K2 05-10-2012 01:55 PM

Hmm, sounds interesting. Don't know if the car will be broken in by then.

ubersoph 05-10-2012 02:07 PM

1000 miles in a month? Ain't no thang.

K2 05-11-2012 11:26 PM

Being one of the First 8600, I don't know when the car will arrive. Could be a month, could be a week.

ubersoph 05-19-2012 03:07 AM

Registered and breaking in my car :D

slawdio 06-06-2012 11:15 AM

I'd love to go test out the slobaru.

jt 06-06-2012 06:11 PM

Thanks to Smart, no car for me! Could have been broken in by then.

ubersoph 06-08-2012 06:04 PM

You weren't going to come out anyway :p

FT86R 06-14-2012 11:27 PM

FT86R 06-20-2012 07:54 AM

im starting to think i'm not going to even have my frs before then the dealer in draggin .if i do get it im defiantly not going to be passed the break in period :(

Fenrir 06-20-2012 01:45 PM

I'll try and be there. Time/money/co-pilot allowing.

And who needs a break-in period? The track is the best place for that ;)

jt 06-20-2012 06:12 PM

To me that sounds like a terrible idea :)

I was quite serious, all these people doing the whole "baby the car for 1000+miles!" bullshit makes me so sad. Just wait for the car to warm up, and drive it :\

ubersoph 06-21-2012 04:14 PM

Not going to touch break in here - but there's plenty of time to hit 1000 miles before the 8th :).

Sorry Feffman - I'd be game for the event if I didn't already register for this one.

Any idea on space remaining? I don't see anywhere on AMS's site to see currently registered attendees. I'm still on the fence for this, but if I need to sign up soon to get a spot I might as well just do it.

Not sure - might want to give them a call. Pretty friendly guys there :)

they have a thread on another board i'm in, sounds like there is ample space in all places now. softening economy probably doesn't help fill up these events. it does not seem like i'll have my car by this date, let alone anywhere past even a mild break-in point. if you go i'm tagging along though. and as i just discovered on my facebook page, joliet appears to have a rather nice tilted kilt...

Well, to be honest the tires are just about bald on the speed 3 at this point, but if you got wheels it's all yours :)

sickmint79 06-22-2012 01:51 PM

mm nah i'll just jump in your ride if you end up going.

I'm pretty much in at this point. Won't have a new helmet by then, but assuming I can get a spot (won't have the cash to sign up until the Friday before the event) I'll be in.

sickmint79 06-22-2012 03:19 PM

is yours not currently snell approved? i think bmw might have gone to 2005, looks like ams is ok with 2000.

going to ask them about passengers in novice...

It's Snell 2000, but I figured AMS/Autobahn would require newer.

sickmint79 06-22-2012 04:38 PM

they don't. and by jump in your ride apparently i mean jump in your ride to get down there, as they don't allow passengers in novice anymore. which stinks. maybe i can hope into ubersoph's brz... ;D

Pff, who said anything about novice? I raced like... 9 years ago I'm sure it's all still the same. Physics hasn't changed since then, has it?

sickmint79 06-22-2012 04:57 PM

raced what? i thought you hadn't been on a track yet.

My SR20 240, I used to auto-x the hell out of that in high school. But yeah I'd probably sign up for novice since I haven't been on any kind of track in a long while. And I've been driving FWD for 2+ years so I'll have to shake those habits, heh. Wonder if they'd let me move up if people are too slow.

sickmint79 06-22-2012 05:17 PM

autox and the track are a whole different ball game. so is your punishment at high speed rwd for mistakes! they will let you hop generally, unless a session is crowded, if you have a decent reason to and you've been observed to be on good behavior. as a first ever track event you should definitely be in novice though. and it's less about how fast you are and more about how good you are at following rules IMHO.

the only thing that i would think might drive change is if you are comfortable at lapping and following rules well and novice keeps getting bunched up into huge annoying newb trains.

sickmint79 06-22-2012 05:20 PM

i did novice in your car with fluid btw. i was rusty and the car was new to me so i figured best to go there, even though i've put in a fair amount of laps on south. i was going to hop if it got bunched up, but it was fine and i stayed in it the whole time. actually you might recall by the end of the day there barely seemed to be anyone going out on track - like maybe 6 in the last session.

Yeah yeah, I know :P I'm just excited to get the car out on a track, it's super fun tearing around corners on the street, so I can't even imagine how much of a blast it'll be on the track.

I'm hoping this event turns out kinda like that, but it looks like AMS is just a track event, not a car show as well. Hopefully it's not too crowded!

sickmint79 06-22-2012 05:44 PM

AMS will have more drivers. final sessions tend to be more wound down as people are tired or their cars are or whatever. most people are not idiots about passing, the only thing that is really more of a pain in that group is when people do not pay attention (or want to let the cars go) that caught up behind them. then you get to spending minutes or laps behind someone who is not letting anyone pass or eventually has a huge train that only 1-2 people can pass at a time.

when this happens they tell you to pit out, then just go back in. you lose time on track doing this, which kind of sucks, although the real sucky thing in my experience is that it hasn't taken all that long to catch up to the train again, particularly if it is a long slow one.

this is where having instructors helps and more experienced people that are better at passing or spying the blue flags (that signal you should consider letting the person behind you pass) - at fully instructor led events though they are watching for things like that and are pretty good about letting people pass regularly or having the person leading the train pit out and let everyone else break up as they get up to their speeds. really i'd say that's the primary difference between novice and intermediate, moreso than speed.

intermediate to intermediate 2 or advanced are more about speed and doing things right and i think is a jump most people take much more slowly.

sickmint79 07-05-2012 12:55 PM

I'm signed up, beginner level and I'm forced to rent a helmet cause my bro stole mine :(

You should sign up and bring the bimmer for a last hurrah before you sell it!

sickmint79 07-05-2012 02:33 PM

part of me wants to, but i don't want to get new brakes or put that much wear on these ones with that car's chubbiness. like i'd like to do it for a session, but not pay for and do a whole day!
