Where did you start with your FR-S/BRZ

I'm going to start with little things like a better air filter, tinting the windows, and some shifting items like whitelines rear tranny bushing and maybe a short throw shifter, or just the stiffer components for better shifting. I'd like to eliminate the noise maker part of the intake and plug it up, those are simple. For now, I'm just going to start slow and try not to get carried away.

I did read of an ECUTEK tune from someone that put down 200 rwhp, that would be sweet, but not just yet.

Wife already doesn't like the wheels, so that'll be an easy sell once I wear through these Prius tires.

Just curious as to where others began and if they jumped in with both feet or are just incrementally improving the car as they go. My approach will be incremental.

And lastly, what's your favorite upgrade, and why.

Mad1723 04-04-2014 09:25 PM

LED kit was one of my first mod. Simple to do and changes a lot the look of the car once running. I also installed Weathertech mats and RallyArmor Mudflaps, for the winter here.

Then came the hood struts. Then the Lachute catback got installed this week. Now, I have a Cusco catch can to install, JPM shifter boot on the way, Perrin drop-in air filter, cusco pedal, oil change for diff and transmission, OFH on the way...

Oh god, I got the mod bug, haven't I?

cycleboy 04-04-2014 09:35 PM

If you want to plug up the sound tube, that's less than a minute mod and totally free! Open the glove box, look for the 12V outlet at the upper right, take off the cap. Peel back the carpet in passenger's footwell and shove the cap onto the hole. Done.

I think my first was clear sidemarkers.

I'm not going too far with mine, but it can be addictive I admit!

My favorite is definitely wheels/tires.

jeepmor 04-04-2014 10:12 PM

I forgot about weathertech mats, those are on the list too. I'll prioritize as such.

Cleanliness and chip protection -weather tech floor mats, tinting, paint protection.

Performance drop ins - air filter, shifter tune up, stiffer tranny mount, urethane bushings. Simple one day or less installation stuff.

Then hog wild, eventually on the spendier items. Lower an inch, new shocks, sway bars, turbo, tires, wheels, etc.

I dig the input for ideas, thanks.

BigFatFlip 04-04-2014 10:29 PM

My very first and most favorite mod is the fumoto oil drain valve. Subaru already made it much easier to change the oil filter, but this just made it so much easier changing the oil. Perfect for that night of prep before a track day.

Creole 04-04-2014 10:35 PM

I got the weather tech mats, and swapped LEDs in all the lights lol

i think that anybody who jumps into mods without having the experience and understanding of what the car is in accordance to what they desire is foolish and doing themselves a disservice. there are rules of thumb (something along the lines of tires, brakes, suspension, power) but everyone is different so spend some time with the car and see what you want to be different, then change it.

fistpoint 04-04-2014 11:02 PM

I added the trunk mat for added rearend stability due to the increased weight...it works like the traction bars on old Mustangs.

headlikeahole 04-04-2014 11:39 PM

Red out my tail lights. Best 15 bucks I've ever spent.

I think this car was designed FOR the tuner crowd and people can do what they want with their money. Sound advice, but a bit high on that horse is how it comes across.

jebuwh 04-05-2014 12:00 AM

I did drop in filter/ resonator delete, then oft, then red taillights haha. Next is coilovers and wheels and tires. Or maybe header. So many options. That's what's awesome about this car.

wrxgoose 04-05-2014 12:03 AM

started with UEL headers, and just kept going.

8R6 04-05-2014 12:13 AM

put in HID's the day after buying the car. then ordered clear sidemarkers, toyota/gt86 badges and cf trunk lip. then red tails and just got wheels and springs this week. front lip, sides and exhaust are next and then front swaybar and im done.

tyrantcf 04-05-2014 12:26 AM

I'm thinking window tint first, it's pretty much a must have where I live. Followed by an air filter or intake and wheels/tires. Not sure what I'd want to do after that yet

Chimera 04-05-2014 12:31 AM

I did tint first, then went into stereo upgrades, in which you can dump a lot of cash.
then again not as much as wheels..

How does the oft work, any gains with that and the air filter even if small?

Oft is epic. I'm on the e85 tune. I can't remember what the exact HP gains were but man it rips now. Best money I've spent on the car. I highly recommend it. If you're around socal I would happily give you a ride!

N1rve 04-05-2014 02:01 AM

I had a BRZ Spoiler custom painted in silver ignition first. It changed the look of the car drastically!

They let you track with one of those oil drain valves?

chas3wba0 04-05-2014 02:26 AM

The essentials:
1. Clutch pedal height adjustment, for driveability
2. Tint - I can't stand owning a car without it
3. Exhaust - Whether you get a catback or JDM tips, those dinky factory ones gotta go

Naturalaspirations86 04-05-2014 02:50 AM

I quickly went to work when I got mine.

