Do you break the law and refuse to put a front license plate on?

I live in a state where front plates are required.

I simply refuse to put one on because I think it aesthetically ruins the car.

Rio 02-14-2014 02:12 AM

With my Carrera I refused for 7 years. During that time I got pulled over twice and only got a fix it ticket. Another Porsche Club member tried the same thing and got 3 fix it tickets and one huge fine on the 4th because the judge found out about the other 3.

I now have a front plate :-)

deucethemoose 02-14-2014 02:13 AM

This probably belongs in the PNW forum, not in general discussion.

You'll put a plate on REAL quick once you get the $195 ticket for Failure to Display. Ask me how I know.....

The PNW is not the only area that requires front plates though.

Car does look better without it though.

tzhu07 02-14-2014 02:18 AM

You know I admire the Tesla Model S owners here in WA. I swear literally every one that I've seen has no front plate.

I guess if you can afford a $70K+ car, you can eat the ticket.

deucethemoose 02-14-2014 02:23 AM

And Corvette drivers.

fatoni 02-14-2014 02:25 AM

is it really that big of a deal? mine drives the same either way so i dont care.

Liquidsnake 02-14-2014 02:27 AM

Yes. I have been ticketed twice. I pay the $25 fine.
I will never put a front plate on. Ever.

No one will dictate to me what I can and can't do to my car.

I don't care if the fine was $100 per infraction. They can go to hell.

The car looks much nicer with no front plate.

turbobee 02-14-2014 02:52 AM

In Arizona, we don't need to have front plates... sucks that you guys have to have them :(

HATED1 02-14-2014 02:54 AM

Failing to put one on gives a cop reason to pull you over and look into other violations. If that's all you have then no sweat. But it you have no license, no insurance, etc, it can be costly.

strat61caster 02-14-2014 03:05 AM

Dealer didn't install, I got lazy. I'll put it on when I get a ticket. Don't care either way.

And I completely agree that it isn't worth it to attract unwanted attention like others have mentioned. I'm not too concerned about the aesthetics of the car when my foot is smashed to the floor or I'm turning into a tight hairpin.

:burnrubber:

finch1750 02-14-2014 04:16 AM

Nope. I dont want to give cops another reason to come after me.

Plus i pay for custom plates so i may as well get my moneys worth. Lol

75 carrera 02-14-2014 05:42 AM

We'll over 25yrs since I've run a front plate......haven't been stopped once,

I suggest having both of those items before driving.

agreed
i will never have a front plate yuk

PhreshhWun 02-14-2014 08:11 AM

I've always drove with both plates until I got one of the twins. The dealer didn't want to drill into the bumper and I personally thought it looked much better without it. I've been going like this for approx. 6-7 months and had no cop troubles at all.. I find majority of the new cars down here don't drive with their front plates on :iono:

Luis_GT 02-14-2014 08:16 AM

Nope... I drive without a front licence plate like the law states :D

Ryuu0u 02-14-2014 08:18 AM

I don't get the argument for requiring a front plate when motorcycles don't require one. On top of that I always see muscle cars, corvettes, and exotics in my area with out front plates. I highly doubt they get pulled over for that reason alone.

fourvalleys 02-14-2014 08:23 AM

I live in a state that doesn't require a front plate, but the state my plates are from does. No front plate even when I'm in that state, and I've never been bothered.

They say one reason you need one is to give them a flat surface so they can take radar on the front of your car. That seems like a big problem in the states that don't require one...

Ryuu0u 02-14-2014 08:27 AM

^^ I've heard about that but that gets thrown out the window when you look at the front of a sport bike. I think the requirement is dated by todays standards. Only reason I can see it being useful is for red light cameras and that's totally another issue on it's own.

jblmr2 02-14-2014 08:30 AM

I don't run a front plate and I live in WA state. Last summer I got a speeding ticket. The cop never said a thing about the lack of a plate.

DarkSunrise 02-14-2014 08:42 AM

I've got a front plate and don't mind. One thing I like is my dealership mounted my plate lower, in the black plastic grill area. I can pull my front plate and it's much less noticeable, like in this picture:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7339/9...60a812ff_o.jpg

And in some shots, it pretty much disappears:

When I lived in TX and had my vette, I didn't mount the front plate or the mounting bracket.. The others I've seen looked so bad.. I kept the license plate under the passenger side floor mat at all times.. I got stopped once in eight years.. I told the LEO that the mount was never installed by the dealer and showed him the plate.. He left me off with a verbal warning to get it "fixed".
I think he understood how anal I was about the looks of my car..
Moved a few years later to the Carolina's where front plates are not required..
Hate the look and having to have holes drilled into the bumper... And it's worthless..

