Interesting section in manual: Event Data Recorder
Looking through my manual on page 17 Scion discusses the Event Data Recorder which in the event of a crash records:
How various systems were operating If seat belts were buckled How far the driver was pressing the accelerator and brake pedal How fast the car was traveling This info can only be given by owner's consent, or by police request, or by Scion in the event of a lawsuit. Drive carefully my friends! |
The thing should only be turned on by owner's consent. Hmmmpf. Have to figure out a way to write all zeroes to its memory.

It's got a black box!?! cool :)
|
Almost all new cars have these things... There's legislation in the works to require all new cars to have them by 2015
Big brother is watching |
So does the BRZ have it too?

:D Fosters is our export beer, you can't actually buy it here, maybe in Melbourne but nowhere else. We use it to keep everyone else under control ehheh :p
no really, knowing that my entire conversation with the control tower will be recorded and used on me if I crash on re-entry will definitely keep me and my lead foot locked down and out of trouble :) maybe we should all be issued suits with bubble helmets... forgive my exuberance, this is the first I've heard of these things. |
almost every car out has had boxes like this for decades. pretty much if you have airbags, there is a "black box".
|
There was a thread on this in the BRZ section IIRC. It only records for a maximum of 30seconds, then records over that data. Its not streaming data back to Toyota, so Im cool with it.

Does anyone know where the ft-86 EDR is located?
I also noticed an electronic like box located under the trunk floor mat on the driver's side near the back seat. What is it? |

Yeah, they're just disclosing that big brother is watching...

My 05 Mustang had it. Ford, however, is more blunt in the owner's manual. They say the data can be accessed by law enforcement if needed. So if your 'event' totals your car the data leading up to the 'event' can be looked at and your claim that you weren't going 97 in a 35 MPH zone before you plowed into a wall won't really hold up. ;)

The box is under the center consol. It is integrated in the airbag control module (ACM). If you remove it or disable it, your airbags will not deploy in the event of a crash.
I'm sure the brz has it, the Bosch tool (or any other commercially available tool) cannot download the brz to date ... This could and probably will change in the relatively near future |
Something like 96% of brand new cars have some type of 'black box' device. Soon it's going to be mandated (like TCS is) on all cars.

I love this.
Literally 99/100 of the unintended acceleration cases were people with their foot on the wrong damn pedal. Shutting them up and shutting their ridiculous lawsuits down will go a long way to lowering vehicle prices.... Haha, I can't keep a straight face. They will save money and pocket the difference. The auto makers pretend they don't want this, but nobody wants to be the next Toyota, quibbling in court over some he said she said crap with $100 million at stake. |
EDRs in the Scion
I saw an earlier post were people were upset about the EDRs being installed in the FRS's. These are similar to black boxes in planes that record certain data during a wreck. Like how fast you were going. Did you hit the brakes. That kind of thing. Now these boxes are more common in cars. However, now a federal law is about to go into effect to mandate them in all cars. I work in the computer field and a concern with this is that this law does not specify certain restrictions. For now they only collect data and do not record sound. However, there is nothing in the regulation that says it is never to allowed recording of sound nor that they can never add a gps. Some people in the computer field are afraid that it is a way to get around the requirement to go before a judge to have a wire tap or have them follow your activity on your gps. Some people feel it is the problem of putting forth technology without looking at the ramifications.
If you want to comment on this federal regulation you may go to http://www.hslda.org/docs/news/2013/201301180.asp to submit your opinion till Feb 11th. |
Funny how we all object to these intrusions looking over our shoulders. However, keep in mind that in any case where the data is being examined, there will be two parties involved and the goal is to arrive at a fair and legal judgement. If I were the agrieved party and suing you, I would welcome the data.
Me. I hate the freaking things and see a lucrative market for anyone that can figure how to spoof the program to only store fractions of a second of data or a constant loop of sedate and responsible vehicle activity. |
