Looks like I'm out [FT86 plates now for sale too]
Hi all,
Good chance this will be one of the last times I make a thread in here; I've decided not to go ahead with the 86, at least for the foreseeable future. No one particular reason, just the more I think about it, the less it seems like a decent idea. Even though I'm only 25 I'm a bit of a family man now (2 big dogs plus one of those baby things) so the practicality was always against it, especially since I do have to drop my daughter to daycare 4 days a week. No doubt the missus will want another kiddiewink sooner or later too... getting a newborn out of a 2+2 for months just doesn't seem like a fun time. I'm also a bit pissed off with Toyota Australia. The complete lack of information, even being able to tell us when we'll know something, really shows how out of touch they are especially given the buzz around this vehicle (some of which they've driven). Add to that every salesperson in every dealership I've talked to has pretty much been a wanker with either no product knowledge, or, have just blatantly lied to me about competitors. Even though we don't know RRP yet, I'm in firm belief that it's going to be really pushing my budget. Not a big deal but considering that the practicality and my faith with the manufacturer has been shaken, this particular point has come into my decision. They won't throw in any freebies at all while there's a waiting list, and they'll charge full RRP... which is disappointing for me because things like an extended warranty (to cover life of the finance) are pretty much mandatory. Given that most dealerships seem to have an allocation between 2-5 a month, I can't see them having dealer stock until 2013 at least. I do still have an unfinished AE86 project sitting in my shed too. I've dropped about 25k into it and a lot of hours, but haven't had any enjoyment from it yet. I figure that if I do really want to go fast I should get this on the road... I don't need 2 sports cars hanging around the house. Maybe I'm just in a pessimistic state of mind... I don't know. But I've had enough. Bit disappointing to come to this conclusion after 3+ years but hey, it happens. As per the subject I'll now be selling my Queensland personalised plates "FT86", too. If anyone's interested let me know by reply or PM. Haven't decided on a price yet, will figure that out tonight. Best luck for all who are going to stick with it. I really hope you all have a great time with the car, honestly. Hopefully one day, when my situation improves, I'll join you. - Andy |
Damn. Sorry to hear it Andy. I have a few of my mates that have been waiting for this car (86 and BRZ) pull out and buy something else due to lack of tangible information from the dealers :(
Best of luck and I hope you finish that ae86 soon :) Tony |
I'm also getting pissy waiting for it. Thinking of getting a second hand WRX for about $25k-30k. I really want to wait and drive it first though.

Sorry to hear it Andy.
I am very interested in your AE86 project, as ae86 is my favourite car ever. period. I had JDM import and wish I still had it. Pics and specs?? |
I'm with you pugs, I can't even get any insider info anymore and that's real tight, my main reason is total lack of available info, 99% of info is on this site with next too nothing coming officially from Toyota.
I know is not long to go now but doing a pre order just to get info thats almost non existing is rather rude. No point signing up for updates because they just flog Camry info. |
In regards to more info, apart from price, what is left to find out?
I am pretty sure most of us know basically everything there is to know anyway. |
Nafe do you even know what our model looks like, trim levels/colours(interior), as i say 99% of info we assume from other countries models which in general is a fair assumption but we got reamed before?
Unless i missed it but where is our production model? What type Audio Any trims added, scuff plates etc Options/upgrades? All we know at best is that our GT could be like the G in Japan and the GTS like the GT in Japan. Apparently we get the leather knob and steering wheel, what does that look like? What does the Oz production model look like and what are our options, what do they look like, these are the things i need to know before i part with 1 red penny. I guess well know soon enough. |
Yep, just hanging out for price now. Oh, and what JFC just said. That stuff too :D
|
Look each to their own and maybe im just too hasty but im sick of waiting as many would be.
Hopefully ol mate can shed some more light on 4th June. |

I can get a faster and more practical WRX for less. I just love the ideas behind this car though. |
Devie – yes, price is pretty important.. please show me where I said a) that it isn’t or b) that we don’t need to know/already know?? I said “other than price”.. Pretty clear indication that I realise we are all still waiting....
With regards to trim levels and stuff, I see no need to make a big deal of it like you have JFC. We know what the steering wheel and gearknob will look like, we know what the rims look like, we know what the aero looks like, we know to a fair degree what is included in the high spec model and what is/isn’t in the low spec model. Sure we haven’t upgrades/options confirmed yet, but we can use our brains a little work out the usual straight forward stuff. Floor mats, headlight protectors, scuff plates, etc will be available. The only thing I am not too happy about is not knowing pricing, and even that isn’t the end of the world. The other stuff doesn’t worry me because, for the most part, cosmetic “upgrades” don’t bother me. Not shit like scuff plates, etc. Each to their own. I don’t *need* this car, i want it. So because it isn’t a necessity, I am not too fussed about little things. |

