STUDENT DRIVER Signs

*** VOTES ARE ANONYMOUS ***

I'm thinking of getting "STUDENT DRIVER" signs for various reasons...

1] Mock the JDM Shoshinsha/Wakaba badges people have which mean the same thing.
2] These signs in English are a thing in Japan like how they rebadge "Toyota 86" to "Scion FR-S." My car with JDM parts trying to be USDM will make it even more genuinely JDM.
3] Removable/reusable so I can put them on/take them off as I please.
4] Drivers on the road will space themselves from me, creating an invisible bubble.
5] Even the best pro race drivers constantly learn to perfect their driving technique. We're all students of driving, especially in a car purpose built to teach us how to drive.

Con: Tacky - may draw unwanted attention.

Style A
$5 for a set of 4 for all sides of my car.
The most generic and genuine looking. Cheapest option.
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIyNFgxND...TI84F/$_57.JPG

Style B
$15 for a set of 3.
A bit more stylized. Only 3 pieces so front of car won't get one.
http://i11.ebayimg.com/01/i/001/07/59/0cc0_1.JPG

Style C
$7 each.
Most stylized. Font makes it look like any other car sticker if you don't read the words. I'd get 4 for all sides of my car making it the most expensive option at $28.

um okay. should be good as a conversation starter.

DC2R 03-29-2014 01:57 PM

Man this is really a good a idea. Now if only the "drivers" in Miami knew English

Wow the most retarded thing I've seen here so far. None of your reasons are valid, and it's best to leave these to people who actually have to use them.

I'd like to see your arguments against each of the 5 reasons in the OP.

Freedom of speech - welcome to America.

DoopaTroopa 03-29-2014 02:30 PM

Not gonna lie, I saw one on an old ratrod and I thought it was hilarious. I lol'd out loud. It's just another funny decal in my opinion.

CB390248 03-29-2014 02:37 PM

On a twin it won't have the same effect as it would as on a new Stingray or really any super car that makes it truly funny like in the ratrod example above. While I love my FRS too it doesn't have the same image as a super car and people will likely just think your a student driver...

headlikeahole 03-29-2014 02:42 PM

This makes me sad

husker741 03-29-2014 03:07 PM

Whenever I see student drivers, I make it a point to fuck around with them. So consider yourself FUCKED.

Precisely one reaction I'd want so drivers space themselves from me on the road. Also, I never thought higher end cars would have this so that wasn't part of my reasoning (only heard tuner cars in Japan do).

immaculate 03-29-2014 03:10 PM

If you want people to think you're a student driver just drive 10 mph under the speed limit and fail at parallel parking.

DoopaTroopa 03-29-2014 04:07 PM

Do people actually put student driver stickers on their cars when they're learning? I usually only see them on driver's education cars and they're usually crappy Corollas. If I saw one on a twin I wouldn't think you were actually learning how to drive, just trying to be funny.

If I wanted space I stay in the right lane, and if they're still riding my b-hole I just let off the gas or even brake check them. They get the message or pass eventually.

woode 03-29-2014 04:29 PM

Dumb, Ugly, Rice

are the first 3 words that come to mind. I think stickers on a car in general look stupid, but this brings it to a whole new level.

DarkestBuddha 03-29-2014 04:31 PM

are these stickers or magnets?
should be magnets,
pretty funny tho

ZOMFGAARON 03-29-2014 04:37 PM

Pretty stupid but then again so are half the stickers people put on their cars.

What sets this apart is they have the effect of drivers avoiding your car. I don't associate rice with something that creates a practical benefit unlike cookie cutter rice stickers.

I agree on the "ugly" part in that it jumps out but I plan to decorate my headrests with some yellow characters from Japan (plush hats) ;) and my car's aesthetic isn't exactly subtle.

CoupedUpSubie 03-29-2014 05:07 PM

I'd screw with any twin that is running one of these. In the exact same way I screw with kids in their civic with just a fart can on it to make a ton of noise.

I don't think this has any practicality; for a couple reasons:

1) It can have the exact opposite effect. Some people see "student driver" and want to mess with them.

2) If everyone drives around with "student driver", it detracts from the actual student drivers out there making people not give a shit about either the real ones or fake ones. Sort of like 'the boy who cried wolf'.

3) People can see in your car. There aren't too many student drivers that are in their 20s, 30s, etc.

4) Student drivers usually don't drive a brand new sports car.

