SCCA Socal Solo 2 at El Toro, Socal, 3/22-23, noob questions

Hey Socal autox guys. I'm planning on registering for this Pro Solo event at El Toro, first time at autox.
My car is stock besides a drop in and axleback, and I'm doing this purely for fun. I'm trying to decide whether to do only the practice day on Saturday or both days.

My question is, what class should I register in, and what tips do you have for an autox noob..especially you guys who have autox'd at El Toro before.

Also who here is going??

well this event is not the pro solo, which is 4/12 & 4/13

you would be classed in STX just because of your springs. you can either run in that class or CST. This is a class is basically a free for all as long as you run on street tires.

tips for el toro...
well it is a higher grip surface so expect a bit more of tire wear compared to driving on the street.
there are plenty of veterans who would be more then happy to show you the ropes. don't be shy to ask for a ride to see where the course goes. (this only applies for practice typically)

JB86'd 03-10-2014 10:25 PM

@itzmik3 sorry I meant drop in filter..i don't have springs

then i would say S2 C-street would be the best place to compete in

Alright thanks a lot!

Anybody going to this event? I'd like to get some insight and also not be a loner all day :help:

simpleisbest 03-11-2014 02:53 PM

There will be a couple of us out there! If you want to run Sunday regional events regularly, I would recommend starting out in the Novice class (NOV). Then select your PAX for C-Street. Its a great way to meet other novices and get introduced to the sport! You will still run with your car's prep class (S2, in this case), so you can get tips from other drivers on car set-up, driving, etc...

Churg 03-11-2014 03:16 PM

I have to do STX because of my 9" RPF1's, but this will be my third event ever, so I've been running in Novice, and will for the whole season. I'd definitely recommend taking a ride with some other BRZ/FRS/RWD cars, you'll learn a lot. If you get into the practice, maybe try doing a few runs, then have someone else drive your car, and have them ride with you after you watch them once. You'll learn a lot having someone else drive your car that knows what they're doing.
I was fortunate enough to get a veteran to drive my car, then ride with me and coach me as I was driving, it blew my mind.

cactus 03-11-2014 03:32 PM

I'll be in the Southbay for the weekend and am going to try to make it out Sunday. Any regulars know about what time CS or NS-CS runs?

simpleisbest 03-11-2014 03:40 PM

Run/Work order isnt posted yet, should be up next week!

JB86'd 03-11-2014 06:59 PM

@Churg @simpleisbest I've decided to run only on Sunday in Novice, S2, C-Street. I've been reading up a lot, read some SCCA information regarding classes and rules, along with the CSCC regulations and the CSCC novice guide. It's all a little overwhelming and I'm still figuring it out but I'm sure once I get there I'll catch on quick. I'd love to ride with someone who's driving a twin, and I'll also be having an instructor ride with me for my first run.

I'm running all stock so I'm sure I'll be super slow but I'm really excited, especially since El Toro is 15 minutes away from my house.

Very nice! Kudos to you for doing your homework and reading the rules!
You can come find us with the white FR-S (w/black wheels, single exit exhaust) running in S2/CS!

Woot! I'm excited for you! If El Toro is so close, you should at least come by sometime on Saturday just to get some rides. I don't know how often you'll be able to ride with someone driving one of the twins on Sunday. But I'm still new, so who knows!

I'm in the stock WRB BRZ with gold RPF1's. If you want a ride, I'm definitely down to take you for a spin! I placed 2nd in Novice last event, but @simpleisbest and @itzmik3 are both beasts. Blow me out of the water! I had an exhaust and everything else, but I recently swapped back to stock and traded in my 2013 A/T BRZ for a 2014 Manual, so there won't be any goodies on the car except for the wheels

That's actually a great idea that I hadn't considered. That should give me a good idea of what will be expected on Sunday and what I'm up against :) I'll definitely look for you on Saturday..I'll probably make it there around 10 im guessing.

Congrats on trading to a manual. They can be tedious in traffic but man are they a blast.

Also a question for you guys, I know I need to put NOV and my number on the side of my car...but I'm not sure on the class...is it S2 or CS?

