Headers UEL vs EL

Hey guys, looking at some videos of Subarus I've got to say I really like the sound of the boxer with an unequal length header. I know that apparently EL is better in terms of performance, but if say I was to upgrade do a full exhaust and intake upgrade, how much difference would an aftermarket UEL be comapred to aftermarket EL? I think the FR-S/FT-86 would sound great with some UEL's, but I don't wanna make it slow!

Same thing, EL > UEL... but I have UEL set up on my Impreza

Decameron 06-30-2010 09:28 PM

did it come like that stock? or did you change it for sound reasons?

bigbcraig 06-30-2010 10:32 PM

The performance differences are honestly negligable... a few percent power / tq and 100-300 rpm quicker spool, depending on who you ask.

Stock comes EL header.

Reason I changed it to UEL cus it was on sale. :bellyroll: But seriously if I had the money, I still chosen UEL. Sound reason, is part of it, but not all. They say the UEL give you more low end power while EL gives you high end. My car is mostly DD car, so rarely uses that high end power... Also, I had my ECU re-mapped, so lack of high end been somewhat fixed. I wish my heads & cams were re-grind, but... my budget didn't let me. :(

Decameron 06-30-2010 11:25 PM

cool, good to know-sound from the nurburgring mule made me think that the FR-S will come with EL stock though. Hopefully aftermarket will jump on that and give some UEL options! :D

NESW20 06-30-2010 11:50 PM

i honestly don't want that trademark subaru rumble coming from my FT. equal length for me.

When did the Boxer rumble was trademark of Subaru? Cuz, Porsche owner prob don't feel the same way.

NESW20 07-01-2010 12:17 AM

Porsches sound DRASTICALLY different than Subarus. you'll notice i said "subaru rumble" not "boxer rumble." ;)

What's Subaru rumble?

How bout this Impreza w H6 engine (EG33 iirc) sure in hell doesn't sound like it Subaru rumble to me. It sounds more like V engine car.
[u2b]X839LaP15ek[/u2b]

or even this EFI Impreza, which btw has EG33 engine with N/A H-6 320whp and 276wtq @ 8200rpm, SAE corrected. This one sound more like F1 or some of high rev (like Honda) car to me.

sure. if you'll sleep better pretending that you don't know what i'm talking about, then go ahead.

Siriusly.Andrew 07-01-2010 03:54 AM

EL for me please. I'm not particularly attracted to the rumbley sound UEL provides. I prefer a smooth sound I guess is how I'd describe it.

I did sleep well. :) But
i was just kiddin' round & yes, I know what you meant.

OneJoeZee 07-01-2010 04:36 PM

Equal length.

Unequal sounds broken and like poo.

(don't hate me.)

That's your opinion, so yes I can hate you. :bellyroll:

My neighbor used to think that this Subaru that lives nearby was a Harley. Used to roll by every weeknight at around 11:30pm. Never saw the thing but sure heard it.

Yeah, when you set up the exhaust system right way, it can make Harley bike sound.

You can make any exhaust sound w UEL. UEL doesn't equal to Harley. Some of STI's or WRX that has EL make Harley sound. It's all depends on cat & cat-back. Almost nothing to do w EL or UEL.

cyde01 07-05-2010 07:50 PM

el for me. why don't you make this a poll?

can you make the third option for "don't care" or "haven't decided"?

Midship Runabout 07-06-2010 02:49 PM

Dont care

Decameron 07-06-2010 08:48 PM

damn, sorry I knew I should have made a 3rd option-there doesn't seem to be a way to change it unless I'm being dumb

Abflug 07-07-2010 07:44 PM

BTT: what about the UEL (or EL) + this little gimmick: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1175829 could be fun

Interesting idea on the throttles, WOT is really wide open, no obstruction at all.

However I read a while back about some Honda racer or tuner had throttles that opened like a camera shutter/iris. Same idea but lighter, smaller and faster.

what's da point for having separate throttle like that? i rather have rally style intake manifold. that's way easy mod w more options.

bigbcraig 07-14-2010 11:41 PM

ITBs provide better throttle response - popular among the NA crowd and standard on BMW M cars.

This guy, I think, just has a bunch of money and a machine shop. But it looks awesome, anyway.

Yes, on NA cars, it'll respond better... but Turbo I don't think it will. IF it did, they would already made one (Specially from Prodrive), but there isn't much different in responses for Turbo, so they didn't make it (correct me if I'm wrong).

bigbcraig 07-16-2010 11:43 PM

well... yeah. that's why I put the part about it being awesome and the guy has cash and a machine shop :D

Oh yeah, also I think you missed the "that guy is also stupid to waste $" too :bellyroll:

Decameron 07-17-2010 04:59 AM

ITB's are pretty badass but I didn't think they're very streetable mainly because they're so hard to tune for and ruin gas mileage so I guess it would be only a mod for track-days cool video though

nate89 07-18-2010 12:56 AM

What about a equal length header with an electronic diverter valve on one side that effectively turns it into un-equal length. Then, depending on your mood, get either a deep rumble or a nice whine.

I've never heard of that, but I imagine it would be needlessly expensive and would be difficult to make durable

C-Bone 07-24-2010 11:44 PM

I too was looking at some videos on the 2 types and we'll have to see what ends up coming out. I'm all for the uel sound but if I can get something El with the same or at least similar sound I'd probably do that. Though if the performance isn't that different between them I'll just go uel.

jyoo 08-17-2010 04:40 AM

Just listening to my friend's STI, UEL<3

tnt 08-31-2012 01:00 PM
