconds of cone penalties from blowing the stop box.

Still a fun day though :D

engsr 06-08-2014 05:49 PM

I pretty much threw myself off right from the beginning. The drive down to get lunch was the kicker. I fought the car all day and just couldn't get it going. Not a good day for me but that usually happens after I have a really good event previously.

Great to meet nvortex. Hopefully I didn't give you information overload. You progressed well during the day and you were starting to get a hold of it during my last run with you.

Next event is June 22nd, and registration will open tomorrow. I will post up all the info.

wparsons 06-08-2014 07:24 PM

^^ Does the computer record the time for off course runs at all? Serge was playing with the AIM timer, so even though my first three runs don't count, knowing the times would help make sense of the data on the timer.

nvortex 06-08-2014 07:42 PM

Thanks everyone for all the advice and coaching. Struggled a bit but had a lot of fun. I'll definitely sign up for more events this summer.

Unfortunately, no. When an O/C is entered, the time is automatically changed to 999.99, so unless it's written down before it's entered, there's no way to know.

brzr 06-09-2014 12:24 AM

sucks we missed this one, and will miss the next one too.........going camping

@wparsons how does the course compare to the one hosted by spda back in april?

i guess july 5th will be the one........i hope to go to at least one
