My Boosted BRZ

I've been a member on the forums since I got my car back in October, but never got around to making a build journal on here. I have one on another local forum, but I figured I would make one here as well to get some feedback from fellow FRS/BRZ enthusiasts, as well as some suggestions on where to go from here.

It's a 2013 BRZ Sport Tech. In mid-October of 2013 I flew from my home in Winnipeg to Calgary to pick it up, then drove it home. It was a bit of a pain in the ass to drive it that far within recommended guidelines for the break in, but it gave me a chance to get to know the car fairly well. My first impression that it was loud on the highway, it was very choppy, and slow but had a lot of personality.

I work for a Toyota/Lexus dealer in Winnipeg, so before I left for Calgary I had already ordered my first part: TRD Exhaust, and shortly after getting home, some suspension parts and wheels. At about 3000km in mid-November, it started to snow and the car was put away.

Note: The original plan was to do basic stuff like intake/exhaust/header/tune and go from there, but ultimately the memory of flooring it and being underwhelmed was stuck in my head.

Here's what ended up happening over the winter:

(and yes the man door on the side of the garage was open. It's about -25 celclius outside so I didn't have the big door open :)

... and that's how it sat, seemingly done until spring came around. I lasted about 2 weeks before I eventually said fuck it and decided that I'm going to keep the car a long time and I may as well enjoy it.

protpibe 04-19-2014 01:44 PM

So it was at this point (some time in late December) that I was chatting with my brother who is a terrible influence when it comes to this stuff. We both agreed that there was no point in spending hundreds and thousands of dollars for 5ish whp here and there. So at that point I decided to cut my losses on a couple of parts I bought and do it properly. I ended up going with the AVO Turbo kit for the OEM install and look, moderate but safe boost levels, and good placement for heat management. I ended up doing a bit more than that though

Kartboy Shifter

I wanted a pretty decent sound system and I had some good luck with JL, Alpine, and Dynamat in my 4Runner so I figured I would give the BRZ the same treatment

After:

I also didn't like the silver BRZ interior trim so I started collecting black aussie pieces. Most of it was available through Toyota Canada at our parts dept at work
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/24/sy2ajury.jpg

Some minor dynamatting of the floor boards. I ended up doing the whole interior, trunk, and trunk lid. It will add about 40lbs, but worth it imo for the benefit

While waiting for my big box of AVO parts to come in, I took the bumper off to prep for the install. I took the time to mount the Hella Supertones. They dont' block the intercooler at all

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...30427028_n.jpg

Everything installed. Part of my dislike for the Cusco setup is that the lines are showing. I prefer a clean install. I've recently ordered a dual catchcan setup from Saikou Michi that will hide everything properly. Another issue with the Cusco is that the AVO turbo adds a 2nd breather line and requires tee fittings everywhere
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/18/yje8y2eh.jpg

I bought this for no other reason than I wanted some interior bling. I think the solid red button adds such much needed contrast inside. It serves no functional purpose, but I love it. One of my favorite mods.

2nd gauge installed! I love this vent pod from Block8head. The gauge is an AEM Failsafe

Another one of my favorite mods. Euro Toyota arm rest. Worth every damn penny!

This is another one of my favorite parts. They're custom PCV/Vent hardlines to run over to the battery area where the dual catch can will be. Less hoses = more clean! As stupid as this sounds, these are one of my favorite parts and I can't wait to install them

Before putting my car away for the winter, my GF told me that she hates my car and doesn't want to be in it due to the choppy ride. I figured my springs needed dampers to smooth things out, but if I'm going to upgrade the dampers, I may as well do it properly. I sold my Hotchkis lowering springs to a local 86 owner and picked up some HKS Hipermax IV GT's. I've had the car out for 2 weeks and I'm shocked how well these ride. Worth every penny. I'm dropped 1 3/4" and it's as close to OEM ride as I could of asked for. I'm running them at 10/10 for stiffness, but will dial them in soon. Unfortunately, the Perrin endlinks are way too long to work with the HKS Coilovers. I'm assuming they won't work with any coilovers since the sway bar came nowhere near clearing the control arm.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...68036512_n.jpg

Bumper reinstalled finally. The car spent probably 2 months on jackstands since it was stored for winter, but spring was approaching at this point and I wanted to get it back on the ground

I mounted a Vibrant vacuum manifold onto the drivers side fuel injector cover with riv nuts. The fish eye of my cel phone makes it look a tiny bit crooked, but it's dead straight in person. I recently changed a couple of the vacuum port locations to clean up the install a little bit. This is also one of my favorite mods I did over the winter. It looks like it's supposed to be there
https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...27362515_n.jpg

Another part from one of my favorite places to order from. it replaces a factory vacuum line with a tee'd line so I didn't have to cut into any rubber hoses. Again, very clean install! It's located behind the intake manifold bolted on top of the engine and was a 100% perfect fit.

Motul Gear 300 for diff and tranny
https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...64590571_n.jpg

here's the sketch for my custom catch can setup. 1 can is for the breathers and has a 2nd port being installed (1 for the drivers side vent, 1 for the AVO vent). The other tank is for the PCV system and I'm installing a check valve to make sure positive pressure isn't pushed into the crank case.
https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...56446594_n.jpg

This is now current. I've had the car out for a couple of weeks now and have noticed a couple of issues. I'm 99% sure my TRD exhaust is a GIANT bottle neck. It goes down below 2" in the resonator section, so I took this as an opportunity to upgrade. My intention is to go full 3", so for the time being I tapped the shoulder of my favorite fabrication guys in the states (no names, he's not a vendor, but a great guy to deal with). I usually just send him a Facebook message saying "Can you make this for me?" and it's done asap.

