Different accelerator pedals: production vs pre-production?
 
I've seen two different types of accelerator pedals used on the 86/BRZ twins. My guess is that the type shown in the first picture is the type found on pre-production cars, and the latter is the production spec.

This is the accelerator found on the UK-spec Toyota GT-86, at least according to Toyota.co.uk:

However, if you look at the accelerator pedal on Pekingduck's production FR-S, he has a different, less-sporty kind:

The same is true for the BRZ. If you look at this picture from what I assume is a preproduction BRZ, you can see the same accelerator pedal as the one in the GT-86 above:

That was my guess as well, but looking at how the carpet mats are cut there is no way for it to interfere with the pedals. The car also features brake override, so if the brake is pressed after the accelerator pedal has been pressed the throttle will be cut, so that doesn't make sense, either. I still think it does have something to do with unintended acceleration though; perhaps Toyota feared that the brake and gas weren't spaced far enough apart with the pre-production pedal since it has that little extension on the bottom left.

I pointed this out earlier, and if you Look on the Subaru and Scion Websites, you will find that they indeed have different pedals. The BRZs have the diagonal Heel-Toeing Pedal and the FRS' have a different pedal that is slightly curved to the left...

Have you seen the heel-toe pedal in the US? I haven't seen it on any US BRZs yet.

Edit. Just checked the photos on Subaru.com and it is there... interesting. Maybe it's limited only? It does say pre-production model shown though.

I believe most of the stock photos online are pre-production models though.

The "newer" type pedals (2nd set of pics) look identical to the ones in the current WRX/STI. I'm guessing they'll be using those since they already have them in the parts bin.

As far as I can tell, Japan / possibly overseas is getting the larger pedal and North America isn't, but it was shown in pre-production photos before the final North American-spec was finalized and/or they were European photos that were "modified" to North American-spec and the pedal wasn't changed.

I was able to HT easily with the reps car I sat in. I didn't check which pedals they were but whatever they were felt great.

Good catch. Those pedals match up to Pekingduck's production model.

Scion's website has the bigger gas pedal shown in the floor mate picture, but not in the sport pedals picture.

I think we already have our answer... pre-production spec pedals did not make it. The existing ones look the same as what has been in the WRX since 2002, which isn't a bad thing. At least they didn't cheap out and not include the aluminum dead pedal, which was the case with the 2002-? WRX.

If my BRZ comes with the regular STI pedal, I'll be disappointed. Unfortunately, I can certainly see Subaru doing that to save money on the US models. :(

My BRZ has the smaller pedal. I find it very hard to heal and toe, I wish it came with this pedal

It's not just USDM models. They stopped it for Japan too, because of concerns over unintended acceleration.

I would too. Of all of the cars I've owned this is the only one I can't use the side of my foot to heel/toe. That boggles my mind. Guess I need to do some shopping.

I bought the Cusco pedal, and it's a huge improvement.

The pedal in that pick would look better, though.
