3000 Mile oil change...

Tried to make appointment for 3000 mile oil change, and the dealer is saying don't need until 5000 miles. Don't have my book in front of me, but swear it said 3000 checkup and change. My wife had us buy every warranty under the sun they offered and want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

When did everyone else do their first service?

I got it done at 2900 miles. It was free.

mjh712 03-11-2014 11:09 AM

It's supposed to be 3000 & 7500 miles. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8374 Click the Link to the Maintenance Manual

Though you will find differing opinions, especially when it comes to the use of the car. (DD, Autocross, Track, etc)

BlueDubbinTDI 03-11-2014 11:23 AM

Got my free 7500 done at 3700 no problem

Dorb 03-11-2014 01:35 PM

Thanks guys. I believe I will just go ahead and get it now as I'm at 2975. Guess it could never hurt. After 16 months of ownership, I'm more worried length of time between changes instead of miles. But guess may not be a problem with the synthetic oil.

503 BRZ 03-11-2014 01:43 PM

Spoke with the guy at Subaru who I bought it from and he said Subaru now says the first oil change should be done at 7,500. He however disagreed with it and said that he and the people in the shop still recommend the first at 3-3.5k then the second one at 7.5k and then every 7.5k after.

Coolhand 03-11-2014 03:39 PM

I am doing mine at 3000, dealer set up the appointment for this Friday.

JS + BRZ 03-11-2014 03:56 PM

I called and said I really want to get my first oil change done at 1500 miles.

They did it. Free, of course.

Pacific Subaru.

It's 3750 miles. Usually the dealership will put a sticker on your upper left edge of the driver's side of the front windshield that will tell you at what mileage or what month to bring the car in for its next service appointment.

After 16 months of ownership, you haven't changed the oil? I'd definitely change it then - it's not just based on mileage, it also is based on time.

XanRules 03-11-2014 04:14 PM

Will probably do my first at 3750, then 7500 and every 7500 after that.

I did one at 1K due to all the talk about new engines in other threads.(seems like 1/2 the people thing its good and the other 1/2 say not needed) But wanted to make sure the 3K covers all the warranty crap my wife went with. Just don't want any loop holes over the next 7 years.;)

Kostamojen 03-11-2014 04:54 PM

My first was at 1500 due to a long trip picking up the car.

Second was last month at just under 5000 miles. I'm probably going to do once a year or ~6000 miles.

extrashaky 03-11-2014 09:10 PM

My owner's manual says the first change should be at 7500, but the dealer sent me a different maintenance schedule that had the first change at 2700, the second at 7500 and then every 7500 thereafter. The dealer's schedule makes more sense. You really want to make that first change early to get rid of the inevitable crap in the oil that shaves off during break-in.

If I'm not mistaken, synthetic oil is supposed to be changed every 12 months if the car is not driven the recommended number of miles. It lasts a lot longer than conventional oil, but it doesn't last indefinitely.

BRZnut 03-11-2014 09:49 PM

Even though it's synthetic & could go for year, the manual states every 7,500 miles or 7.5 months, which ever comes first.

My dealer also strongly suggested the first change occur at 3K miles, which is not what the manual suggest.

SirBrass 03-11-2014 10:01 PM

Manual suggests 3750 miles for first change. So, 3k isn't far off.

On phone I am. Therefore, if mistakes I make, Frank Oz blame you should.

DC2R 03-11-2014 10:44 PM

Just got mine done today. 1832 miles. Dealer told me I needed to wait until 7500. I said I'd blow 1 ToyoGuard Elite oil change if needed. Paperwork looks like they put it under the standard 7500 change.
My question is: well they honor next oil change in 7500 miles(around 9000 miles on odometer) or will they make me wait until 15000 miles marker?

Just logged into MySubaru, Under notifications it says, "Upcoming Service:3,000 mile Service"

I'm getting the feeling Subaru really does not have a clue what they want you to do with the oil change which is really sad. First time new car buyer and guess I'm taking this warranty crap way to serious. Guess I will have a good talk with them face to face Saturday when the car goes in for service.

JS + BRZ 03-12-2014 06:52 PM

Your dealer is just dumb. That's all.

DC2R 03-12-2014 07:53 PM

Service coordinator guy was also trying to talk me into boosting it

What dealer are you using Wagner Subaru?

JL_FRS 03-13-2014 09:40 AM

My scheduled oil change is at 5000 miles which was dated for May. Emailed the service tech to double check and he was adament 5000 miles is recommended for my 2014 FRS. Should I call and insist on getting it changed at 3750 miles instead?

Prog 03-13-2014 10:46 AM

The manual says 7,500. My dealer said like 5,000 or something, I honestly forgot and don't really care what they say. I'm getting my first one in a little while and I think I have close to 6,000.

Yes. Just tell them you want it earlier.

I called my dealer and they did it at 1500miles. No problem.

