Did you wait in between the coats? and how long? If you don't get a matte finish, would you recommend wet sanding it anyway and then applying a clear coat afterwards? I don't want a matte finish.

If you want them to look factory, you want to take them to a paint shop and get them cleared by a professional. Just my opinion. It's a pretty minimal cost (ran me $80 in cash)

These are mine:

I will be doing a following video update on my youtube channel. But it doesn't look any different. Its not hard to see at all during the day and obviously now the blinkers appear red rather than yellow

dirtbike250x 05-18-2014 09:32 PM

Would also like to see a functioning video, just to see how the blinkers look now

Spray painted tail lights always look cheap. Just buy TOM'S if you want them to be red.

Best part about this pic is the car is actually pretty dirty!

Painted with duplicolor metalcast ($6) and cleared for $80.

No thanks, I'd rather spend 12 bucks instead of 400 and still be able to stay OEM . Don't be mad you spent the 400 instead of thinking to do this ;)

Lol just messing, in all seriousness, I didn't wanna spend a lot so I just did this a quick temporary fix for now

You don't need to spend a lot to make it look good. Mine look like they came like this from the factory. Hardly cheap looking at all. There are plenty of guys on here with painted tails that look great. @Snowblind is trippin'

I will be having mine cleared with red mixed in by a buddy's shop. He did them on my Celica and they came out amazing and glossy. Props to those that do this themselves, though.

That's AWESOME! I wanted to do the same, just couldn't find a shop willing. I painted the red at the shop with a rattle can and he came in right behind me and cleared them with his gun.

I let it sit a couple hours and put them back on and drove home. Brought them back the next day to be buffed out, although, truthfully, they didn't really need it.

D88 05-19-2014 06:28 PM

Not bad! I think it does look better than stock. My only concern is that it obviously makes it non-street legal by losing the orange turn signal though I have seen some guys tape that portion off to leave it clear so I suppose that can also be done.

Is it really illegal? I was wondering about this. I know older cars were all red, but I HAVE noticed that most new cars ALL have amber. Mustangs, camaros, and corvettes all still use red signals, right?

It's not illigal.

Most american cars have red turn signals.

If you're really concerned, tape that part off and keep that square area clear. I think that's what I'm going to do. The only reason I may do that is because I hate red turn lights :( I do like the look of all red though, they look nice either way.

Doubt its illegal, the prev gen honda civics had red turn signals, along with some Mercedes with red LED turn signals as well. There are other cars that are the same. I've never been hassled for mine

Will it be give to just spray with VHT and leave it? I'd like glossy but if going going through trouble of painting and then paying near $100 to have then cleared I would rather just buy aftermarket

if you are getting them clear coated professionally then it's ok but if you are using rattle can clear, they will turn pink after a while..

Got in an accident on monday. Body shop let me know it IS in fact ILLEGAL to darken or tint tail lights in any way. Guy was still awesome! He said that he wouldn't touch them, but had no problem with me ordering aftermarket lights. Toms are on their way

I'm sure if he wanted ugly a$$ TOMS he'd have gotten them. Prolly trying to be an individual and not like 90% of the other twin owners.
Now he has what he wants and he saved enough coin for a couple other mods.

Snowblind 05-21-2014 10:12 PM

Congrats on toms! Yeah that's true strictly speaking but tell that to people that tint their lights all black. At least the red is transparent and light still flows through. But in terms of red signal lights, that should be fine considering other cars have it

Thanks! I'm excited to get my Toms, even though @Mooseknuckle44 thinks they are "ugly a$$" lights. Out of all the aftermarket options, I think that these are the cleanest and the least "ricey" (probably why they are so popular)

As far as the "tinted red" lights are concerned, that is EXACTLY what I figured. Never had any issues and I have been pulled over with them (tint ticket :mad0259:). They really looked factory, so I don't see them causing much of an issue with the popo.
