your biggest "beef" with other car trends?

Whats your biggest "beef" with other car trends?

I have many b/c I'm an old fart.

1. Big cursive stickers on front windshields that no one can really read and blocks the drivers view. WTF is the point?

2. Taking a "sports car" (like the 86) and stretching out the tires. I don't understand. Clearly "function" is not a high priority here.

3. The "Stance Movement". Getting the car as LOW as possible and having so much negative camber to "look good"? Not practical, not overly functional, and in my opinion does not look good.

At our local "Cars n Coffee" event there is a very small lot to park. More parking is on the strret in front of the place or across the street in a dirt lot. In the small lot I want to see rare cars. I want to see a F40 parked there. I don't want to see that f40 parked on the street or in the dirt lot.

On the other side of that I don't want to see a cambered out VW in primer with Audi wheels to have prime parking so that F40 parks on the street. I don't get some people or trends.

To each their own. Its your car and enjoy it. Don't mind me bitching about what I like and don't like. BUT- know you're place! Primer was never meant to be a color. Camber was supposed to HELP cars perform. Windshields were supposed to protect those inside a car and still provide clear visibility - big cursive stickers that no one can read anyway and block your view do not help you or make your car look cool.

For all you 86 owners out there that this MAY apply to. Try an autocross event in your car or a HPDE. Try using your car for what it was BUILT to do. THEN you will appreciate what you have!

/end old man's rant.

I don't understand the Thule bike rack on the roof of this slammed GTi in my neighborhood. That kid doesn't ride a f&%king bike. Ever.

Spoilers on front wheel drive cars.... like, really huge ones.

Stickers. Everywhere. Most for parts they don't even have.

Those dangling stuffed animals from your rear bumper. WTF?

Dropping so low you can't drive anywhere. Yea your car looks fast and probably is.... but not anywhere outside a nicely paved track. "My car is low and fast yo! But.... I cant go over railroad tracks/speedbumps/driveways/sewer covers/lane markers/painted crosswalks...."

I think you and I would get along just fine.

Shocker stickers.

RedFRZ 05-03-2014 07:59 AM

My biggest "beef" is with this forum. The forum is very narrow minded. You buy can frs/brz? you must automatically track it, drift it, do HDPE, etc. If you didn't do any of those, you're wasting a sports car.

Some people use the cars as daily drivers and as grocery getters. For others, just simply a means to get from Point A to Point B.

Now everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Why can't others just build THEIR cars how THEY want? Sure, i may not like the "stance" movement either, but is it my car? No.

To Each Their Own.

That is like saying FWD cars don't need rear tires because they don't drive or steer the vehicle. Spoilers can do everything from manage air separation (this matters in reducing drag) to providing downforce. If your car doesn't have enough rear grip, a rear spoiler can be useful on FWD. I'll concede it is relatively rare that a FWD street car will need a spoiler due to lack of grip, though.

No, no it isn't. It's saying "huge" spoilers on FWD look stupid. Thanks for the aerodynamics 101 though.

Anyone know where I can get a "SCION" windshield sticker in cursive?

I was just about to comment on that, but you beat me to it. It seems to be a popular misconception that just because a car is FWD, it won't benefit from rear-end downforce. There are plenty of race-prepped FWD cars setup to oversteer. In those instances, stability in higher speed corners is a good thing. Realtime Racing isn't running a spoiler on the back of its TSX for looks.

But if just talking about OEM-stock FWD cars, then yeah the spoiler is probably for looks. Just as it would be for most OEM-stock RWD cars.

The spoilers on pikes peak vehicles look stupid, but they are functional. The canards that everyone is slapping on their 86s these days are just as ridiculous as the winged FWD vehicles you hate. Most aftermarket/OEM "aero bits" on road cars are for looks than anything else.

I have passed 400 level aerodynamics courses and done some work in wind tunnels (airplane wing cross sections rather than cars, unfortunately), btw.

I was under the impression that it was my money and I will spend it the way I want it to be spent. I do not care for stance cars or putting stickers everywhere. However, I do respect the person who does do all those things mentioned above because it was their hard earned money.

I read a lot of car comparison in this forum. FRS/BRZ vs [car insert here]. At the end of the day, your not paying for Mr. Smith's car. So it concludes to me that if you want to be around a certain type of people or car, go join that club. Joining a forum where opinions are just that opinions and have no merit, it means little to complain or bitch about stuff.

I use this forum for many things - including bitching at my old age. I'm entitled to do so.

It is their money and they can do with it as they please. I think it doesn't make much sense and I'm voicing my opinion about it. Nothing more.

I'm not attacking anyone.

headlikeahole 05-03-2014 09:04 AM

My beef is with the "it's my car I can do whatever I want with it" crowd.

The same ones that are ruining this fun thread. We just want to rant people, it's not a agree/disagree thing, its just a rant.

