GT86 update - guesses and wishes
I am curious what people think will be actually be part of the 2015 upgrade, and what people would *want* for the 2015 upgrade.
My honest guess: - 15-20 hp bump through tune (easy to reflash to existing cars) - Minor reliability upgrades - Minor suspension changes, like the uprated tS arms - Aesthetic changes to the front and rear - New wheels (these are a standard refresh item) Pricing: ~$500 bump from today's prices My wish: - Optional tS upgrade package with real brakes, etc. - 2.5l motor - Additional weight saving on the front end Pricing: <$38K total for the upgraded version I suspect they won't offer my wish option until year 4 or 5. With a six year lifecycle, they will want to take it slow. Too bad for me. Of course, since most of you are already owners, you might hope they make it worse ;) |
I say we should be careful what we wish for. Updates for cars are not always a good thing. Yet i will keep my fingers crossed that they will enhance the 86 and BRZed to our liking. I like the 2.0L motor and a reflash is all that is needed from the factor at this point. I agree in regard to some minor suspension and brake upgrades.
I have really started enjoying my FRS more and more. Because it's so basic. It used to bother me when I started realizing all the differences between the BRZ/GT86 and the FRS. Now I prefer my peeled down version more. Cheers. |
Front and tail light close to FR-S or FT86 II concept, revised interior layout, a grand price bump. Thanks.
|
No Tail light condensation, Exterminated the crickets,Standard arm rest?
But on a various serious note, Track version option for USA. Open Top cleared for Production. I like to see more colors : ) like the Concept Red(Monkey Red), or the Sky metallic blue on a concept BRZ. Supercharged Option. honestly the car is nice the way it is, but a little this and that probably wouldn't hurt. |
I agree with the modest bump in hp and slight face lift will more than likely happen
But what I want is a flat 6 3.0 n/a based on the current fa20 motor. Lot of room in that engine bay:D |
I would like to see an 85hp v4 with vtec and a triptronic transmission. Also wood grain interior would be nice...
|
I would like to see exterior changes more than anything.
If it ended up looking more like the concept...Damn. Also, I really hope interior doesn't get a major facelift. I'd hate to see stereo controls on the steering wheel. More torque > more HP, at least for me. But even if both were added, there would always be people "NEEDS MOAR POWAH!!!11!!!" |

If there's going to be any interior changes, the only benefit this car should see is improved material quality. Under a philosophy of, the less hard plastics the better. If they can improve the space efficiency of the interior that's also welcome. Power...even if this car put out 300 hp, 300 lb.ft of torque plenty will still say its not enough because the Mustang, Camaro or Challenger still put out more. Maybe its me acting like an old man...but I don't find lots of power to be all that useful in most driving situations. For the majority of cars I find 150 to the 170 range acceptable. Only slow, heavy and cumbersome stuff like the CUVs, minivans and trucks feel they need to be in the 250 range. I've heard the complaints about 200 hp, and after a test drive I concluded that not only this was more power than my previous cars but even better it was power I could easily use. If my driving routine is so slow that 420 hp is a total waste...why do I want the fuel bill of such an engine when I can't use it to its potential...? |

Honestly I would be happy with just 200hp and 200tq |

I look at the twins reviews, and I see A TON of people saying "NEEDS STEERING WHEEL AUDIO CONTROLS," seriously? People are getting so spoiled. My celica had NOTHING. No working ac, I was lucky if the radio worked. But she was my baby. She had ~140HP from the factory but God knows she didn't have that much when I finally got her. It's much more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. |

I personally don't care about steering wheel controls, the less clutter on my wheel the better. Most of my work cars have them but I simply don't find them all that useful, the Fords for instance have a ton of buttons I'd never use. Although I did order a Monogram, so I'd be lying if I said I'm ok with a low spec model, I'm a bit spoiled for comfort. |
What is this "tS" thing you keep talking about?
My wish list looks about the same though: - More mid-range torque/smoother torque band (by tuning or increased displacement - not by forced induction or hybrid) - 10-30 more hp - Lighter weight up front (lighter radiator, condenser, plastic or aluminum fenders, forged aluminum control arms, etc) - Aluminum fixed opposing piston calipers (Brembo or at least Advics) - Some lightweight forged BBS or Enkei MAT wheels would be cool (but I do like the design of the stock ones) - Give steering wheel more feel/feedback - A redesigned center console with a proper slim arm rest - Memory Seats (manual/non-electric) - Seat belt height adjusters - Actual tire pressures display (psi/bar) - Miles until empty display - Oil Pressure and Temperature displays instead of analog speedo - Make or use a better manual transmission oil that's consistently smooth in all temps - Fix all the previous issues like leaking engine oil and chirping |
Wishlist for 2015:
Fix the chirping and tail light condensation Update HVAC control material/design for premium BRZ and FRS small power bump 10-20hp 1" lowered stock suspension |

Pretty much the perfect GT86, less the engine upgrade. |
My wish is for these kinds of wishing threads to end and for folks to enjoy their cars lol. But seriously seems there are more speculation and wish and thoughts threads all based in Rumours and what's ifs etc...
I like way car is now for the price it is what it is. There are aftermarket solutions for power and luxury for this car an amazing aftermarket actually so waiting I ask "why"?..... Just no need to wait. Once this car had everything people want it'll be 35-40k off lot then people will bitch about price? It's a never ending cycle IMO.. |

