Brake Discs Rusting

So I just got my car last week and the two brake discs on the passenger side already have a nice coating of rust on them. Is this something that everyone has experienced? I thought I remember reading somewhere that the discs are really sensitive to water and they rust up very easily.

Is this something that could be replaced under warranty because it seems a bit ridiculous that I have this car for a matter of a few days and the discs already look like shit :mad0260:

Drive it... Comes right off with use. Anything left to sides a cloth and brake clean done. Hardly a warranty thing. :)

Taking in the properties of iron and steel...yes they rust.

ProjectGT86 04-01-2014 06:52 PM

ive had mine for 2 yeas and yes it will rust dont worry the dealer will tell you when to replace them which wont be anytime soon

Churg 04-01-2014 08:34 PM

Driving it somewhere dry and hitting the brakes firmly a few times should have that layer of rust come right off. Perfectly normal.

Go on the highway and brake hard 70-40 a few times. done.

As a note: don't do this during heavy traffic. It tends to cause problems.

Or so I've heard...

It leads to ongoing issues with your bumpers, and insurance premiums.

Is this the first car you've owned?

I know my question did seem probably seem kinda stupid, but it was simply my comparison between my 2000 Neon which used to be my DD and doesn't have a prominent layer of rust on the front disc brakes and this brand new car that already does within a few days of owning it. I am aware it is a fact of life that steel does rust, I just didn't expect it to happen so soon that's all

Its from sitting in a storage yard. When not moved for a few days/weeks dics will get a rust coating on them.

As above, a quick drive and some hard stops will work just fine :)

ToyoburuBRZ 04-02-2014 08:29 AM

It doesn't even need to sit for a few days or a few weeks. Just a single day of rain or a washing of your car will cause a thin layer of rust over night.

Just like everyone said... first time you drive, the rust will be gone after hitting the brakes a couple times.

the moment that iron is exposed to water and oxygen it will begin to rust

age has nothign to do with this

AdrianG 04-02-2014 09:54 AM

I don't think carbon ceramic rotors rust, maybe that's the solution.

There's a real product that prevents rust from forming during car washes. There is a very real market for this type of product, and it's desperately sad.

You need to apply this every single time you wash the car/wheels and every time it rains.

ZionsWrath 04-02-2014 10:38 AM

LMFAO

THat is for people who buy those $5000 car washes on youtube

...Why are you putting tire shine on your brakes?

he means that by the time he's down to applying the tire shine the brakes already start to rust

this will easily happen on a dry day

You certainly wouldn't want to try applying tire shine when it's raining out.

yeah, seriously

all the krazy drifters have hoses wired to spray oil on all their tires, like NOS, only for drifting!

I feel like your profile picture would have been a better choice for that.
