3D Printed Double Din Adapters

I just made up a set of adapters to make double din head units fit our car nicely. This is a first test and are just pressed in. I made them in red because that was in the printer; but I actually kind of like it.

Ideas are always welcome! I have plenty of minions; I mean students who can use projects ;-).

I love it! It is much more responsive than the stock unit, runs torque via usb cable, and google maps.

Im not super familiar with android HU, but how does it run google maps without data? Map files and GPS antenna?

I tether to my phone using FoxFi, and I have unlimited data.

One like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Android-4-1-...item338e916d44

I'm very happy with it.

FoxFi is questionable

FoXFi is questionable....it may or may not work on with your phone

It works for me.

Would you be interested in making more for folks in the community?

cmspooner 05-16-2014 04:11 PM

Yeah...but I need to get filament purchased so that I'm not using school materials for outside work. My own projects I use to demo what can be done.

mkivalex 05-16-2014 04:36 PM

Nice Work!

As a fellow engineer, I REALLY wish I had access to a 3D printer. My one friend works for a 3D printing company that can print medical grade titanium....jealous. I've asked him to print some stuff up for me and its FAR from cheap

cmspooner 05-17-2014 07:44 AM

The plastic printer is not that expensive to run; 2.6 pounds of filament is between $25 and $35. I have a makerbot and a cube. The makerbot is a far better printer; but it is $2000. The middle school might be getting a DaVinci printer, which is only $500...but I'll have to use it before I know if it is worth it.

what do you do if no service? I just went on a trip this week and couldn't get google maps working on a significant portion of the trip. Good thing I knew the way. Maybe because it was a lower tier carrier (t mobile) but I imagine it would suck losing service when you need to get somewhere you don't know where you are going.

cmspooner 05-17-2014 09:32 AM

I have my area cached on google maps; but thats a good point. I could always buy an android gps app with downloaded maps if need be.

I wish they just sold a replacement plastic dash piece for the smaller width radios. Surprised nobody has made one yet.

cmspooner 05-17-2014 10:14 PM

There is one for sale but it didn't fit right

c0rnel 09-11-2019 10:22 AM

Hello. Thank so much for the dash trim files. I modified them to fit with my car and radio, but the inner perimeter of my radio was exactly the same and they help me so much.

If anyone want it the files are here https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3856257
