Buying FR-S. Quick Questions.
Hello.
Im thinking of buying Scion FR-S in May/June and i have few questions for you guys. Im just literally in love with this car ^^ and wanted to ask you what should know when buying used but certified FR-S. I watched thousands of videos, diy, sites, infos about FR-S and for me this car is perfect.:) And if you guys could tell me how's the car is working for you cos i didn't had a chance to test drive it yet but going to do it soon and if there are any common problems with the car? Found few scions with the price 20-25k and less than 10k miles and ofc manual transmision so this is kinda good price for my budget. Thanks. :burnrubber: |

There's a sub-forum for "issues."
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=72 I've only had a problem with my windows in subzero temperatures not wanting to open and close properly, and it only lasted for a little while. The car works well for me, but it's a bit rough with potholes and rough roads in general, but it's a sports car, and I expected these things. |
Im running 13 BRZ w/ AT trans and im very pleased. Everything has worked great for me for 17,000 miles and 1 1/2 years. What kind of issues , if any are you expecting to run into?
|
Ask about the previous owners age. If there are any stupid cosmetic mods or a fart-can, be leery of the car. A low-mileage used FR-S/BRZ was either owned by a flat-billed asshat who abused it and then got it repo'd, decided it was too slow despite running at redline from day one, or someone who babied it. No in-between.

You'll most likely have the chirping issue
If you get a 2012 manufactured frs, make sure that the rear cam plate is not leaking and already been sealed Minor issue is that the welds on the rear deck might start ticking at little bumps but there is a quick diy for that. Make sure that the PDI was done properly too That's all I can think of at the moment Truly this car is a blast to drive even with those small issues Good luck Sent from my SM-N900W8 using Tapatalk |

Ok so what should i check when buying used FR-S? I'd never bought a car from a dealer before. Im 20 and 2 years ago i bought my first car but it was from private seller and 1995 Honda Accord with 100k miles on it so its a big difference.

I would never buy an FRS/BRZ used.... especially with how people drive these cars LOL

"Baby" may have not been the right word, but "retard" surely is. |

I'd at least want a car with a service record. And insist on a solid warranty. We are just now getting to the point where things on a "normally" driven car are going to fail. |
I would pay a little more for a brand new one. You can probably still get an '13 for relatively cheap.
|
Honestly its a sports car odds are the owner has did a bit of "sprited" driving and higher than normal chance it has been autocrossed or tracked (as compared to a not sports car).
I'd say assume the previous owner drove it hard and just look for maintenance receipts, not that there is much maintenance in the first 10k. if they did 2 oil changes, trans, and diff you can guess they probably cared about the car. |
Why buy used?... The rates are higher than a brand new (if finance) and you can get brand new for 25K unless FRS's are limited in ur area. Answer to ur Q?: You "literally love" the car! LOL... go get it!

THIS. If your budget is 25K before taxes .... get a new one. This is one car I probably wouldn't buy used .... because I KNOW HOW I DROVE mine. This car was meant to be driven .... not babied. That said ... I've had mine for a year and a half .... 19 thousands miles and NO ISSUES at all. If anything .... the suspension seems to be getting tighter. Not sure why. But I like it.;) |

On the money side of things, you should check into getting financing through a credit union. Also check your dmv for other fees. You should have all your money worked out before you even walk into the dealer. It'll give you a good upper hand when negotiating financing.

A new FRS may be a better idea. I just bought mine a week ago and got a great rate on it. These cars were made to be driven hard and it sucks inheriting other people's problems. Good luck :)

Honestly i didn't know i can get new FR-S for 23-25k, thats awesome for me. Before i will get that car i need to put a little down payment and check the insurance cos im 20 so its gonna be much higher than my accord but for now i didnt get any tickets, accidents and even red lights.

I would agree with many of those up above, I would stay away from a used FR-S/BRZ unless you know the former owner. I'd suggest you save up some more money and buy a new, last years model. humfrz |
Thank you i think that would be the best idea to save a little more and buy new not used :)

i was in the same boat a couple wks ago, decided to go new when i discovered new 2013's were sitting on lots and priced at 23,800. i'd check carsoup.com to see what prices really are (the cheaper one's listed are a few hundred miles from you) and just email the dealer to see what kind of price you can get. carguru's is also showing several near chicago under 24k (appears they have the ultramarine in a m/t).
|
my biggest issue with this car is trying to drive it with a massive erection, which is every time i get in the drivers seat.
