Servicing with street Illegal parts
Hello everyone
I wan to install K&N CAI for my BRZ, and as it appears its street Illegal in some states including NY. What are the implications of showing up to a dealer for a service like oil change with illegal part like CAI ? :confused0068: |
They can impound your car. Most states won't bother, but CA and NY are hardasses.
|
I have no front license plate, clear side markers with LEDs, tinted windows and a muffler delete all which are illegal in my state and my dealer had no problem with changing my oil and doing maintenance.
But then again in depends on your service advisor. Talk to them prior to allowing them open the hood of your car see what's okay with them if they say anything negative about it go to another dealership. Or just call from a blocked number and ask questions if you're still concerned. |
Lol

So basically the dealer has a choice
to take action in those cases where he sees something not street legal installed on the car or act as if it didn't happen ? |
Look at it this way... if they call the feds on you, how likely are you to spend money there ever again?
They have nothing to gain from reporting 'illegal' parts.. |

I just called my dealer, He said they will service the car even with after market parts installed, when I asked them about after market I didn't mention the words street illegal. but its only CAI by K&N unlike deleting the whole exhaust system. so hopefully Ill get it on soon.

Should be fine as long as the CAI doesn't have a big "This is illegal" sticker i don't think there will be any issues. Good luck! |

I've never heard of a car getting impounded from a dealer for aftermarket parts. That's crazy. |
Nothing will happen. I used to service modified cars when I was a Service Tech at Toyota. The only thing you should be worried about is if you're going in for a warranty claim and they concluded the aftermarket part caused the damage.
TL;DR --Nothing. |
laws are for breaking, especially lame ones

i dont think you have anything to worry about
back when i had my SRT4, i had some decent work including a cat less exhaust and Dodge dealers never gave me a problem or even mentioned anything to me about it |

First, you shouldn't be going to your dealer for an oil change...
The problem will come up if/when you ever have warranty issues related to the engine. They can (not saying they will) pull up the fact that you had or have a CAI on your car. This may have some implications regarding the warranty. I see you are in NY, depending where you should come to us to get your oil changes done. Also, your stock intake is perfectly fine. There are 100s of threads that explicitly state drop-in filters are the only worthwhile upgrade, and you should be spending your money on other upgrades before a CAI.

If you are going to bring your car to a dealership for service, bring it to a mod friendly dealership. Most dealerships will put a notation on your cars service records in their inter-dealer systems which are accessible by all dealerships and corporate offices of that make ie Subaru dealerships and SOA. Which you can bet they will then try to get out of any warranty issues if you just so happen to have to use your warranty.

I took my street illegally modified BRZ (aftermarket intake and LEDs everywhere) in to a dealership once for an oil change. It immediately spontaneously combusted in the service bay, burning everything they had in the shop and showroom.
I'm not allowed back in that dealership anymore. I can't understand why? |
The shear amount of trolls and idiots takeing them serious in this thread, is too damn high