After researching and looking through the 1st oil change oil analyses posted here I decided to run mine out to 7500 miles. The fill oil is specially formulated to be ran for the entirety of your first 7500 miles to help continue break in and every oil analysis I've seen has indicated the oil at this interval is still perfectly good. Prematurely changing out the fill oil will remove the extra additives that are intended to be ran for the first 7500 miles.

If anything I'd suggest you just change out the filter, and of course do some research of your own.

Where did you confirm special additives in first fill?

This is a good start but far from all the research I've done.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11711

Go search around for oil analyses on fill oil.

DC2R 03-13-2014 05:53 PM

Hmmm. Good info. Now I'm starting to regret oil change at 1800 miles. They just called me to let me know my fuel pump came in. Maybe I'll tell them to throw the old stuff back in ;)

JS + BRZ 03-13-2014 07:47 PM

It definitely has some sort of break in additives. I wouldn't have changed it so soon if I didn't track the car twice before hitting 1500miles. Haha

Most Toyota's use a 5K routine oil change, so Toyota dealerships will generally suggest a 5k change because that's what they are used to. Subaru said the car only needs a 7.5k change, so some dealers are actually passing that info to the service techs and they are acting accordingly. Frankly, with most modern oils, 3k is a waste of money on all but a dedicated track/autoX car, your engine isn't shedding metals enough to need a new filter every 3k (unless you've got massive problems) and the oils don't start breaking down until closer to 10-15k or even longer. Obviously, oil is also a time-change item if you don't put a lot of miles on the car due to moisture absorption (water in oil=bad times).

At least that's what I've learned from the toyota/subaru dealer network here, and some mechanics and engineers I trust to know their stuff.

Subaru of Dayton.
Bought the car at Gerald Subaru in Naperville Il as it was the only place I could find a WRB BRZ back in Nov 2012.

This reminds me, the chick I made my appointment with, I had told her I want to buy the update for the GPS / radio, she said there wasn't one for the BRZ. I asked if she was sure, she said she would double check and call back and let me know. Guess what. Looks like I better make a follow up call.

Maybe I should transfer over to Wagner.

Believe me, I don't want to change the oil, just don't want any loop holes in all the extended warranty crap my wife tossed on for the next 7 years.

teamturbo 03-15-2014 09:58 PM

I need to schedule my first oil change... car was purchased June 2013, it's got 7,000 miles flat on it. It's been bothering me because I feel I'm somewhat negligent, but I've been busy.

Gilluspe 03-17-2014 05:46 PM

I'm doing my suggested 7.5 month first change tomorrow because i've only put 1500 miles on it. when i called the dealer to schedule the appointment they insisted that 7500 miles is hyundai not toyota lol. not sure why a toyota dealership knows the Hyundai schedule. She was confused when i told her the manual said 7500, so i just said it was because it was a scion. and she just said "oh okay". w/e she was just a secretary.

This toyota dealer doesn't have scion but I'm not going to the dealer i bought it from because they screwed it up on pre-departure and had to repaint half the car... let me tell you, they did NOT make money on me haha.

SpeedyJay 03-17-2014 11:20 PM

I did my first oil change at 3000km but I chose to do a 'hard break in' and I did my first AutoX at 1000km, so I thought it was time. I raced a buddy of mine in his FRS (both cars with a catback) and was able to noticeably pull on him so I'm quite happy with my break in. Of course it could be more driver then car I guess..

I personally haven't used them yet being new to Dayton, but I read some good things about them on other forums like nasioc. I'll probably take it there if need be. But I plan to do the majority of maintenance myself. People working on my Nissan here literally screwed up more than the fixed.

Dorb 03-19-2014 07:28 AM

Wagner was nice they just seemed a little to laid back for me. When I was pricing the rear spoiler for mine the guy had his feet up on the desk when I walked in and seemed to not really be into the job or have a clue as about what I was asking. Plus their lot has tons of potholes and way too small and crowded. Not sure how they even move cars around. First impression is everything.(I have heard they are expanding or moving, which may help, two people from work here bough from them last year)
I actually ended up having a good time at Subaru Dayton, They gave me a print out of the official sheet Subaru uses on the BRZ for what needs to be done and when. They were all super nice. No regrets now.

FRS_FIEND 03-22-2014 07:02 AM

i used my first free change at 1000 mi. and the dealer was like you dont need to get one till you hit 7500mi. and they were being smart asses like i was another dumbass customer. then i said YEAH but i want it done now full synthetic oil or not i have a preference when i want my oil changes. also i get 3 oil changes at your 7.5k increments whats it matter if i do them sooner. Moral of the story, its your car and your preference dont let the dealer tell you no. cant wait to finishes my oil changes i get free from them. ive never liked other people working on my car. i dont trust them

paiceyfan 03-23-2014 07:44 PM

So, are the free oil changes dependent on dealer or is this mandated by Subaru?

I heard it's only for CA dealers. Not sure though.