Sweet! I look forward to meeting with you and competing come Sunday!

I bought the Auto back in July of last year, mainly because I drive 130 miles a day. After doing AutoX, though, I realized that I should've bought a manual all along. Good news is, I bought the car with 40 miles on it (they had to drive it from another dealer) last Thursday, and between my normal commute and me taking light night cruises, I'm at 900 miles and pretty much broken in

You'll be S2, I believe. Now that I think about it, I never put NOV on the side of my car. Just my number and STX. The people reading times just would announce me as NOV after every lap I ran. But yeah, I'd do S2, but I'm no professional.

EN2_Squirrel 03-12-2014 05:36 PM

I will be there only on sunday though. I will be in STX.

Same here, the course looks like a blast from the videos I've watched. Holy crap that's a fast break in. Mine felt like forever, but I have basically no commute for work.
Okay cool, I know CS is grouped within S2 so I wasn't sure.
Thanks a lot for your help, looking forward to my first autocross!

RiskyTrousers 03-12-2014 07:42 PM

I'll be there! Feel free to come by and say hi, I'll have a black FRS with wedssports.

As stated earlier, get in the novice group and take full advantage of the instructors, I would highly recommend you let them drive your car. These guys are veterans and have a wealth of knowledge.

Awesome. I'm definitely going to utilize the instructors as much as I can, I'm ready to learn! Hope to see all of you guys there, should be a ton of fun.

Kodi 03-14-2014 02:29 AM

I'll be there on Sunday too. It will be my first auto-x in my Fr-S. I ll be running in Novice to learn as much as possible, but my car is classed STX due to coilovers, swaybar, 17x9 wheels, catback and a tune. I look forward to meeting all of you. I may stop by Saturday as I also live only a mile from El Toro.

whataboutbob 03-14-2014 02:38 AM

I'll be there both Saturday and Sunday. Feel free to jump in the passenger seat for a ride a long on Saturday.

Bob

Why do you put on your right shoe before your left or vice versa? Lol
People just do things different

Not knocking it but that's just a long way to go. I guess my perspective is skewed because I live right there

I'm considering running with the San Diego AutoX crowd, too. I just love the experience, it's exhilarating. Besides, I drive 65 miles one way for work, so drives like that I'm used to.

JB86'd 03-24-2014 05:43 AM

so here's one of my best runs from the day (forgot to record my fastest :bonk:)
[ame]http://youtu.be/_ygZFemsEyU[/ame]

I learned so much today. A big thanks to Bob for letting me ride along on Saturday and for all the tips.

I hit one cone, on my first run, which was an 81.043. By my 3rd run I was at 75.067. If I had more than 4 runs I'm sure I could have further improved. Can't wait for the next event.

Nice! That's good for your first time! I'm pretty sure you didn't see me there, because my car wasn't there, but at the Subaru dealer getting serviced (long story). But if you saw a funny Mazda 3 Sedan completely stock out there screaming, that was my rental I was driving. I ended up with a 74.6, I was pushing that car as hard as I possibly could :bellyroll:

cactus 03-24-2014 07:35 PM

I had a fun day out there. The course was a lot longer than I am use to at SFR events. Ended up running 71.2XX on my fastest. Time for tires.

Kodi 03-24-2014 07:58 PM

sadly, i didnt make it. came down with a stomach virus. next is the Pro Solo on 4/11.

Haha, like I said, for your first time, that's pretty good, I think. This was my second Autocross Sunday and my third Autocross Practice. You should definitely try to make it to the practice next time. Although, I do think that the next regular event is in May at Fontana. I won't be going to the Pro Solo in April.

Did you even have any wheels or tires? I didn't stay for the entire event, left at lunch, so I didn't get to see your runs in person.

Oh man, I wish I could've seen that car run from the outside. I was laughing so hard driving that rental. Funny thing is, those tires on that thing are fantastic at wearing. If it wasn't for the chunks of rubber missing from the front driver's side tire rubbing during hard cornering, you wouldn't be able to tell!