So anyways, I ended up ordering a Perrin 3" non -resonated cat back, and replaced my straight through front pipe with a custom 3" catted one. Here's a shot of the 3" front pipe with high flow cat. At my request, he welded in an o2 bung for my wideband
https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...30086246_n.jpg

One of the other things I was really disappointed with was the sound of the turbo. I saw sportsguy on here had an AVO turbo mated with a Perrin cold air and it sounded unreal, so I followed suit. The perrin 3" catback and intake should be here in a couple of days, and the front pipe will be here Monday.

Blitz oil sandwich plate installed. This is a UK Market Blitz part for the GT86. It's raised so the ports will clear the lip around the oil filter platform. It has a port for temp and pressure

Great minds think alike and all that? lol  I checked out your build thread, it looks good!

I should be getting some proper pics of the car this week to post up. The snow is pretty much gone here, but it's still pretty messy in spots. Tough to keep a black car clean

Thanks. The hard to find stuff is usually the stuff that I'm most pleased with. Those hardlines are probably one of my favorite parts and I can't wait to install them with the catch cans.

Another small update: Bill and Zach @ Delicious are sending me out their new SD MAP tune, a boost controller, and a MAP sensor. I'll be running a couple different maps between 7psi and 10psi.

qtwre 05-05-2014 10:27 AM

You didn't go for the 11? Why not the 11? Get the 11. ;)

You're using the AVO BOV, right? As I understand it, since the SD doesn't need the MAF, you should be able to vent away without running a little rich momentarily. That's a nice bonus.

protpibe 05-05-2014 10:53 AM

lol yeah I'm not sure. I was apprehensive even getting 10. Once i get it all dialed in, I may up it a bit more.

And yeah I have the BOV 50/50. I don't think the MAP setup would be sensitive about releasing metered air so I guess you could go with a 100% vent setup. Unfortunately, the AVO is either 0 vented or 50% vented, not 100%. You would have to go with an aftermarket BOV or just leave the return hose off the AVO 50/50.

I actually kind of like the 50/50 setup. You can hear it, but it's not ear piercingly "look at me!!!" loud. Cops up here can be a bit of a PITA when it comes to modding cars so I want to draw as little attention to myself as possible

protpibe 05-05-2014 05:48 PM

Actually, it turns out I'm goiing: 1: 7psi on 91, 2: 9psi on 91 and 3: 11psi on 94

qtwre 05-05-2014 10:11 PM

There it is. :)

I went with 1: 6psi 91oct, 2: 7psi 94, 3: 11psi 94. Basically map 1 is just the safe map.

alpine 05-05-2014 11:49 PM

man... this sure is a clean build. Why do you say that the cusco catch can was a waste of money though?

protpibe 05-07-2014 12:21 AM

Yeah that probably wasn't proper wording. I found it to be a waste for my application for a couple of reasons.

-it has one inlet and I need 3. I spliced the 3 together, but I would prefer to keep the breathers and pcv separate. That's just me being picky
-the can is the only polished piece in my engine bay and I feel it looks out of place

Otherwise its a nice quality piece, it just didn't fit my needs and wants

protpibe 05-18-2014 03:10 PM

That's a different one. Mine came with a long wiring harness. Seemed perfect length to mount it at the front. Shouldn't be hard to lengthen... I would take longer wires over long vacuum hose

qtwre 05-19-2014 10:48 AM

The turbo sounds so good when you're on it in a high gear. :)

I noticed you're getting compressor surge on the street though. Have you thought about loosening the adjustment screw on your BOV?

protpibe 05-19-2014 10:54 AM

Yeah I noticed that too. The BOV is the AVO 50/50 unit, so I wasn't sure if it was adjustable. I'll take a look tonight. It only flutters at low boost, so I wasn't overly concerned

qtwre 05-25-2014 01:19 PM

Are you getting 11psi or maybe a little over or under? I read the value from the ECU and find I get 10psi on my 11 map. Trying to figure out if it's simply a tune calibration issue or if I have a leak. I haven't found any loose hoses.

protpibe 05-25-2014 10:20 PM

I'm getting about 1psi less than I should be on all my maps, which I'm guessing is due to my leaking header gaskets. Hope to have that resolved through AVO asap

Hmm, so you're saying your 11psi is more like 10, and your 9 is 8? I wouldn't think it's a problem with a leak because if you can do 10, the 9 should be spot on.

My base map doesn't use the boost controller as far as I know. I have the 6psi actuator and find the boost is really closer to 5. My theory is that Bill's duty cycles are based off what the spring pressure is supposed to be, so if it's low, all the targets end up being low.

Which gaskets did you use btw?

The reason I thought that is because my waste gate is set at 7psi and I'm hitting 6 or so on map 1. I'll find out once AVO gets back to me on a fix for my header (hoping a replacement)

I'm on my 2nd set. The first ones were Grimmspeeds and now I'm using OEM.