If anything, I think these are worse than all the dumb stickers people put on their cars. At least those ones allow an individual to express themselves, even if the stickers are dumb/ugly to most.. these stickers just imitate something that the car/driver isn't (on top of being ugly). (Isn't that the definition of rice?)

soundman98 03-29-2014 05:25 PM

yeah, when i see a 'student driver' sticker, i change lanes harder near them, usually get closer then normal while passing them, and stop harder then normal if they get behind me..

some might call me an ass, i prefer to look at it as giving future generations defensive driving experience.

Difference is, as a former rider and safety course graduate, I possess some defensive driving sense against crazy drivers. They're an accident waiting to happen and require their license to be taken away (different problem from these signs entirely) and tend to show themselves regardless of having signs. If these signs cause them to reveal themselves more apparently, that helps me detect and avoid them better.

I don't see how my obeying the rules of the road (my job security as a civil servant relies on it) is "crying wolf." Conversely, I don't see myself "living up to the name" by attempting rookie maneuvers. I'll drive the same with or without the signs so zero-sum game. But throw in the signs variable and that only increases the chance of accidents? The gov't better outlaw these signs then!

Rice errs towards being thoughtless. This idea isn't the same as it's more thought out. And I get carded everywhere I purchase alcohol because I look younger than 21. ;)

CoupedUpSubie 03-29-2014 06:17 PM

Your car is not a drivers ed car. If you want people to stay clear of you put reflective tape on the rear bumper like the progressive or geico vehicles have. That says " I'm a safety nut and want to stand out" just as much as these stickers with a little bit less douchebag vibe.

And how is that better than...

1] Mock the JDM Shoshinsha/Wakaba badges people have which mean the same thing.

The ones I'm looking at have a reusable adhesive backing or are static cling like those oil change reminders dealers apply to the upper driver's side corner of your windshield.

Other signs are available as magnets, but those have the possibility of falling off on the road and dirt can accumulate below them.

dem00n 03-29-2014 06:41 PM

Remember kids, just because it works in Japan, doesn't mean it'll work here!

boredom.is.me 03-29-2014 06:53 PM

The most pathetic part about this is that you are trying to imitate a Japanese thing here in the US. NOBODY GIVES A SHIT about some of their stupid ricer styles which includes this.

Thousands of Americans who know the Wakaba mark might get it. Otherwise, I'll let the ignorant stay confused. People I've asked who aren't into cars but know Japanese culture (pretty much most non-car people I know in SoCal) think it's brilliant. If too many copy, I'll take them off. If nobody cares, at least they'll match some yellow interior bits I'm planning and can put them on/off at my leisure.

I used to have 16 stickers on the front, sides, and rear of my car. Now I just have 1 on my hood. Whether anyone "gives a shit" was never a factor - I do as I please.

BRZPDX 03-29-2014 07:41 PM

clearly a troll post.

woode 03-29-2014 07:51 PM

You asked for opinions. The general consensus is "no". You obviously don't care and at this point are just trying to justify these stickers to yourself.

stugray 03-29-2014 07:56 PM

This reminds me of the "Baby on board" signs...
That was a ridiculous idea.
Sure if I am about to crash into you and I see the sign I will somehow be able to avoid you and crash into someone else....

Kind of like "I'll put a sign on the back of my car to make people avoid me that can only be noticed if they are already behind me"....
Or a "Dont Taze me Bro!" T-shirt at the police convention?

ntron1 03-29-2014 07:58 PM

It is your car. You are entitled to look like a childish idiot in it if it makes you happy...

switchlanez 03-29-2014 08:32 PM

The more owners try to fit in a box of sameness, the more I want to be on the harmless and practical outside of it.

Snowblind 03-29-2014 08:37 PM

Retarded idea. I guess you need the internet's approval for doing things to your own car?

ZionsWrath 03-29-2014 08:41 PM

If I had a track car I'd put this sticker on it

I think it was meant more for first responders to identify the sign, not necessarily for you to be looking at it. Kind of like how medical alert bracelets aren't really a fashion item.

woode 03-29-2014 08:43 PM

I think we have been trolled. That is the only reasonable explanation for this.

They are these days. Google image medic alert bracelet. They're getting all sparkly.

Not looking for approval, just opinions. I've already done things to my car with which people have expressed distaste (other stickers, cheap wheels, louvers, TRD parts in a Subaru) so no need to try enlightening me on that. All the people in this thread rephrasing what I said way ahead of them in the OP: "Con: Tacky - may draw unwanted attention" aren't adding anything meaningful. As if I don't know what I already stated. I also like how they don't acknowledge all of my 5 points.

Also, http://www.r-word.org/

See, now how is that irony any different.

If I had a car with JDM parts, I'd put this American sign on it. Because everyone else is putting the Japanese new driver sign on theirs. It's a simple idea, really.
