200+ WHP Naturally Aspirated on 91 Octane

Greetings All,

Most of you remember when we broke 200whp on a completely stock brz with E85. If not, see thread here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55591

Well, we've done it again. This time around we've hit 200whp with 91 Octane on a Naturally Aspirated BRZ with a stock engine. Mods included were a JDL UEL Header, JDL Over Pipe, and JDL Front Pipe. There may or may not have been a drop in filter or intake on this particular brz, I'm not entirely sure.

First I'll show the graph from Bill's BRZ, which made 200whp on a Dynojet on E85 and just a few hours later ran on this dyno:
http://i59.tinypic.com/6ef9ed.jpg

Our dyno reads a bit low as you can tell, however this was the same vehicle on the same day, just a different dyno. A baseline run is shown for gains.

Now, here is the BRZ on 91 Octane with the JDL Exhaust on the same Mustang:

http://i59.tinypic.com/vctf2r.jpg

Nearly the same numbers, this car on 91 would edge out just over 200whp on the same Dynojet that Bill's personal vehicle ran on, which belongs to DSPORT. The best part about this one is that the torque dip is GONE, compared to the stock car on an E85 tune.

Hope you all enjoy the numbers! :burnrubber:

EDIT: Just realized you may have meant stock catback. If so, derp on my part.

FR-S Matt 05-01-2014 08:06 AM

Yet another JDL UEL pushing 200 WHP, very nice. These kinds of posts make me so glad I went with their header.

I really need to dyno mine as I'm on 93 octane with a JDL UEL, JDL overpipe, Invidia catted front pipe, and Invidia N1. I want to get 200 as well.

raul 05-01-2014 08:17 AM

I'm waiting for an opportunity to put my car on a dynojet. I've got full Nameless exhaust sans midpipe and I also run 93. I've already put down 177whp prior to any tuning on a Mustang dyno, which according to the OP's graph, should be just over 200whp on a dynojet. With my tuning now done I expect the numbers to obviously go higher, perhaps 205-210whp. That would be nice. :)

SirBrass 05-01-2014 09:20 AM

Looks close to what nelsmar managed to do to a car in late December on a car with the exact same mods.

Glad to see someone else pull it off, as certain detractors doubted the veracity of 200 whp on 91 octane on a Mustang despite proof.

Now we've got an independent repeat. Excellent!

Edit: wait a minute... You're saying 200 whp on a Dynojet. Darn it. It's doable on a Mustang on 91 octane.

On phone I am. Therefore, if mistakes I make, Frank Oz blame you should.

tahdizzle 05-01-2014 11:28 AM

:) Can't wait for even better tunes!

Stock catback as far as I know, I wasn't there when this one was tuned. The catbacks really don't make a difference on these cars other than sound. Keep in mind that this Mustang is absolutely uncorrected, and is quite the heartbreaker. We've made more on the FR-S race car with 98 octane on this dyno, and that motor has cams, but I'm not at will to publish that dyno quite yet. :) Let's just say by the time it's ready you all will be quite impressed. 200whp NA on 91, on an uncorrected Mustang is going to be quite the feat.

Sincerely,

Zach

Awesome to hear. Especially since I was already planning to keep the stock exhaust too for stealth/incog'ness.

I'll personally be going back to the stock catback because I can't stand the drone of the Invidia N1 on there. ;)

How is this 200 HP?? Looks like both runs are in the 175 ballpark. Are you insinuating that it would be 200 HP on a DynoJet or at the Crank?

Chad, if you reference the link at the beginning of the post, you'll see Bill's car making the 200whp run on the DSPORT dynojet. The first graph on this post is the same car on the same map, running on this mustang dyno just several hours later on the same exact day. The second number is a customer brz on 91 octane with a jdl header on our mustang dyno putting down nearly the same power that bill's car is on the first graph. If that isn't a solid enough reference as to what Dynojet numbers are, I don't know what is. :)

What he said.

Now if you want us to hit 200whp on a Mustang Dyno that will take a little more work. Since that would be close to 235whp on a Dynojet. Though we are getting close at 193whp on this Mustang Dyno. More to come on that one...

Loud aftermarket exhausts, big +4" tips and shiny mufflers are for the kiddies... Jk lol. But stock exh imo is way better and classier for a dd... You don't see Porsche or Ferrari owners putting on loud ass shiny canister mufflers with 5" tips on their cars, now do you? lol ;)

No sir, but I personally wouldn't mind a nice Akrapovic system on a Ferrari or Porsche ;)

I have a nice, shiny 4" exhaust that rumbles nicely but is otherwise quieter than stock. All hail the q300 (it's very quiet even hooked up to UEL uncatted headers, & resonated HFC cat front pipe)!

the brz on 91 octane was untuned? Would an el header make more power?

We do not really seem much of a power increase without a tune with headers alone. Though we do see the dip in the mid range removed by quite a bit. So though it may not help the top end it does help the midrange and low end quite a bit.

