Keep Auto Transmission or Switch to Manual

I am currently debating..whether I should switch it, because If I do, it would cost me quite a lot of money to trade in the Auto FR-S and get a brand new manual Subaru BRZ. So yeah...what is your guys opinion?

Captain Snooze 03-19-2014 06:40 AM

The very fact that you say "cost me quite a lot" gives me the impression that it would be a bad financial decision for you.

Btw, who is my guy?

Stayreal 03-19-2014 06:44 AM

Lol "your guys opinion" I am just referring to the general everyone who could help me make my decision. Financial wise is okay, but I just want to see if it is a good choice or not.

midnight23 03-19-2014 07:11 AM

why did you get auto in the first place?

Stayreal 03-19-2014 07:40 AM

Let's just say that I was too impatient to get a manual at the moment and bought the auto without thinking I might regret it later on...

midnight23 03-19-2014 07:54 AM

what are you going to do with this car? do you like driving stick? are you planning to keep this car for more than a couple years?

Eurasianman 03-19-2014 09:23 AM

I would honestly just hang on to it until they refresh the line. Might get a better bang for back :iono:

Blood 03-19-2014 09:31 AM

Is having a clutch pedal worth losing "quite a lot of money"? If you can answer "Yes" to that question without hesitation, then I'd say you should trade it in to buy a manual.

Otherwise, I'd just keep the auto. You can still shift through the gears with the auto by using M mode, you just don't have to press a pedal to do so.

Mikem53 03-19-2014 10:01 AM

Go for it.. If it will make you enjoy the car more..
It's only money.. Just go out and make some more... No harm done..
If it will make you appreciate the car better and enjoy it more, then I say go for it.

^ This guy

While true, it is only money, still probably not the best financial decision. Just my $0.02.

feldy 03-19-2014 10:15 AM

Why don't you just put that money into making your auto better. There's drive shaft upgrades, trans upgrades and so on. And don't forget tuning ect. Keep the auto.

Better won't make it a manual or give you the same interaction with the car..

industrial 03-19-2014 10:21 AM

Find someone to trade cars with. There has to be someone that's sick of shifting through 4 hours of traffic a day in socal.

ZionsWrath 03-19-2014 10:26 AM

What don't you like about the auto? I have an MT and while I wouldn't trade for an auto, I'm not really enamored with it like some of this people that love to proclaim "SPORTS CAR NEED MT #!@%&%@"

I wouldn't have mind an auto but I have plans for FI at some point and also didn't want to spend the extra on it.

Unless you really hate it for some reason, I would keep it and :burnrubber:

Patience is a virtue, my friend. You should have just waited for the transmission you preferred to come along. Or found a dealer that was willing to get the actual car you wanted.

Settling for less than you want will never make you happy. Take a look at your finances, if you can afford the trade, you may as well. If not, learn from your mistake and don't repeat it.

In the meantime, take a few twisties in the car and enjoy it :)

IAmNotTheDriftKing 03-19-2014 11:48 AM

Why not buy a used manual Toyobaru, that way you can save some money!

If this won't hurt you financially, why not? Just make sure you want a manual, cause some people hate it in traffic and such(it isn't bad to be honest).

You can always consider this: SU003-04329 TRANS ASSY/TL7 $6284.78

Straight out of my parts tool at work for a new manual transmission. Doesn't include pedals, clutch, MC, ECM, etc. That's just a new MT gearbox by itself.

dbrandt01 03-19-2014 01:34 PM

I mean, if I was in your position I'd say it's not worth it, because of the financial comment you made. Sometimes I wish I had an automatic. This was my first manual, but once I learned how to drive it, I couldn't see driving an automatic. I second the guys comment above about trying to trade in for a manual. It may not be as bad of a loss on your end. Nothing wrong with used cars if they were taken care of.

dirtymax 03-19-2014 01:45 PM

the grass is always greener on the other side. I wouldnt mind trying the auto on a curvy road some time. These autos have paddle shifters right?

Yup, they do have paddle shifters

TwinturboCamry 03-19-2014 04:22 PM

Dude, you're asking a bunch of random strangers and teenagers to make financial decision for you. Are you srs? What are you, 12?

Churg 03-19-2014 04:42 PM

I just traded in my WRB Limited Auto 2013 BRZ for a WRB Limited Manual 2014 BRZ, and I couldn't be happier. I drive 130 miles a day through SoCal, shifting isn't terrible at all, and this is my first manual.

Sure, I did lose out on some money, but I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I feel like I'm one with my car more than I was with the Auto. Then again, I'm doing stuff like AutoX every chance I get, and more aftermarket parts and customizations can be had with a Manual, especially looking at the FI options out there.

