Side splitter project teaser. :)

So, I've been putting this together over the last few weeks. Please mind you that this is my prototype, so I used thinner metal so it's easier for me to shape, and it's cheaper when I throw it away. When I build my final set, they'll be about triple the thickness of these and powder coated a sexy matte black to match my diffuser, and vinyl.

My intent was to create a performance aero profile for the side of the car, I'm very much function > form, so I am sure this won't appeal to some people. Sorry for ya.

These skirts/splitter give a linear 1 inch aero profile drop to the sides of the car, with a 2 inch aero surface extending past the sides of the body work. :) they should seal up the sides of the car pretty effectively. They should also completely out perform everything on the market that is too expensive for me to afford anyways.

It's a very tough part to photograph, I had one of the local guys come by last night to give me some in person feed back. He said the photos don't do it justice.

Feedback is much appreciated.

You're right, it does look hard to photograph. How necessary is the extra width? I wouldn't want an inattentive passenger to kick it on their way out of the car. How does/will it attach to the car?

Also, I like the look of the wing. What's its function?

ihaskrayon 05-23-2014 01:26 PM

Looks rather sharpe in the front. Maybe lightly round or smooth that out?

Good idea in case the various D.O.T. safety regs. and mechanical safety certificates object.

I don't like the 90 angle look at the front. Imagine if you accidentally bump your legs into it. If it's not too difficult from a fabrication perspective, maybe make it taper-out or round.

I'm not expert on aerodynamic but should it be angled? Like lower front and higher end to generate any kind of down-force?

GremlinGSP 05-23-2014 03:16 PM

I think as long as you rounded the front and then put a rolled edge on it that should take care of any sharpness. I'd be worried about getting out and hitting it. Would probably be uncomfortable to say the least.

Wonderbar 05-23-2014 04:17 PM

Like I said, I'm not done. I don't do sharp edges, everything is radius cornered now. I've still got a little work to do on it.

As for angles, it's all about just creating pressure differences, side splitters work by stopping the air on the sides of the car from spilling underneath the car.

There is absolutely zero dot rules governing aero parts like this, at least in the US.

when are you making a front splitter? that's my next diy, but I cant decide on materials.

I'm not. My hancha/ft86sf front splitter is on it's way right now. I will be modding it though.

Candlejack 05-23-2014 04:29 PM

Sharpen it. Do not warn anyone.

Medieval warfare version might be an option.

Roxy86 05-23-2014 07:47 PM

curious to see how this turns out...

Do you have a front splitter to match?

suaveflooder 05-23-2014 07:54 PM

Agreed with smoothing out the frong a little and shortening the sides, but so far, I like what I see!

What do you mean shortening the sides?

That way when you drift you'll be a giant, ankle-slicing blade.

On a productive note, how are you attaching it below?

A factory clip on each end and self tap screw into the frame every 6 inches or so.

Wonderbar 05-25-2014 01:47 PM

Any other feedback?

mousekilla15 05-26-2014 05:25 PM

I was actually thinking about doing this myself. With mine I was going to have a full underbody tray along with the side splitters easily detachable front splitter and built in rear diffuser

Already ahead of ya. :)

Keep in mind airflow for trans and diff cooling.

mousekilla15 05-26-2014 06:24 PM

Yeah I had that in mind, not really sure on how to work with that other than cutouts maybe

Would it be worthwhile to put a vertical bit at the front of the splitter, to hopefully tame or redirect the turbulence coming off the front wheel well?

Also, is it better to have just a side splitter, or an entire underbody panel?

I'm adding a small fin at the front.

All different aero works best if it's a complete system, however it is also stand alone.

Not for the trans or diff, incorporate them into your panels.

mousekilla15 05-26-2014 07:50 PM

Ok one more thing and no more thread jacking I swear. What material do you suggest I heard allumilite is pretty good

I'll only work in aluminum unless I don't have another choice.

mousekilla15 05-27-2014 01:36 AM

Okay thanks

My set up, DLabs diffusor with apr splitter up front. These are exactly what I'm looking for to complete my set up! In for more pics. Your diffusor is top notch and gets a lot of attention!

Here are my prototypes finished up on the car! These look like shit honestly. I dropped them off at the laser cutter yesterday and should have my complete set in the next couple weeks.

Final version is going to be 1/8th inch 5052 aluminum. 1 solid part, no seams, no rivets, powder coated black. It should be amazing! I can't wait.

:eyebulge:

A little overkill there. .080 or .090 would be more than sufficient.

1/8th is only around .13, I want it to be wife/girlfriend/careless passenger proof when they use them as step boards or kick the hell out of them.

STS-V 06-06-2014 11:00 AM

Wile E. Coyote also asks that you include spikes that mount to the center caps of wheels.

Will it be possible to sharpen the exposed edge of the splitter? I need to know for.... reasons. ;)

I spose you could. They'll be pretty thick so it'll hold a battle axe edge well enough.

plucas 06-06-2014 06:29 PM

Looking awesome! Excited to see how they perform :D

I'll shoot you files as soon as I get them. I'm excited to get these on with my Hancha front splitter.