FR-S Matt 07-10-2014 04:10 PM

These headers are nuts. Glad to see them in the hands of a reputable tuner yet again proving how solid they really are. Makes me happier and happier every time I pop the hood and see that JDL badge on my chrome coated UEL. :)

Now push 93 octane and go for gold!

So what are your cost to tune a Car when we are in Puerto Rico?

We are very impressed by this numbers we tune here at 93oct and full mods and we are not at 200whp on dynojet.

I will like to see the car do the 200whp on dynojet and that way we are not asuming that he have 200whp on dynojet even with your explanation that makes sense.

But solid inrefutable prouf need to be present here to claim 200whp on dynojet...we need to see a dynojet chart.

Hold on just a second while I pull a dynojet out of my back pocket ;) In reality you're right, that would be ideal, however we don't always have time to drive back up to DSPORT to use their dynojet. That said, a baseline with Bill's BRZ on the same day at the same relative elevation between the two dynos being discussed is about as close as it gets without having a readily accessible Dynojet. This is a reliable way of measuring the percentage difference between dynanometer readings and is not in any way the same as saying "Well hey this Mustang reads super low"; more like "Hey this Mustang reads such and such percentage lower than a Dynojet and here's proof from the same day with the same car".

Hope that helps.

Zach

And I'm not avoiding having the car run on a Dynojet at all, fact is our customer with this 200whp JDL setup doesn't have all the time in the world and probably wouldn't be too keen on driving 100 miles and paying for another dyno run to prove that perhaps, maybe, it would read + or - 2whp than what is calculated. It's just not realistic.

I assume this is with an uncatted FP. How much whp will suffer with a catted FP?

Also, looking at this link, the first graph (1st Dyno was with a full exhaust system, ECU retune, and 91oct provided by our customer) only yielded ~180whp with pretty much the same setup. Why such a big difference?

I understand tour theory, sounds rationale and all is just that claiming an achievement as good as 93 octane 200whp should come with irrefutable proft, I like you you guys have been working with this plataform since day 1, but is a big statement 200whp on 93... just will like to see it thats all. Even with the explanation and all.

F1fletch 07-24-2014 01:33 AM

I want to use a catted front pipe and catted header sooooo wonder how bad that will hurt me on hp with the tune. JDL's catted UEL is being tested now. Hope this and their exhaust actually make power. Stinks that the exhausts are just for sound and don't really help power :(

That's not a particularly fair comparison considering that A it's a Maha and B it's an FA20Club tune if I'm reading the description correctly? I can't really comment on why a car with a different tuner's tune on a specific dyno I've never run on would read differently. :P

91 Octane :) And I understand your concern, but hopefully you also understand that it's not everyday we get a customer in with the JDL setup on an NA car with our 91 tune and happen to have the time to find a Dynojet to send him to :P Perhaps we can dig through and find this customer but that's entirely up to him if he wants to go and do a couple passes to prove a point for us :) In the end it's up to you whether you want to take our word and the information we've provided with it or not. We thought it was noteworthy as it's by far the highest NA numbers we've had on our Mustang on 91. There was no intention of trying to start a debate or claim king of the hill status, just a milestone we are proud of and still looking to top.

If one were to go with your Stage 2 tune with headers, front pipe, and over pipe woudl the setup still be compatible if I were to upgrade to a Vortech Supercharger kit?

I figure they are since these exhaust components are separate from any front mounted supercharger kit.

Also, would the same 200 WHP on pump gas be achievable with JDL's equal length headers?

You should be able to use the same exhaust components with the Vortech supercharger, I don't see why not. Of course the map will have to be changed compared to an NA map, but that's a given :) JDL's newest equal length header should by all means perform just as well as their unequal offering.

Ditto. I would like to see it too. But it seems like it's been forever and we haven't seen any.

Currently, we're only depending on hearsay and also only that 1/single car's dyno example they provided in the op. No 3rd party tests/dynos yet. Actually there's one; but he only made around 165whp (uncorrected) on a dynojet on a supposedly hot day. Even with correction and and taking into account the hot day; this is still a far cry from the claimed 200whp on a dynojet. I am kinda doubting you really lose 30 NA whp from a hot day, or 10whp per additional 10deg hotter ambient temperature.

No excuses needed...just hard data and dyno sheets is all we want to see.

The Dyno does not lie ;)

I completely agree. Working on it on getting those results, but realize we work on a lot of projects every day and do not have the man power (namely me for the most part), not a Dynojet to show the numbers everyone wants to see. But we are working on getting those results for everyone.

Here is a dyno comparison between stock and our Delicious Stage 2 Tune. Please review the "P Norm" to compare it to a DynoJet numbers. As requested we are working on get the DynoJet numbers everyone is looking for.

As you can see in the dyno chart the baseline reads just about 179 for a stock BRZ on this dyno or about 137 in heart breaker mode.
