Have you scratched your wheels?
Wife made a turn a little too close to the kerb on the weekend. As a result, rear left rim was scratched, lucky it didn't hit the panel. Got some scuffs on top section of the rim now.
You guys still have pristine rims? If this already hurt, I can't imagine scratching those expensive aftermarket rims/wheels.... |
hit some unexpected slush last winter and rubbed the wall, hit pretty square so most of the damage was the rim scrubbing as it rotated. got a scratch/dent around the lip of the rear quarter fender that I have been pulling out with the pops-a-dent thing, but some touch up paint and a buff and it should be fine.
|
Made the mistake of letting sister's boyfriend drive the car. First wound on my baby was the front right wheel curb. It hurts extra when you are in the car to feel the damage being done and it's not you behind the wheel.
Strongly contemplated buying and new stock rim for $100 lol.. Sent from my HTC first |
Yep at a drive-through. The car is pretty low so I try to get pretty close so I can actually reach up to the service window. Got a little too close and rubbed the driver's front. It left a bit of a rash :mad0260:
It is not too noticeable but I still get upset about it. But I've had my eye on going aftermarket or the TRD wheels in the next couple years, so I try to shove it out of my mind... |
Yeah that scraping sound - especially when you hear it the first time - it's so heart breaking isn't it?
|
I had hit my wheels a few times trying to part too close to the curb and going through a bank drive-thru ATM with a narrow ass lane. I've gotten new wheels since then and am very, very careful. I just get out of my car now instead of driving through narrow lanes with curbs on both sides.
|
Drive thru ATM's exist?
Murica! Fuck Yeah! I always tilt my left mirror (RHD) down when I parallel park. But I always forget it's tilted down when i drive away and then go to mirror check and I'm like :mad0260: Need to stop doing that. But no scrapes for me so far. I had a paint chip off one of my black wheels when the guy was mounting my tyres but I have a matte black paint pen I keep in the glove that instantly cures them. Apply, leave for a minute, then drive off and thus spin dry. |
Aftermarket wheels on previous car for 3 years. 0 curbs
Stock car 3 weeks, 1 massive curb. I guess the steering was quicker than I was used to from previous car and I took an on ramp and hit the curb on the apex lolz. I was in my honeymoon phase and bought a new wheel a few days later. But I never installed it because I realized its just a car. I'll put it on when I get new tires. |
I thought I nailed the left front on my way out of my parking garage the first day I took the car to work. The rubber scraping against the barrier around the garage card swipe machine was loud and I thought I may have heard a bit of metal-against-concrete. All the way home, I was tempted to stop in the middle of traffic and jump out to see how bad it was. But the knowledge that I couldn't change it kept me sane enough to get home in one piece.
When I got home & jumped out of the car, I saw what looked like 6" of BAAAD curb rash and got that awful feeling we all know and love. Fortunately, I grabbed a paper towel and gently tried to gauge how deeply I'd damaged it.....and I discovered that it was all paint and gook that must have been on the barrier. It all came off, leaving a gently scuffed tire on an undamaged rim (and some gradually diminishing adrenalin shakes on an upset me). A few more minutes with wheel cleaner and tire dressing and I was good to go - and a lot more careful! |

I'm very careful about curbs, parallel parking, drive-through windows etc. but accidents happen. Luckily, there are plenty of companies out there that specialize in fixing wheels

Not in this car just yet. I had aftermarket wheels (Some fairly cheap enkei's) on my previous car. I tagged this same wheel on three different occasions when the wheel was on three different corners. Not sure why I hated that wheel so much, but it was a dark gun metal and a sharpie cleaned it up to a 5 foot scratch :).
|
I used Plasti-Dip on my black Enkei's and it worked perfectly. Blended extremely well.
|
Scraped my rear passenger side wheel cutting a turn to hard in the city, jumped the curb and scraped up the edge of the rim and took a small chunk out of the side of my tire. Spent the rest of the day hating myself for being stupid.
|
Very small mark that no one else would notice; however, I know its there so I'll claim it! I backed in parallel to a curb and before pulling out I turned my wheel which put the mark... Oh well, she's a daily driver and if that's the only scar I have then I'm happy!
|
rub = :(
Yep did mine the first day I had the car. Order a rim from a place online. Have yet to swap it yet as I have had the car less than 1 month. Tire got a little chunk out of it too. Will do soon but not that worried since I have the replacement wheel. The pain is the a$$ is I will need to swap over the sensor too but should not be a big deal. Guessing the tire / sensor swap with balance will cost me $25+.
Just went to local PedBoys...they want $50+ tax to do the swap and balance? |
One of the reasons I like the 215 series tires on 7" RPF-1s on my Miata- the tires will rub before the wheels hit:
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ars/RP-F1s.jpg Of course, nothing will save you if you're determined enough... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ars/Owwwww.jpg :confused0068: |
I answered "no" to scratching the rims, however I have caught a few curbs with my tires. Thankfully the stock tires on the FRS stick out a bit more than the actual rims itself...I have been extremely fortunate, but I know my time will come.
The other day I was sitting in traffic, watched a pristine white 2014 camara take a right turn into the nearest lane. I believe the driver overestimated on how close the oncoming car in the far lane was actually approaching, cut the turn too sharp and the sound her rear wheel made on the cement curb made my heart hurt for her. However, she just kept driving....I don't know how far she got because her back tire wasn't too far off from this: http://home.worldonline.co.za/~blomj...ues/corsa6.jpg |
My wheels haven't itched yet.
|
Better to scratch the crap looking OEM wheels than the car.
|
I can relate to some of these stories. When I had my brand new 2010 Cobalt SS turbocharged, I hit a curb within the first 24 hours (I turned my head to change the radio and when I did, I apparently turned the wheel as well). Bent my front rim and nicked my rear rim, but bent the rear hub. Other than that, no body damage. $1100+ (includes parts and labor) of damage ($600 for the OEM rim. It was 18x8 forged aluminum rim :bonk:). Eventually got aftermarket rims and had some road debris (did not even realize it) put a nice deep scratch in one of my new black aftermarket rims :mad0260: With this car (BRZ), I decided to leave everyone alone (a.k.a. stock) and so far, no issues with my rims /knocks on wood.
However, I have two nice scratches on the car (through the clear coat). As someone else said, it is just a car :\ |

