QQQQBall's "RE"Build FR-S Thread (PIC HEAVY)

Figured I would start a thread so I could have something to look back on when it's all said and done -

I'm a true believer in "Built not Bought" and tend to take it to the extreme.

Since most of us buy a car and modify it the way we want...why not by a car that was declared "dead" by the insurance company and bring her back to life the way you want?

1) It'll be cheaper in the long run (just more time consuming)
2) You don't have to feel guilty about removing perfect OEM parts

Bad news - the car is tainted for life with the letter "R"...

My most recent rebuild was a 2007 350z Nismo #114 out of 1,608 - here are some pics of that journey (sold in 11/2012):

Side note - I'm not the guy that crashed either of these!

Hahaha OEM headlights

NorCal_Guy 03-26-2014 10:26 PM

I hope those garnishes are working out for you bud.

ericmpena 03-26-2014 11:10 PM

Don't remember what I sold, but glad I could help! Can't wait to see your progress.
As for suspension, I went with SPC LCA's because they're low priced. If you want coilovers good for DDing then I can recommend SPD Pro-Street coilovers. If you're looking for performance/tracking then I'm sure someone else can point you in the right direction.

shiro 03-27-2014 03:17 PM

That's great to hear. Hopefully the radiator treats you well.

I'm glad you make a valid point on a rebuild. I bought my car new Feb 2013 and threw a piston rod back in October 2013. Unfortunately, Toyota would not warranty the engine issues (long story short, lol). Last week I finished my car with the engine rebuild, tuning, parts, etc. and finally got her back on the road. The amount of changes I did would have been more budget "friendly" if I were to buy this car used or rebuilt a crashed one. With the growing support for this platform and the amount of damaged FRS/BRZ parts out there I'm sure this will be a very fun and rewarding project for you.

Best of luck on your build! And thanks :)

The original owner found me after I had already sold it looking to buy it back...He told me he was going 120 in the rain on bald tires, slid about 500 feet into this fence (these are his pictures)

MAPerformance 03-27-2014 05:49 PM

Dat FD tho...Good luck on the build sir!

sdemo 03-27-2014 05:50 PM

FD looks familiar. Is that "Quinn?"

qqqqball 03-27-2014 05:52 PM

that FD has an LS2 in it.... located in CT

sdemo 03-27-2014 05:57 PM

Not him then. Guy lives in the Hartford area, where I'm from.

Anyway, if the car is going to see snow, steer clear of the cheap, aluminized-steel shock body coilovers. I've had an excellent experience with RS-R Sports-i coils... and my KWs lasted multiple CT winters while I was there.

forzajuve 03-27-2014 07:40 PM

holy stupidity batman

Finally done! Decided to go with Lexus Glacier Frost Mica over Whiteout...

vividracing 10-15-2014 09:19 PM

Amazing work! Now it just needs this last set of HKS coilovers I have taking up shelf space...

qqqqball 10-15-2014 09:54 PM

Already went with Fortune Auto.. @vividracing

vividracing 10-16-2014 01:18 PM

qqqqball 10-20-2014 03:21 PM

Thanks @Extreme Dimensions! Hood fits real well...just have to cover it when it rains...

srizzors25 10-20-2014 03:48 PM

where did you order that spoiler from? Their website is in another language ha any us distributors?

qqqqball 10-20-2014 03:55 PM

@srizzors25 - I ordered it from https://www.japanparts.com/.

Be prepared to wait a month or so...I wasn't able to find any US distributors at the time (earlier this year). I would recommend looking into Lux Motion - their duckbill looks extremely similar and they're based stateside.

10Stars 10-22-2014 07:26 AM

Dang your rebuilds are sooooo goood! That Nismo Z looked awesome.

BTW what's your opinion so far on the Fortune Auto 500 coilovers? I'm planning on getting them with the Swift springs with radial bearings.

qqqqball 10-22-2014 09:04 AM

Thanks 10Stars! Love the coilovers, the radial bearings prevent the popping noise you often hear with coilovers. I wouldn't spend the money on the Swift springs unless you will be tracking the car every weekend. The car is so light and tight as it is, upgraded spring rates aren't really necessary.

10Stars 10-25-2014 09:24 AM

Hmmm you think so? I don't plan on tracking my car but I do plan on some spirited driving. You may be right though maybe I should just opt out of the Swift springs.

Anyways those Brembos came out great!