Staggered wheels (rear larger than fronts) on fwd cars. Seriously?!

fatoni 05-03-2014 10:26 AM

i cant stand when people ask for opinions and then people give those super aggressive opinions (track your car or its a waste etc.) and then people get mad about it. i mean on one hand, your smoked tailights and carbon wrapped roof are stupid and you asked for it. on the other hand, maybe we dont need to be that big of a douche about it.

Apoc 05-03-2014 10:40 AM

My biggest beef is people using the word "fitment" incorrectly FRICKEN EVERYWHERE. It's a noun.

fitment

English

Etymology

fit +‎ -ment
Noun

fitment (plural fitments)
  1. (archaic) Something that suits or fits.
  2. A thing fitted to another in order to accomplish a specific purpose.
  3. An item of permanent furniture or equipment.
  4. The act of furnishing with fitments; an instance of such an act.
  5. (India) The categorisation of an employee, for the purpose of calculating salary or allowances.
  6. The proper positioning and orientation of a thing for it to serve its designed purpose.

Manufacturers that BADGE SPAM from the factory.
(One of my coworkers recently bought a new FORD FUSION, understandable then that it would have those two badges. But then it also has TITANIUM and ECONO-BOOST on the trunk lid. I don't think the car has a turbo and I don't think it's made from titanium)

Hybrid cars always have GREEN and/or BLUE colored badges.

PZEV.
(Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle. WTF does that even MEAN? Again, also green and blue)

The stigma of automatic gearboxes.
(I've owned a good dozen sporty cars with manual gearboxes. And sport bikes. I've served my time. I want to enjoy my morning lattes on the way to work and not have to justify myself to every boy racer)

"Hey, you know what FIAT stands for don't you? (and without waiting for an answer) Fix it again Tony!"
(If I had a dollar for every time somebody told me this, I'd have enough money to BUY a Fiat. They always seem to think it's incredibly funny, and that they're the first ones to tell me this. For the record, it stands for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, and mine was dead reliable)

Dadhawk 05-03-2014 12:01 PM

I've got some OEM Peeves...

...Chrysler what the heck is WRONG with the Dodge name? My first car was a Dodge, the Viper is a Dodge, the Ram is a Dodge. Embrace it, don't deny it.

...Ford, I get you bought Aston Martin. That doesn't mean every one of your freaking cars including the new Mustang has to have DB9 style headlights. I wanted an Aston, I'd have bought one.

...Scion, stop with the bling crap on special edition and actually make them special. Slam a flat-6 in the 86 (86/6 anyone?), build a 4WD tC that will win a rally, but keep the light-up emblems.

...Toyota, give up on Scion. Its holding you back. Oh and Lexus shouldn't get your top of the line sports cars either. Like Chrysler/Dodge embrace your wild side. It will do you some good.

...Chevy, bring back the Astro. Best family vehicle you ever built and it really was built "Like a Rock". Thanks for the C7 Vette though. One day one will be mine.

I saw a riced Corolla a couple of weeks ago that was lowered to the point that it was almost scraping the pavement and had a ridiculous amount of camber on extremely wide tires. It also had a huge oversized wing on the back. LOL If i wasn't driving in heavy traffic I would have taken a picture. Yes they are out there!

Rampage 05-03-2014 01:07 PM

Shark fin antennas on everything.

LED running lights on everything

Calling every car (suv and truck) Sporty, sporty feeling or a sporty drive when clearly most of them are not.

You gotta love automotive marketing (not)!

I'm not "old" and I agree with this, but not "because racecar." I just think it straight up looks stupid.

I also hate when people apologize for their cars, like Scion or Subaru is paying them to do so. Our cars have rattles and noises they shouldn't have. Don't apologize for it with the some stupid argument like "it's a cheap sports car, what do you expect." My girlfriend's Honda Fit that costs $10k less new doesn't have these rattles, and neither did my '93 240sx, and this list goes on.

I also really hate the "because racecar" argument. It's so cringey reading these threads with people saying they hate automatic climate control, or HIDs, or push to start "because racecar" and none of these things are necessary. I guess you also removed all of your speakers, and your head unit, and all seats other than drivers, and your air conditioning system, "because racecar," and you don't need those things. It's like me sitting here and saying, "man, the new Corvette has too nice of an interior, so it's a terrible track car."

kosoku 05-03-2014 01:14 PM

This thread is fun.

I hate big dumb trucks, and the drivers wear white sunglasses.

I hate when idiots always say "too bad it isn't a manual".

I hate 16 or 17 year old kids buy a 20 year old MR2 and think they are king shit.

I hate cavaliers and sunfires with body kits and exhaust from walmart.

I hate when wannabe gangsters put chrome rims on an SUV that is a piece of shit.

I hate BMW's.

That's like having a racist freely rant about what's his mind without having any backlash.

The VW camp is famous for this. Stupidest thing I've ever seen. I can understand running a reverse stagger (front wider than rear) on a fwd car. Sure. But sticking your wider wheel on your non-power end is dumb as fuck. Basically tells everybody how much of a tool you are. Rwd wannabe lol.