Hopefully the pic of the GTS auto interior is attached to this post

Yeah but nafe, alot of people need a car at the moment and were/are holding out for this one. I know for a fact a few people that committed to something else due to not knowing the price of this, as they or their partner said enough wait, time to move on to something that is known and can be had now
|
i guess i am lucky that i don't need to change until next year. so i have more options available.
but i'm really sick of this robotic replies on FB: Toyota Australia Hi all, we can't confirm the specifications of the vehicle until early June, however we'll be sure to let you know as soon as they are available. For more, follow our 86 Days to Go Twitter countdown here: https://twitter.com/#!/Toyota_Aus. Thanks. i so wish FB has a dislike button as well!! |
Don't sweat it OP, we had our pre-order down since last nov/dec and we just bailed on it...
Its far from the end of the world and to be honest I'll just reserve my judgement on the car till I drive one, although I tend to feel we are just going to add another Euro to the garage in due time. Plus you have an OG AE86... I've got an epic soft spot for those, thats a car that has aged so gracefully :) |

Offtopic: Very nice, did you get a pic of that from the Port of Brisbane? If so didn't realise they had red/orange ones around :O (confused on the colour since i kind of see red and orange lol) Hoping it's red now though lol @PuGZoR a shame things not working out and yes with toyota ****ing us all around. But at least you got the original AE86 :D |
It seems like neither Toyota nor Subaru are advertising this car properly. There is no buzz being created. I personally haven't seen any commercials and 90% of the people I work with don't know about the twins. I'm assuming that the cars are supposed to arrive next month. If that's the case, this is pathetic lol. I e-mail the Subaru dealership once every month for an update and I get the same answer. We have no information, check back next month......:mad0259:

I decided a while back to no longer get an 86... everything has gone down hill since the initial concept and the lack of communication from toyota aus is downright shameful. It's supposed to launch on 8th June (3 weeks from now) and even though pre-orders have arrived at docks there is still no official pricing while every other part of the world had their pricing released already. They are obviously holding back to screw over the aus market like they always do. Expect 40k+ for a ORC basic model, so much for an affordable "sports" car (apart from the handling I wouldn't call it a sports car as sold from the factory).
Save yourself some money and get a second hand subaru wrx for $25k-$30k like I did. I know I'm gonna get flak for posting this but I don't care. I was a fan of the 86 at one point but everything since the announcement has just got worse... despite what their marketing will try to sell you, toyota is a very different company from their 90s era and are only interested in the bottom line selling crap to the masses, not about satisfying driver enthusiasts. Hopefully the 86 encourages nissan to reignite their afforable sports car range so they can show toyota how it is really done. |
No need to appologise. More and more ozzies are feeling like this
And when some articles said that most of the cars are plesold, that is to say they are preordered with deposits (refundable, yeah), that really means sweet fuck all, because everything is subject to change, including people's interests, and follow through ;) I am pissed off that it is month pre launch, cars are here, everything is sorted, but no ads, no info, nothing.. |
I also have/am looking elsewhere. Sick of waiting with absolutely no teasers or incentives to stay, i mearly come back here hoping more info is avail but nothing really exciting. Hopefully for those waiting that july 4th thing brings fruits for your pains.
Each their own, but im out aswell. Found a real nice clean R32GTR that ticks my boxes atm. Toyota just ticks me off. |
All Im gonna say is the price better be bloody good...
|
I have been reading responses and even tried to reply the other day, but net stuffed up and the post didn't go through.
Good to see I'm not the only one feeling like this; actually surprising to see a few of the other regulars in the same boat. Kind of ironic that we were probably the biggest fans and the easiest to impress, yet because they handled us so badly we're now going to be detractors to their brand. Really makes you wonder if the AU lot are on the same page as Toyota Japan. Akio Toyoda seems adamant on bringing passion back to cars and inspiring the younger generation, yet Toyota Australia are just doing the same crap they've done for the past 2 decades. |
i STILL have faith that toyota au will come throu for us.. but that is dwindling by the minute. i mean they were handed a car, a fucking great car, that more or less sells it self, they had to do NOTHING with respect to development of it (afaik) and all they need to do is a few little pieces of info here and there.. but noo, ooooh no, what do we get? a pointless email that has less info than this forum did 3 months ago...
all we are really asking for is the price.. i dont understand why its such a hidden aspect? i mean, the price is set already, ofcourse, but if its too high, all that is going to happen is people going in to shock and refusing to pay for it initially. its going to be under 37 or whatever the vw was.. but that doesnt say much now does it.. |
Maybe... They are fuelling the speculation and letting us all get riled up so they can release a super low price and in our collective amazement, we will all buy the car. :) man can dream, right?

Hi All,
First post from me, I have been following the 86 for about a year now. Not as long as most on this site however still seems rather a long time. I have just came from my Toyota dealer, very dissapointed with what they have told me. Their estimate for the cost of the car was 40k for the base model and 46k for the premium. I was really hoping for the 35K mark. Infact there are bran new WRX's for 42k, not saying the WRX is a brilliant peice of engineering like the reports of the 86, however I believe the cost to produce a WRX (meaning value for your money) is far beyond that of the 86. I think Toyota Australia has added a huge cost inflation due to the popularity of the 86. Basically my belief is that unless you really intend on taking advantage of what makes the 86 great you will not recieve value for your money. |

There is a article that says ( although I don't know how officially) that the price will be less than a VW Golf GTi here in oz, so your dealer is more than likely talking out of their arse :p
|
If you guys are pulling out then I can likely get mine sooner. Win :P
Good luck with the WRX's and GTR's though :) Not everyone wants what those cars offer. SO we will wait and be happy with the 86 whioel you guys are happy with your AWD turbos. |
