Group Cruise: Carpinteria to Santa Paula This Sunday Morning May 18th

Hey folks -

You may have noticed in two other ongoing threads [ Ventura County (805) Car Meets? and Any 805'ers here? ] that a few of us in the Ventura and Santa Barbara County areas are planning to get together for a group cruise this coming Sunday morning (5/18). We'd really like to have a few more BRZ/FR-S owners from our area -- or even from SFV, Santa Clarita and beyond -- join us for a casual swoosh through our local coastal hills. Details are as follows.

Where:
Meet at Rincon Beach Park, just off Pacific Coast Highway (US-101 & CA-1) at Bates Road, between La Conchita and Carpinteria. Wayne and Kay will bring coffee and goodies for early arrivals to munch while we wait for everyone to show up.

Time: 8 to 8:30 AM if you want to cruise by Santa Barbara Cars & Coffee in Montecito; later (10 to 10:30 AM) if not. The early group will swing back by the Rincon to pick up the late sleepers for the longer route to Santa Paula.

Route: Early birds will start with the optional loop to Cars & Coffee, driving surface streets that parallel the freeway through Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito. There'll be a few nice curves climbing Rincon and Ortega Hill as well as cruising past the megabucks beach estates on Padaro Lane, and 'posing' on the main drags of Carpinteria and Summerland. Returning via CA-192 (Valley and Foothill Roads), especially by the Toro Canyon area should be FUN! After returning from C&C, we'll meet others who choose to come later back at Rincon Beach Park. Everyone will then drive up CA-150 past Lake Casitas, though Ojai, up the switchbacks of Dennison grade, and through downtown Santa Paula, ending with an optional lunch there.

Since there'll most likely be so few of us, please invite any of your other friends with sporty cars to join us. If you're likely to do this ride, please post to this thread ASAP.

Is Anybody Out There in 805 Country?

Hmm-mm-mm... sixty views so far, but not even one person posting an interest in participating this weekend. :sigh: I'm starting to think maybe this isn't going to be one of those 'If you build it, they will come...' success stories.

Bonner 05-17-2014 10:25 AM

I would be there if I were not working the Strawberry Festival.

kurbkilla 05-17-2014 12:15 PM

It looks like I'll be there at 8:15.

P@ul 05-17-2014 03:50 PM

Ugh, bright and early...

Kevinmp7 05-17-2014 04:38 PM

Ok so here is the list of people that posted that they are going:

Wayne
P@ul
Ganthrithor
kurbkilla(maybe)
DGMlJDlBRZ
VenomRush
Kevinmp7

Let me know if that is incorrect and feel free to invite any friends.

Please post your final decision before the end of tonight!!

Ganthrithor 05-17-2014 05:17 PM

I'm going to try and meet you guys at Cars + Coffee since it doesn't make much sense to drive down to Rincon and then turn around and drive back.

I should wash my car this evening :D

I spent half the day detailing mine :party0030:

My car is covered with dust and spider webs. But there's a good chance I'll see you guys at C&C tomorrow, I just won't be able to make the cruise..

Yep, B&E it is; Kay and I are about to hit the road, getting prepped for the ride today, and eager to meet some new 86ers. On a ride with our cycling group yesterday we saw a white 86 (too late to determine its ethnicity), and I found myself trying (futilely, of course) to think of a way to invite its driver to join us today. We'll see the rest of you Don't Just Talk About It; DO IT! folks later this morning...

Well, actually, our 86 cruise -- the first multicar meet in the Ventura/Santa Barbara County area? -- went pretty much right on schedule. Five cars met at the Rincon, and we caravanned up to Cars & Coffee. I had what might have been a near-miss encounter with the CHP as I set up for a brisk left turn from Via Real onto the old Santa Claus Lane underpass, then realized that a black-and-white was around the corner under the freeway, writing a ticket for an SUV. I overbraked into the turn, hitting a little patch of sand and getting a small tailwag. At the next corner we discovered that Padaro Lane was closed to thru traffic, and all five of us had to U-turn and parade back by the glaring CHiPPy.

We went first to Montecito's Upper Village, thinking they'd permanently moved Cars & Coffee there for more parking. WRONG! We zipped back to Coast Village Road, met Julian [aka Ganthrithor], checked out the exotic hardware and buzzed back to Rincon on CA-192 -- really fun except for a few miles stuck behind a woman on a touring motorcycle that probably outweighed her by a factor of 4 or 5. She refused to pull over, but we finally got a couple of clear passing zones, and had a little bit of fun before we got back to the beach and met Jermaine [aka DGMlJDlBRZ]. Here's a snapshot just before we took off for Santa Paula; not shown is the one-day-old Focus ST that was part of our group until Erik [aka kurbkilla] and Zach turned off to Ventura at CA-33. The SLK280 is our friend Stephen's; the 86 sect was represented by three FR-Ss and two BRZs.

We got pretty lucky for almost the whole route on CA-150, with very little interference for swooshing through the fun parts, especially climbing Dennison Grade, before cruising downtown Santa Paula and stopping for lunch at Tia Babe's. Was this a really FUN way to spend a mid-Spring Sunday morning? I'm not telling you; you'll have to come find out for yourselves, maybe the next time we do this sort of thing...

Ganthrithor 05-18-2014 08:40 PM

< Julian here. This morning was a lot of fun! The roads were a little more crowded than usual, but we really lucked out getting Dennison Grade all to ourselves (and the traffic after that was moving pretty quickly too!). It was fun meeting you guys: hopefully we'll do this again sometime!

Kevinmp7 05-18-2014 09:01 PM

Had a great time and I hope we can do this again. Sorry that I couldn't join you guys for lunch as I had a little family emergency to tend to. I think Ganthrithor's suggestion for a cruise up highway 33 would be our next meetup. Like Wayne stated, this would probably be in mid to late July. That gives us a lot of time to plan and get the word out.

DGMlJDlBRZ 05-18-2014 09:57 PM

<<< Jermaine here. Thanks for letting me tag along guys! Had a blast zooming through the 150. Thought I wasn't gonna make it through the whole way with a couple close calls with opposite traffic lol. Can't wait for the next one!

kurbkilla 05-19-2014 11:46 AM

Erik here.

This.

That lady was a pain, and we could see her looking in the mirror at us, so she knew we were there and wanted to get around her; but she just would not pull over.

Anyways hopefully next time there wont be as many people on the road and I could bring my car.

P@ul 05-19-2014 12:01 PM

Thanks for organizing! It was fun to try some new roads out in SB. I'll definitely stay tuned for the next one!
