2013 vs 2014

Hello folks,
I recently fell in love with the fr-s, now it's time to get one! I see used 2013s around 22k while the new 2014 is around 26k. Where there any changes between the years reliability wise ect.? Would it be worth saving around 4 grand for the 13 or pay more for the 14? Thanks for the input guys. JJ

If I could do it again I would get a used one for cheaper, caring for a brand new car can be a pain at times.

Hi jayjules and welcome.

The base models in 2013 are about the same in 2014.

You can get a new 2013 model for a bit less than the 2014.

Don't bother with a used one for 22K. At that price, you might as well get a new one.

jayjules 04-09-2014 03:07 AM

I'm going to some dealerships tomorrow. Hope I can find the one for me.

Chen 04-09-2014 04:35 AM

Don't buy one hoping for power. That's my advice.

SuperDave 04-09-2014 04:35 AM

if you've waited this long, might as well wait for the TRD edition or the BRZ S edition, if you're into that sort of stuff. Also if i were you i'd get a monogram FR-S if possible.

tdoggy57 04-09-2014 04:56 AM

Might as well wait to see what's going to change in 2015!

Knee pads or a new lighted symbol not much else lol.

I was once in your shoe, just got mine in Jan. I did some research, and of course they're not much differences to the two. I even went to the dealer ship asking for the 2014, and they didn't have one in stock. I asked if there were any differences too. Even the dealer didn't think there were a differences to it. I end up getting myself the Special Edition Scion. It's a 2013 and if I'm correct it basically got what the 2014 have. I could had waited to see what the 2015 got in store for us, but I waited too long to wait any longer. If you could wait, wait and see if they're adding anything interesting to the 2015 scion.

Any ideas on the release date for the 2015 or are there just rumors?

J_kennington 04-09-2014 01:43 PM

Production starts June from everything I've seen posted

jayjules 04-09-2014 01:45 PM

Ive been reading about chirping noises coming from the fuel pumps of the earlier models. Has this problem been resolved in the newer models?

strat61caster 04-09-2014 02:01 PM

Touch screen head unit would be the only noticeable difference for me, it's gotten mixed reviews, happier with the 'crappy' unit on the '13.

Most cars chirp at some point, there's no point worrying about it unless you think it would turn you off the car completely.

jlugo711 04-09-2014 02:46 PM

2014 has kneepads and a "improved" touch screen radio. Cricket noises are complimentary of any model year.

gily25 04-09-2014 03:14 PM

Take a trip? The dealer I bought mine from has a new silver 2013 BRZ discounted to $23k.

Yup. I feel the same way

The latest B01 factory flash TSB is an important reason to buy new. The 2012 build factory tune was crapola. I'm not convinced that 10k mi on the early tune was good for the engine long term. Buy new or wait till the 14's drop to $15k or so.

Just don't expect the Supra's price to be anywhere near the FR-S.

dnieves 04-09-2014 11:11 PM

<applicable to all sporty cars> If you buy one used get a top to bottom inspection as what's available in the used lots have probably been driven like they were stolen by car nuts that got tired of it prematurely.

when is it expected that a 2014 FRS will be down to 15k?

Honest question.

It's not expected. No one can know how the resell of a brand new car will work. In my opinion, for it to drop to 15k...I would say another 2-3 years. It's 2014, dealers are still offering 19k trade in value on the 2013s.

MHz 04-10-2014 10:29 AM

I Just Switched From A Asphalt 13 To A Whiteout 14 (NEEDED That Color lol).
The Spoiler Resembles That Of A BRZ . . . Could've Just Been The Dealer.

As in you traded in your asphalt and bought the whiteout? Do you mind me askin what value your dealer put the 13 at if so?(on the trade in...)

Clean cars are still going in the $20-$22k range with lots of miles on them, 2 years old and roughly $3k depreciation I'd gamble at least another 4 years to see prices under $16k for a decent car at this rate.

Of course this is barring any changes to our perception of reliability or major revisions to the model. If the 2016 comes out with ridiculous improvements that don't break the bank demand for the first generation will drop, if production ceases I wouldn't be surprised to see prices jump.

Despite poor sales there are S2000's still asking prices >75% of what they cost new.

I don't think we can compare this car to an S2k as far as depreciation, convertibles typically spend a lot of time in the garage. Also the S2k did have a big dip in price on the used market at one point.
I'm still kicking myself for not buying my coworkers perfect S2k for $15k a few years back , he had a hard time selling it.

For sale by owner we should see some good prices in just a couple years. Of course no-one knows but the used cars dealers at 22k are probably marked up quite a bit over true trade-in (they play games and you never really know what you're getting on trade in.).

I remember when it was common to see 2005 Lotus's for $20-$22k by owner on autotrader.

There is usually a dip in used car prices typically first or second year cars a few years after they have been new but are still in production.

Only 2 ways to know what a used car is worth one is to go to /read dealer auctions or try to sell one yourself.

The used car market has gotten crazy in the difference between lot prices and owner sales. I would be surprised to get more than $18k on my 2013 FRS trying to sell it myself (12k miles.)

The other thing to look for is high miles, typically these are cars driven on long interstate commutes which is practically zero wear and tear.

Last when the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty is up prices take a big dip. So summer 2012+3 years. I'm going to gestimate $15k for sale by owner next year.

Glad we agree! I checked it out and Edmunds agrees with your self valuation, $18k trade in for your area, $20k private party. Guess we'll see who's right in about a year with you estimating a >$3k drop in 12 months.

I bought a 2013 in March. I paid $21,151.79 -- Honestly, knowing I can trade it in an assimilate the difference in cost for an extra $10/mo on my payments, I've debated trading in for an ultramarine. Just love the color. But all that being said, I'm fine staying with the 2013 I have. I love the car, enjoy driving it, and never expected the power.

My fiance wants the whiteout, and there is something about these cars that's just enigmatic.

Here is the 2015, BTW:

2014 has a factory foglight install option.
At least according to the Canadian scion website (build and price, its a manufacturer option, not a dealer option)

But if your buying used from dealer anyway you can still get these fogs installed.

So the dealership wants $27,315 out the door for the 2014. Is that decent or should I try to get a better price?

Seems way high for an FRS, I would check around. I paid 24.5k in August 2012 when they were as hot as a $2 pistol.