I'd do it again no questions asked. Sure, you may lose out on some money, I sure as hell did, but my driving experience with this car has improved so much. Driving sure isn't boring anymore! Just my $.02.

DAN_BRZ 03-19-2014 04:48 PM

ever thought about changing out the final drive? you can swap it out, so the car acts and shifts more like a manual??? i would consider that first before trading in your car. a 4.88FD would drastically change the way ur car shifts, gears 1-2-3 would be pretty bang on to a 6spd.

Krispeee 03-19-2014 04:49 PM

Do it if you feel if it's worth it...and do it soon before the car depreciates even more.

I totally agree with this sentiment. I posted something along these lines then deleted it. I thought it was too inflammatory but seeing TwinturboCamry's post made me wish I had kept it in.

Sonolin 03-19-2014 08:46 PM

Go with the car you'll enjoy driving every day, and that you'll stick with for the rest of your life.

Had an auto, traded for manual, no regrets whatsoever :w00t:

Even in LA traffic. Calms me down sometimes to work a clutch pedal :iono:

Gixxersixxerman 03-19-2014 08:53 PM

Having the auto, and driven both, if I rewind time and was sitting in front of the dealership again with the option to get the auto or the manual.. I'd still be driving a auto.. Only three times did I wish I had a manual, all three times were out acting a fool drifting around.. The one with the car crap is just that.. Crap.. I've spent more time in the auto of course, but spent a lot in the manual.. Only difference is one requires my left foot the other doesn't, the cars feel the same, driving is the same, at the track I'm less then a second off randy pobst so the auto doesn't hold me back.. I'm happy with my car..

That said, if your mind is set on the manual, or if you regret the auto, then you should trade, take the loss because in the end you'll be more happy with your purchase.. Or drive it until the next model comes out

Boofneenee 03-19-2014 11:03 PM

if you have the money then do it. Driving a car like the GT86 without a stick just loses some of the glamour and character IMO.

I am actually debating if I should trade mine in for a 2014 WRX ... .. is that wrong? lawls

car_roll 03-19-2014 11:38 PM

Drove an slk 55 for about a month prior to acquiring the brz. It was pretty similar to the twins, except it had more power and had paddle shifters. The power was nice, and it turned in quite nicely. Something about manual makes the car a lot more "fun", however, If i already bought the auto, I can't see myself spending an extra couple thousand for a manual. If you can get someone to trade you go for it, otherwise work with what you got. Get some power mods, some nice suspension and tires and enjoy it.

Sithspawn 03-21-2014 01:23 AM

Well, I had a manual FR-S at first, drove nothing but manual cars for 15 years, got an auto FR-S instead and never looked back. I love my auto and once I added paddle shifter extensions, it is very enjoyable to drive since I pretty much keep it in manual mode 95% of the time. Now, instead of doing the chicken dance to down shift and accelerate, two clicks and I'm gone. Throw it in Drive, Sport for the canyons and you can focus entirely on balancing the car on the edge while the computer executes flawless up and downshifts every time with telepathic precision. In fact, I feel more connected to the automatic version of the FR-S than I did to the manual since my mind is freed up to feel the chassis, suspension, and tires communicate what is going on.

mid_life_crisis 03-21-2014 10:01 AM

Near as I can tell the only place where the manual has a real performance advantage is off the line and how much of your time is spent there?

Exactly. Unless you plan on dumping the clutch frequently (which is just plain silly), what's the point? Keep the Auto. Like others said, it's a blast on the back roads in sport mode. The car is always poised and always in the power band.

DaJo 03-21-2014 04:55 PM

Lol better ask your wife, mom, or whoever your other significant other is... Asking us to decide for you is stupid in the first place.

The idea of trading a brand new car in because of tranny is stupid. You've made a choice, suck it up Buttercup; or trade it in and don't complain about the financial loss.

I have my 6AT for almost 2 years now, and at times (I'll be honest) I do miss my stickshifter, but I do not regret making this decision.

skye67 03-22-2014 03:49 PM

Having owned both a manual and auto BRZ. I prefer the auto in sport mode. I drive 500 to a 1000 miles a week. On my phone all most all the time. Fighting traffic all the time. The manual can be a hassle. Only thing I miss is letting the clutch out hard and chirping the tires sometimes.

fa5tco 03-22-2014 08:21 PM

I have a manual. If you lived local id consider seeing if they could be swapped

Totality 03-23-2014 01:12 AM

Totally agree with Sithspawn. In Taiwan we did not have choice as only autos are imported. I was upset we did not have a choice and was prepared to swap out the trans...but I love the auto. I keep it in manual 99% time. I love the clean crisp shifts it makes. Only draw backs I see are the bigger gear spacing but a final drive upgrade solves that. On the track the tranny will over heat so you need to beef up cooling. If you want to drift get a manual otherwise auto is awesome.
