How do you drive your car?

Hello,

I see al these topics with fantastic reviews about the FRS/GT86/BRZ, with drivers drifting into corners or roundabouts. ''Such a nice car...the car drifts so easily. Now that's FUN...a great car for the track'' :)

But who actually drives his car that way? I mean: how many of you actually drive the car like, well: the way it's made/meant to be handled. Going to an abandoned road or track and pushing the limits...(?)
And how many of you just drive the care like any other car, occasionally putting your pedal to the metal on a straight, dry, road (hoping you won't slip into the scenery ;) ).

Many of us might never know how much fun this car could be, despite owning one. Naturally: drifting and riding 'on the edge' requires some skill. Still, I'm under the impression that I enjoy the GT86 without having the 'skills' like all those professional reviewers.

I was thinking about this too. As much as I'd love to be drifting and pedal all the way down, there is nowhere within 3 hours of me to do so without getting a ticket.

malave7567 02-28-2014 12:09 PM

I've set my car up more for autocross and drive fairly mild on the street. No need to go crazy on the street, save it for events :)

f0rge 02-28-2014 12:12 PM

I tend to go faster than normal on off-ramps and a couple of twisty roads I frequent, but no, anyone who's "drifting" this car and hanging the tail out everywhere on the street is a moron.

wheelhaus 02-28-2014 12:17 PM

I tend to be a fast driver, but I'm not all about drifting. It's fun in the snow and occasionally in the wet, but there's too much at stake to really go bananas on public roads. I want grip and G's. Track days, mmmm...

That said, I will still apex everything. Everything.

shiumai 02-28-2014 12:17 PM

i drive normal on the street and more aggressively on twisty canyon roads; but i don't like losing traction on either. no drifting for me.

ZionsWrath 02-28-2014 12:19 PM

I redline any chance I get

I can't help myself :(

USMC 02-28-2014 12:34 PM

I just drive it. That is the best part if it. Drive it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This guy gets it.

mfbmike 02-28-2014 12:48 PM

Throw really grippy tires on it and then drive it hard. This car handles amazingly well when you can keep the rear end in check a bit more.

Braces 02-28-2014 12:54 PM

Straight line speed is not what this car is about. I have my favorite corners where I will let the tail out. Of course .... not near people or other cars. My favorite 90 degree corner leads up an onramp to the freeway. I've grooved a perfect drift on that corner most mornings. Keeps me grinning until I get to work. Again ... no other cars near me.

AznBRZer 02-28-2014 01:32 PM

I drive it just slow enough to piss people off behind me. Sometimes they honk...sometimes they flash me. Sometimes...I give them the finger. :D

Tromatic 02-28-2014 03:16 PM

I practice driving well, which does not necessarily mean fast.

DFW-FRS 02-28-2014 03:24 PM

I burned through the set of stock tires in 9,000 miles without a single track day/autocross. I've calmed down after replacing them, but man that was the best 9,000 miles ever.

DarkSunrise 02-28-2014 03:39 PM

Daily commute: I take it pretty easy. Maybe redline once/day for fun.

Windy back roads: Between 5/10ths to 7/10ths.

Track: Flat out for the most part.

dirtymax 02-28-2014 03:58 PM

She gets abused. Hard break in from day one. I redline it often but the wife drives it like an old lady. I figure if the car going to blow up it better be under warranty. I'm a firm believer in the hard break in method

FRSLOW 02-28-2014 06:55 PM

I drive my car like a grandma all the time.. I try to be as responsible as I can while driving. The only real time I let loose is if it's a closed back road and I know there's no other vehicles on the road.

Vracer111 02-28-2014 07:06 PM

I drive in a manner that consistently averages 20-21 mpg daily driving...with zero drifting involved.

My last tank I got 20 mpg and I drive 95% highway

in car blasting music cool is it?

Slow_86 02-28-2014 08:53 PM

I'm still in break-in, but as soon as i get out of that phase, every day its wet out will consist of some sliding around.

RICEBOY_86 02-28-2014 08:54 PM

I baby it a lot but.... But like the op said I really drive it... I'm into drifting so I kick out the tail a lot just to get my temptations out... But nothing to stupid

You dont need those professional skills to enjoy the car. What you need is a good foundation of driving theory, a BIT of experience, and a sense of humility and a desire to improve.

Come to a few track days ...and you will understand. "drivers" help "drivers" and we love to talk to people about driving and we love to help you have fun! At any good HPDE event you will drive at your own pace ..but your "pace" WILL quicken as the day goes on ..and you will learn the limits of your car.

I'm glad you don't live here then lol we have enough of those here

JDMsolstice 03-02-2014 01:27 AM

Babied in the morning on my way to work (casual). Sideways around every corner on my way home when there's no traffic (drift). And driven hard on the mountain roads on the weekends (grip).

shellslinger 03-02-2014 01:36 AM

I live life at 5 mph below the speed limit :D

You should have a third option... Drive it like a true sports car!

Many people here think that this car is exclusively a drift car and it isn't. It's a great driftable sports car.

Young_makaveli 03-02-2014 05:18 AM

I drive it normally during the day and at night when there's nobody around I usually push it a bit

Had to check nice and easy as the car is only a week old and won't be out of the break in period for some time.

Ha, ha but after 1,000 miles its ...:burnrubber:

CatDaddysBBQ 03-03-2014 01:34 PM

I do not screw around when there is anybody around that I could hit. I'm not a moron.

BUT, I tend to get a bit squirrelly whenever possible. I have had a BLAST drifting everywhere in the snowy chicago winter.

I also am not 19 years old - I'm 32 yrs old and have been honing skills for a while. If I tried what I can do now when I was a teenager, the car wouldn't have lasted a month.

BRZZZZZZZZZZ 03-03-2014 02:19 PM

Nice easy break in, always wait for 5km after water temp is normal before going over 3000rpm so I know the oil temps are up, then I drive fairly normally unless there is some nice open roads (rare) or I plan to go to auto x.
