No Front License Plate
 

Just got my WRB BRZ and really really don't want to run a front license plate.. Law of Ontario says you gotta have both so I know I'll have to eventually.. Any suggestions on where to put it without drilling? Not a huge fan of the tow hook mount.

Tow hook mount plate relocation kit is probably your safest bet, or you can stick the plate into the front dash like I see some ricers do, so the plate will become a projectile and chop your head off in an accident.

lmfao that's a picture in my head. I have it there now, just didn't want to drill anything or decide until I've made up my mind. Such a nice looking front bumper :(

Not sure if you can pull it off on the BRZ, but I've got mine mounted using the factory mount but positioned lower and not screwed into the bumper. Instead I used a longer bolt and big washers to hold it to the grille.

When I had my vintage Fiat 500 in Toronto, I had a retractable plate on the front. These do screw in underneath, but are very easy to install and quite handy. A quick click and the plate retracts when you no longer want to see it.

Just today I saw a suction cup mount that many Porsche guys use. I was told the suction mounts were heavy duty and didn't give, but I have my hesitation.

A friend of mine bought something called SpeedFlip for his high-performance vehicle, if you're looking for a Knight Rider type gadget ;)

I will say that chances of being pulled over is high without a front plate. The only time I've been pulled over (and as a passenger too) was for a missing front plate. A nice cop will give you a warning, but otherwise it's a huge pain to go and fight it.

I didn't want the tow hook mount either, but didn't want to drill. I briefly tried putting some foam backing on the plate and merely zip-tying it to the middle of the grille area. It looked like crap up close, so I bought the Perrin tow hook mount.

For what it's worth, I actually like it after installing it.

I got the Grimmspeed relocation kit because of the same reasons as you (also on a WRB). However, recently I've been contemplating installing the license plate in the middle where it was meant to be. I don't know what it is about the color, but I feel like it does a better job dividing the mustache.

Definately look into using the grill....either zip tie or use some sort of mounting that will grad onto the grill

My suggestion is the relocation kits using the the front tow hook.
That's what I did. Used the Grimmspeed in my car

Tinted plate covers help to dull down the bright white. Worked for me, if you want to run a front plate

GrimmSpeed Tow Hook Plate Relocator is the best route to go...

You can take it off at car shows and still look good while you're on the road with the front plate displayed by law.

I ordered it way before I even got the car.

The only reason I don't want to get the tow-hook plate is because I might want to do the JDM looking towhook with the red loop hanging down :/

But in Japan everybody runs a front plate in the middle. That's JDM! Just sayin' :D

I used automotive doubled sided tape in the two areas where the bolts would've been instead of drilling holes and it held on pretty well.

I've seen a DIY magnetic mount that seems to work pretty well somewhere on the forums.

Yeah I've seen this too, I just had a hard time taking off the bumper on my FR-S and I don't want to fuck this one up.. lol

Do you have a BRZ or FR-S?? I'm not sure how the FR-S factory bracket looks like.

I have a BRZ. The bumpers come off the same way though /sigh

Same here - I had a ton of parts - the custom "HCHIRKU "plate started the ball rolling in June 2012 - way before I even ordered the car in Dec 2012 :)

So lucky... BC only allows 6 characters in the name plate... :thumbdown:

So I did it.. I used drilled into the front bumper to mount my plate.. I cried on the inside every bit of the way.. Oh well! Doesn't look toooooo bad I guess :P

It's tougher for BRZ's bit I don't mind having it on the grill for the FRS - seems like an easy piece to replace. In the bumper itself is another question...

Hey folks, buried in news articles about Ontario changing licence plate slogan is a statement that they are considering eliminating front licence plate. Regardless of your feelings about our Ontario government, you gotta love the idea of no more front plate!

After seeing a front plat on cars for several decades I don't even notice them. In fact cars without them look weird to me. I guess what I am saying is I don't care one way or the other. Be a nice cost savings for them though.

Same as T Coat... I'm so used to have two plates that I even like (I know weird) how the cars looks with the two license plates...

I agree. I personally don't think it suits the 86 platform. It looks good on some cars, however, like the new Lexus IS or Lancer Evo X.

I think the other reason I don't like it is because it's so ubiquitous, especially in Ontario. You go to an 86-centric meet in the GTA these days and pretty much EVERY car has the same generic plate relocate, to the point where it's not even unique anymore.

I would think most people do it to avoid screws holes in the bumper cover.

Personally speaking that is why I did it anyways. I agree it doesn't look any better mounted on the tow hook.
The magnetic option seems feasible too, I just don't like the idea of the plate not being hard mounted.

I did that in my Celica back in the 90s but I found that the water temperature started to creep up noticeably. (the needle went up a few increments higher). Figured it was because the plate was blocking the radiator. Do you notice any difference with this setup?

I've been driving without a front plate since last August and I haven't been pulled over yet. I've been behind, face to face and in traffic with cops and nothing yet. Finger crossed.

Good point, but then I also see a lot of cars that have existing bolt holes and have still relocated their plate and not filled in the holes afterwards...

Us BRZ owners are kind of lucky that our OEM plate bracket mounts on the black plastic "moustache" on the front bumper, so the holes are not really visible after removing the bracket.

I removed my entire plate bracket and zip-tied my plate to the lower grille, so it's closer to the ground. It cleans up the front and actually kind of tricks your eyes into making the car look lower.

It will happen eventually. I was driving around for about 6 months with my plate on my dash, and got pulled over while passing the scene of an accident because the cop spotted my plate on my dash as soon as I crested the hill coming towards him. He was on foot and waved me over.

Luckily he just let me off with a warning.

Happened once in my 335i as well, which I had a plate relocate on, but the screw had come loose and I didn't want the whole thing to fall off the car, so I tossed it in the trunk and just forgot about it. Again I was let off with a warning, but both cops said they'd ticket me if they saw me driving again with no plate on the front.

Tow hook plate isn't supposed to look unique. It's the same mount point for everyone.
Keeps the front fascia from being screwed.

Did you have a death wish? lol. Front plate on your dash in an accident.. I could only imagine if that sharp metal happened to get thrown at your face or a passengers face.

It's a demonstration of your love and devotion to your car. You sacrifice your face to save the car's bumper from being drilled! S:thumbsup:till infinitely superior to those who hang CD on their rearview mirror. In those cases, you get CD shrapnel stuck in your face in an accident for no purpose whatsoever.