1. HIDs 8000k (ice blue look)
2. Cold air intake
3. LED day time running lights
4. just ordered some new side markers

I'm planning on redoing the entire exhaust system like chas3wba0 mentioned those exhaust tips have got to go. Also those who are tuning for performance, don't forget that radar it helps!

ET86 04-05-2014 03:26 AM

First, I got HID's, 5 axis spoiler. Then my factory rims were stolen, so I got new ones and lowered her with the pro-kits.

Tromatic 04-05-2014 03:34 AM

Actually learning to drive the thing stock puts you ahead of most owners.

Very well said. Learning to drive the car is great start. Doing some Auto-X or Drivers school is a "software" upgrade that carries with you with any car.

As far as HW mods, start with the basics. Tires, right off the bat. Perhaps lighter wheels if you can afford it. Lowering a car for "normal" roads creates a new set of problems if you are not aware of what is affected.

BlueDubbinTDI 04-05-2014 10:03 AM

I swapped my roof antenna before it even left the parking lot

Jegan_V 04-05-2014 10:19 AM

First change, said goodbye to the tiny exhaust tips and fitted the standard 86/GT86 ones...looks so much better as the stock USDM ones left a giant hole.

CruiseZen 04-05-2014 01:05 PM

Dropped the car off 4 days after buying it for professional paint correction and an application of Opti-Coat. If I could have afforded clear bra I would have had that done also. Protecting your car's paint should be a high priority. Other mods will be happening as the money is available.

yeah i sound like a **** on the internet but i dont mean to. my point is just that if you act too quickly, you cant know what youre doing. its like when i see people adding salt to food they havent tasted, just seems silly to go through the motions without any sort of idea what problem you are trying to solve

Damn lol I live all the way in boring pa but sounds epic and videos?? And also any idea without the e85? Cause I'm afraid of long term affects in the car with that: /

robwbright 04-05-2014 04:02 PM

Husky Winter Mats
Blitz Air Filter
Rockford Fosgate 10" Amplified Sub

Tried winter tires, but the particular Hankook tire I tried totally screwed the dry handling of the car. Went back to stock.

In the next 3-6 months, I hope to do the following:

Phantom Electric Supercharger
Open Flash Tablet/Tune
Open Flash Header

FRSNewb 04-05-2014 04:18 PM

Ordered Spec D Headlights..just awaiting their arrival in a few weeks :D

Next up:

Window tinting
Rally Armor mudflaps
Weathertech Floormats
Paint Protection/Opti-coat

someone stole your oem wheels? for real?

Nicky 04-05-2014 05:05 PM

I'm getting mine tinted at the moment, and plan to protect paint with Opticoat in the next couple weeks.!

It's pretty great gains all around. Do some searches on here. Tons of guys running it.

Vracer111 04-05-2014 11:22 PM

I believe I got rid of the intake sound generator first...either that or removed the stock tips on the exhaust.

Nefded 04-07-2014 02:29 AM

A uel header and a muffler delete were the first mod to mine. A little loud sometimes but I like it

Crazy Drew 04-07-2014 02:34 AM

I started with cosmetic mods, Greddy SP elite, Tom's tail lights and have coilovers waiting, sitting next to me as I type this. I can't help but feel as though this car was "unfinished" leaving the factory with the end user to decide how to finish it. Otherwise this would have been a $45k car.

No worries, salt on yet to be tasted food is an excellent analogy. I'm going to start with weathertech mats, paint protection, air filter and a license plate holder so I don't have to drill the grill and nose.

Next would be suspension as in a brace for the front and back, then maybe some new swaybars. I wont go nuts on it for quite a while. I need to research the autocross rules as I do want to get started doing that with this car.

Plus, learning to drive at the limit is a priority. I dont want to bolt a bunch of stuff on just because I can. I agree, that would be silly. Plus, it might foul up autocrosclassing, need to understand that.

djmm 04-07-2014 06:06 AM

I'm so far under these following order:
1.Opticoat within a week of ownership when the car paint is still shiny
2. Legal tint on windows and rear
3. Dual dash cam for security and insurance purpose

Boring I know but I try to maintain the car's original look as I think they look fine as it is (Aussie GTS which is the equivalent of monogram)
I might do door deadening down the track to make the stereo sound a bit better...

jeepmor 04-08-2014 01:08 AM

I plugged my sound generator today, like it a bit better, but do miss the growl. Easy enough to fix in two seconds. Thanks to FT86 folks for pointing out the 12V plug fits in there, like it was made for it....hmmmm. Has a bit of noticeable whine about 3-4k rpms on first impression.