Superhatch 02-14-2014 09:31 AM

I don't run one here in WI where it's required. What I don't understand is why some states feel it's fine to not have one, and in other states it's a law. Is there something those states with a law know that the others dont? Is there some secret study that says it makes roads safer, or you catch more criminals etc? Imo it ruins the looks of sporty cars to put a metal square on the front of a bumper.

I've been pulled over once so far, and it was a month after I got the car in May of 2012 (just after the car came out) and I think the cop just wanted to know what it was! He let me off with a verbal warning.

shiumai 02-14-2014 09:42 AM

That's why i figured out how to make my license plate frame non-permanent - only caveat is that this is for the BRZ:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35261

it's on for daily driving, and comes off for photos or car meets. on and off in 2 seconds - literally. no one would know any different just by looking at it.

PoorMansRacing 02-14-2014 09:47 AM

I used to rock a foreign plate on the front of my vehicles and (surprisingly) never got police attention. But the older I get, the less I care, and I don't want to bring more attention to my car than it already gets.

blackfireball5 02-14-2014 10:02 AM

I have been pulled over twice for not having my front plate in Ohio. Recently on my Celica the cop said if he saw me again he'd ticket me. So it's only a matter of time since he got me a mile from my house. I have since stuck it in my front window in hopes that that would be sufficient until I can sell my car and get my FRS. ;)

I agree that a front plate doesn't help its looks, however, whether or not you wish to comply with that law is your call ..... :)

Maryland requires front plates to be mounted but I don't have it on. Our cars look much cleaner without front plates.

So far I haven't been stopped *knocks on wood*

Ammunition 02-14-2014 02:57 PM

I refused to when I first got my car since I heard that it is, in general, rare that you'll get a ticket for it.

First time I parked downtown for 20-30 minutes (literally like two days after I put my new plate on) I came back with a $80 citation for it that also mentioned that the front plate couldn't be in the dash, and so the plate went on. I've got it zip-tied atm, but I'm trying to get a custom frame made that will clip onto the grill - I will not be drilling any holes into my car.

At the time I didn't even know that meeter maids could cite you for it - which is complete BS seeing as your car is PARKED and therefore the lack of a front plate doesn't impede them from being able to get your plate information. :sigh:

Miniata 02-14-2014 03:10 PM

I run without front plates on four of our cars, including the BRZ, and have for years. Haven't gotten a ticket for it, but did get a friendly verbal warning once about ten years ago when I had it stuck in the windshield.

BlaineWasHere 02-14-2014 03:15 PM

I often find myself in areas with ZERO legit crime and cops have nothing better to do. Also in certain municipalities around here, including San Francisco, parking inforcment can write no front plate tickets to parked cars. This is a ticket they write to ANY car parked without a front plate because unlike cops, these people have ONE job, to write bull shit tickets.

So yeah I have a front plate.

If I had that license location, I would not display it as well!

I don't mind the location on mine, centered in the black grill area.
Just my opinion. Though having one does tend to eliminate the BS stops that we all enjoy so much. :D

zenki_levin 02-14-2014 04:48 PM

Had warning for 'no plate' on my old civic. Decided to put one on cause i didn't want to deal with fines and such. Best thing is they saw that i didn't had a plate on at 2 in the morning when they drove thru my neighbourhood. I thought cops had better things to do than write silly tickets...

Do you have a larger pic of that carrera in your avatar? Looks great.

asianbob 02-14-2014 04:50 PM

KS doesn't require them either. They ruin the look of any car

IronSean 02-14-2014 04:52 PM

Luckily they aren't required in my Province, but the biggest argument I've heard for them is it makes finding wanted cars/people/etc easier for patrolmen since they can usually pick out a number or two even at highway speeds to help narrow down if that's THE blue Civic leaving a domestic dispute, or just A blue civic minding it's business. Saving them the time of turning around and catching up, and not bothering an innocent bystander just for his model and colour choice.

NepeanFR-S 02-14-2014 05:18 PM

I tried to get away without a front plate when I purchased my previous car. Pulled over twice for it in the first month. Shiny new red sports cars attract all kinds of attention.

kodyo 02-14-2014 05:28 PM

Made my own front mount, here's the DIY I did:

pheoxs 02-14-2014 05:29 PM

I have the opposite problem. My evo has a license mount molded into the bumper and we don't have front plates here. Trying to figure out what to put there...
