Those look a lot better than I thought they would. Great pics of the headlights! The LED bar is perfect!

Might need to pick these up. Winjets are getting boring. But for $500, I'll wait a little.

Meh, I wasn't really interested in them then. But now I am, haha. If I can find someone to buy my Winjets, I'll buy these.

There's there's this thread, the customer whose vehicle Thomas installed them on, with a few glamour shots. No video of them in use. No pics of the cutoff on the car against a wall at night. No night time shots.

I'm looking for a bit more as are other perspective buyers.

The review basically said they are not worth buying [if your primary concern is actually using them as a headlight] and have the lowest output of any of the lights currently available. If you have the skills and abilities to upgrade them, than maybe they would be good enough. That is what he said - I think that is enough of a review for everyone.

Yet it's not enough. There's more to it. I spoke with him on the phone and he gave many options as well as stating that half of the units were defective, which could lead to the problems with the set he had. Furthermore, the OP thinks the lights are fantastic so that's two opposite ends of the spectrum.

STS-V 04-17-2014 04:40 PM

So what is the final answer on needing the DRL mod or not?

ecko04 04-17-2014 07:45 PM

Updates

I received my Spec-D lights from UPS today. Thanks for the speedy shipping @fteightysix

So here's the low down. I have not installed mine yet but I did some bench testing. I'll post some pics momentarily.

Wires:

Headlamp harness (4 wires)

Red (+12v), Red/Black (Ground) = These toggle the high beam actuator
Blue (+12v), Blue/Black (Ground) = Positive trigger for the low beam headlight. Essentialy these turn the headlight on.

Other 4 remaining wires.

x2 Black (Ground) - x1 ground for the high beam actuator. x1 ground for the LED boomerang, turn signal and low beam headlight.

Yellow (+12v) - Amber turn signal

White (+12v) - LED boomerang

Do you need a DRL mod?

You DO NOT need a DRL mod for these lamps!

Those with the FRS can essentially opt to NOT connect the yellow wire if you don't like the amber within the lamp, after all, you have turn signals in the lower bumper.

For the FRS, if you want the boomerang to remain lit at all times as long as the headlights are on or the parking brake is dropped, you can wire them to the +12v in the turn signal harness. I'll verify which wire this is tomorrow when I complete the install.

The LED boomerang color changes depending on what angle you look at it. I don't believe there is an HID kelvin temp perfect match.

Once I complete the install with my D2S 5K HIDs i'll post more pics.

May sound needy. But could you do a DIY of the install? I'm curious about the turn signal.

I won't do a DIY. There are tutorials and videos out there on how to take the bumper off, remove the headlamp, etc.

I'll take some pics of where I tap for power with the wires that need to be connected. That should be enough to get you going.

ecko04 04-17-2014 09:39 PM

Now with pics from the bench

Thank you so much for this post. Basically I want the boomerang on whenever the ignition is on, with headlights on or off. Also, do you recommend a relay harness when using a D2S Hid kit?

Alltezza 04-19-2014 04:59 AM

God those head lights are sexy! I love that LED too I feel like its a lot more brighter and more noticeable than the stock BRZ head lights

I really like these headlights, but I feel like the "boomerang" looks like a glow-stick in the majority of the photos where the light isn't solid all the way through, or starts to look like dirt or some impurities are stuck inside of it.

Is this just how some photos are making it look, or is the quality that bad? This image in particular highlights what I'm talking about:

That photo was taken with my phone from directly in front of the lamp, no more than 5 feet away. The camera was compensating for the light.

The boomerang isn't 1 solid LED. It's a series of LED chips. This is done to ensure consistency of light distribution. The break-off in light is where one chip ends and the next begins.

To the eye, the boomerang looks like the other photos that have been posted.

They'll work on a BRZ for sure. Might be some simple different tweaks to the way you wire it, not certain about that.