14,000 miles and the wheels are pristine. Too bad I got a door ding/scratch on the right rear quarter panel:sigh:

I got a very small bit of curb rash on my back left wheel the first week I owned the car since I wasn't used to parking it - then I stopped being dumb and started using my mirrors which makes it very easy. It was already small to begin with but it got even less noticeable after I got my car opti-coated (which included the wheels), and I do plan on getting new wheels down the road when I decide on what I want, and have the money for it.
After that I haven't had anything happen - although I still get very nervous driving into the parking garage at my work which, like others have described, involves a very narrow lane that curves heavily. I'm always worried about the edges of the bumper and the wheels. I just sit up and take the turn slowly. Sorry to hear about the little accident OP! :( |
My Genesis had bad curb rash on two rims (one my fault and one the boyfriend's). After 36K mi my silver BRZ rims were still pristine. Have 1200 on the new WRB with no issues. This car is so narrow I just don't have an issue. Haven't even scraped the front lip in the BRZ and I sure did in my Genesis. Maybe I'm just being more careful? :iono:

slight curb rash on the front passenger side rim (stock rims btw) just last week when pulling into a curb at work. I wasn't paying attention for that one second and didn't look at my side mirror. Sleepy mornings am I right? haha It's right on the edge so it's not that noticeable. I'll attempt to wetsand/fix it and see how it goes...should be a new and fun repair project.
I know it sounds bad but I got use to minor scratches here and there on my daily driver. After one mishap on the passenger side of the front bumper (lightly scraped a concrete column when pulling into a parking spot), I realize it's not that hard to fix if you have the patience and want to learn more about car repairs/detailing. You should see the underside of the front bumper.... My rationale is that if I completely scratch the bumpers, etc, it gives me reason to slap on m0ar aftermarket parts! :D |
Nope, not the stock ones nor the 1.5" wider aftermarket ones.
In fact, I will have the stock ones w/ stock tires up for sale as soon as I can get a chance to take some pics. |
Let my brother borrow my car one day and he scratches both left rims hitting something on the road.. figures.
|
uggh, i came online solely to search for "scraped wheels" and this thread came up. perfect timing. I scraped the rear wheel on a curb just now.
Is there anything that can be done to "fix" it, whatever that would be? My wheels are stock. I like them, plan on keeping them forever. Serious suggestions only please.... |
there are wheel refinishing companies all over the place that might be able to do something, but you'd need to contact one of them to get an estimate for how much it would cost to get refinished..
|
cool, thanks. i wasn't sure where to even start short of buying new wheels everytime... i will look into some places near my area

[QUOTE=JonAvalon;1702042]This happened to me as well, the damn curb on the ATM went longer than I expected and when I was pulling out I didn't realize how much of it was left since I was in a hurry.
Funny you should ask as I hit mine today for the 1st time after going through the bank drive in teller. Had to get close to put deposit of check for $11.14 into tube and curb went long. 1inch rash. Darn, can't even blame the wife and it was not worth the deposit. |
I was looking at another guys FR-S in a wendy's drive thru, took the corner and caught the curb. Took a small deep gash out of the drivers front, and then a 8" scrape to the metal on the rocker. I was so upset I just drive straight home thinking everyone was looking at my brand new car with this "I'M AN IDIOT" gash on the side. Luckily it wasn't as bad as I thought, and its under the rocker so not noticeable really. still.. resale value :(
|
3 instances of curb rash on mine (Work Emotion Kiwami's)... All have happened while hungover
It bothered me a bit immediately after but in the grand scheme I don't really care, it's gonna happen. I'd rather have some curb rash than be that anal guy that parks/drives like a grandma because of his wheels. |

so the other day i accidentally turned a little too sharp at a corner and caught the rear wheel on the curb.. my last car ran wider rubber, so it was never a problem(did the same thing a couple of times, but the wheels never got scratched), but with the stretched rubber on this car, it got the rim...
but luckily, it was just the top of the wheel ;P |