So $35-$38K would be just fine for me. Heck, a lot of people on this board have dumped over $10K into mods, so clearly I'm not the only one who sees more potential in this chassis. |

Again with this stuff?
Sigh. That being said, I think the only big changes we might see for GT86 2.0 would be a facelift. |

Just enjoy what we have. You keep holding out for the "better" model you will never buy the car because it will always get better. |

My wish is that these threads will end

Consider, if you can, that this may not be about people trying to feel "special". I don't give a crap if I have one that is better than you. And if you feel inferior about it, that's your problem. Like many people, I drove the car and felt it was missing things I want, and there is nothing on the market yet that fits my needs, so I am not buying yet. That's simple. I was living in another country for the first year it was sold, and we have two other cars, so I don't need to rush. When the revision comes out, I will look at it, and if it still doesn't work for me, I will buy something else. Also very simple. So how about *you* go enjoy your car instead of berating me about what I should do? |

There are a million threads on here that I am not interested in. I cannot imagine why I would go on there and say, "I'm not interested in this subject. Everyone should stop talking about it!" Wait, I have an idea. How about people who are not interested in the thread don't read it, and don't complain about it? It's really a novel approach, I know, but it just might work. |
300BHP and around 200FT-LB should be fine for this car. I'm really starting to build a picture of what I want to do to this car beyond the OFT, OFH, LSD, bushings, Modify 1st and 2nd gears, adjustable struts and a few others. Its that or a two door Genesis Hyundai.

Have you driven the gen coupe??? It's liking being the captain of a boat... |
Wishful thinking but they should just kill of the Scion brand, bring the new 'FRS' as a GT86 in NA with a power boost.
No changes to exterior please. This car looks fucking great. |

The people I was talking about are the people who are sitting on a loan or the cash to buy the car and aren't doing it in case the next version is so much better. It may be or it may be the exact same with a face lift. We don't know. You are waiting on a car that may or may not happen. There are a plethora up upgrades for this car to fix nearly all the things most people have issues with. And the next car might not have all the things you want either. You just going to wait until it finally does? It's the 200 threads of "what if the next one has a turbo?" or "should I buy my FRS now, or wait until the monogram comes out" (yes, I know it's out), or "should I buy the 10 series or the monogram or should I wait for the 2015" Hopefully you get my point, @imag (yes, this time I'm talking specifically to you). There is so little information on the changes coming in 2015 and what we have is SUPER vague. Also, there are a TON of threads on "do I buy [enter trim or year here] or wait for [other selected trim or year here]." It's clutter. As far as me demanding how you spend $30k…..I don't really care (although from your original post, you could probably have most of what you want on the current FRS for $38k). Do what you want with it, but use the search feature first. You might just find the answer you are looking for has been posted many, many times. If that doesn't work, there is always google (which I have better success with anyway for this site)….and see what you come up with. |

You seem to think I was asking if I should buy or wait, but I wasn't, and I don't think any of the other posters were either. That's a decision each of us will make on our own when the new car comes out. FWIW, I have used search and have read the prior comments. All sorts of things had been speculated about, but the refresh had not been confirmed until Tada's post. That makes a discussion relevant to those who have been waiting (for our own good reasons) to buy the car. If you see no value to it, then you can move on. Enjoy your beer. In general, people seem to take offense at the wishing in the thread without understanding that it was structured that way in order to separate what people think will *actually* happen from what they *want* to happen. The thread was also intended to isolate speculation on refresh possibilities from the conversation about Tada-san's post. Thank you to those who have made compelling contributions. |

So are we done here then? |
Please stop the drama.

I am sure there will be some cosmetic changes and some sort of power increase. It may even be as minimal as a tune or something just giving it a pump of 20-30hp would be my guess. But again who knows, everything is speculation at this point.
|
Your 15-20hp bump isn't going to come thru tuning alone, the only reason the aftermarket is managing it is because they don't have to go thru regorous gvt. emissions testing. Toyota/Subaru has this engine tuned on the edge of the brink the way is.
My best guess is $30k option with a eaton type supercharger used in the Elise Toyota motor. Not happy with that 'cause they could go turbo with no price increase. |
NEIN NEIN NEIN!!!
lighter and replace sound tube with TRD exhaust minus bass mouth tips. and fix the damn crickets once and for all, and the idle dip (Don't get me wrong, I love dip, but mostly with chips or veggies, not with my idle... ) |
I mentioned it in another thread, but the my15 FRS will not have any mechanical changes/updates. This is a fact, not a guess. I can't say for my16, but my15 definitely has no mechanical changes from the current model.

People "wishing for" on all these threads. I have never seen a car forum with so many of these types of threads starting from before you could even buy the car. Personally I'm fine with the power, but you have to admit all these threads says something and that's most people want 50+ more HP and lessened torque dip.
I think it says move Tada to a project as far away from the GT-86 as possible, give the refresh to Subaru. This car will never be a Toyota so forget Toyota reliability, way to many major parts are manufactured by Subaru, so, I hope they let Subaru take a stab at perfecting the refresh. They have the FA20T on the shelf to play with, and are genius at selling value packed cars at a low price (of course don't let them make much if any styling changes.). |
