Headers UEL vs EL
Hey guys, looking at some videos of Subarus I've got to say I really like the sound of the boxer with an unequal length header. I know that apparently EL is better in terms of performance, but if say I was to upgrade do a full exhaust and intake upgrade, how much difference would an aftermarket UEL be comapred to aftermarket EL? I think the FR-S/FT-86 would sound great with some UEL's, but I don't wanna make it slow!

did it come like that stock? or did you change it for sound reasons?
|
The performance differences are honestly negligable... a few percent power / tq and 100-300 rpm quicker spool, depending on who you ask.

Reason I changed it to UEL cus it was on sale. :bellyroll: But seriously if I had the money, I still chosen UEL. Sound reason, is part of it, but not all. They say the UEL give you more low end power while EL gives you high end. My car is mostly DD car, so rarely uses that high end power... Also, I had my ECU re-mapped, so lack of high end been somewhat fixed. I wish my heads & cams were re-grind, but... my budget didn't let me. :( |
cool, good to know-sound from the nurburgring mule made me think that the FR-S will come with EL stock though. Hopefully aftermarket will jump on that and give some UEL options! :D

i honestly don't want that trademark subaru rumble coming from my FT. equal length for me.

Porsches sound DRASTICALLY different than Subarus. you'll notice i said "subaru rumble" not "boxer rumble." ;)

How bout this Impreza w H6 engine (EG33 iirc) sure in hell doesn't sound like it Subaru rumble to me. It sounds more like V engine car. [u2b]X839LaP15ek[/u2b] or even this EFI Impreza, which btw has EG33 engine with N/A H-6 320whp and 276wtq @ 8200rpm, SAE corrected. This one sound more like F1 or some of high rev (like Honda) car to me. [u2b]wqnuj58lFQI[/u2b] & this too [u2b]gkfC2k0AZPQ[/u2b] |
sure. if you'll sleep better pretending that you don't know what i'm talking about, then go ahead.

EL for me please. I'm not particularly attracted to the rumbley sound UEL provides. I prefer a smooth sound I guess is how I'd describe it.

i was just kiddin' round & yes, I know what you meant. |
Equal length.
Unequal sounds broken and like poo. (don't hate me.) |

However I read a while back about some Honda racer or tuner had throttles that opened like a camera shutter/iris. Same idea but lighter, smaller and faster. |

ITBs provide better throttle response - popular among the NA crowd and standard on BMW M cars.
This guy, I think, just has a bunch of money and a machine shop. But it looks awesome, anyway. |

well... yeah. that's why I put the part about it being awesome and the guy has cash and a machine shop :D

ITB's are pretty badass but I didn't think they're very streetable mainly because they're so hard to tune for and ruin gas mileage so I guess it would be only a mod for track-days cool video though
|
What about a equal length header with an electronic diverter valve on one side that effectively turns it into un-equal length. Then, depending on your mood, get either a deep rumble or a nice whine.

I too was looking at some videos on the 2 types and we'll have to see what ends up coming out. I'm all for the uel sound but if I can get something El with the same or at least similar sound I'd probably do that. Though if the performance isn't that different between them I'll just go uel.

Just listening to my friend's STI, UEL<3
|
any recommendations on brand choice ?
