So how are the 2014s holding up?
I have had my beloved BRZ for a month and a half and love it. No issues I am glad to say, but how are other 2014s holding up...have you had issues and what are they. What has been improved over the 2013?
|
Eating themselves and breaking all over the place. Do not buy.
|
my 14 hasn't had anything like the forums suggest. I had condensation in the tail lamps the second day I owned the car, took pictures but it hasn't come back (and that was October). I have a rattle in the back, I think its the rear deck lid rattle. Nothing serious, no chirps, CELs, rough idles, pinging, blinking lights. nada.
|
I doubt anything was improved for the '14 model year. There are tons of '13 owners (myself included) who have had no issues from day 1 (no CEL, no crickets, no rear deck popping, no rough idle).
I had my dash bubble up in one spot but that's been it. Obviously some rattling here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary. |
I think the only "updates" to the '14 models, besides creature comforts and color selection, were HPFP and ECU updates which, at this point, haven't solve the crickets, and most '13s have already been updated with these parts or haven't shown any issues yet.
90% of the early problems were solved by late '13, and was why I put the FR-S back to the top of the list of cars around $25k to get when the chance came up (and did). |
Other than the fact the engine sounds very rattley when it's cold, no issues to report. Damn those fuel pumps are noisy, though.
I still smile everytime I click the unlock button on my keyfab and jump in. F'ing love this car |
I've got crickets
|
Only issue for me is the knocking noise the temps are in the 40's or lower on a cold engine for me.
|
I've had the car over a year (15k miles) and it's had issues, but they aren't big enough for me to care:
-Rough idle a little, but no stalls -Leaking tail lights, eventually bought new gaskets from gasketninja -crickets, who doesn't -window seal rolling -rear deck popping -various rattles This may sound like a lot, but jesus christ they are incredibly minor issues that are blown out or proportion. |
My biggest problem so far, which isn't major, is the cricket noise that everyone talks of. I didn't have it until I put a 94 grade fuel in my car which really amplified the sound but since going back to 91 they have been quiet, though, still there. Obviously not fixed for the 2014s.
|
I'm really curious to see if any 2014's will have the DI seal failure.
|
I guess I should have said that I did have tail light condensation a while back and rough idle once, but that's it. I feel bad for those who have not been so lucky, but it just shows how much people love these cars that they carry on...
|
I have some frustrations with the head unit: poor sound quality, usability of the GPS & problems with the new Aha function being really flakey. But problems other people had about GPS lock - mine is perfect, and Bluetooth always connects and stays connected (Moto X phone).
I'm at 1800 miles and I occasionally have crickets. No rattles that I haven't been able to hunt down and eliminate. No taillight condensation. No oil leaks etc. I am a little bit concerned that I installed a catch can on the PCV to intake line and expected to trap some oil but instead I see fuel with just a little oil. Overall really good in my opinion for a $30k car! |

Keep in mind, I'm only referring to the crickets, rattles, and condensation type things... the DI seals is a whole 'nother world of mess. Maybe I'm mis-reading you and you were referring to those people who REALLY have had some bad luck, like those who've blown engines on stock cars... idunno. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I'm just sick of stressing out over constantly reading about all these "problems" that the twins have. |
Had my 2014 for 3 months now. No issues. Have not heard any crickets yet but my hearing is pretty much shot so if the sound is not loud I probably won't hear it.
|
I've had my 2014 since December and I have crickets and condensation in my tails :/.

I'm also in AZ, which probably explains the lack of condensation.
|
I'm in northwest Florida and we have crazy humidity here. Gonna contact my dealer about both issues soon, the condensation only showed up over the past week maybe.

One or two might not matter, but after a while they add up and can be so annoying that they ruin the whole experience. My previous car...a 2007 Civic SI...had zero issues...none...nada....zilch for 80,000 miles...that's the standard I am comparing to. Don't get me wrong, I do love the BRZ and I hope that continues. |
All are minor issues, but at 1800 miles and 20 days of ownership I've experienced the following:
-Tail Condensation -Rattle from passenger C pillar -Rough idle -Incredibly notchy 2nd gear when cold -Trunk doesn't close properly - takes way too much force Holding off on these issues until the 3k break-in oil change. Still, car drives so well these things don't bother me. Very impressive machine, and I'm coming from a heavily modded E46 M3 |
2014 purchased mid December. Currently at 3500 miles. Noticed I had crickets with my latest fill up at Chevron. Will have to see if it persists. Windows squeak occasionally. Replaced rear tail gasket with gasket ninja when I painted them but no issues so far. Biggest gripe is the transmission when cold. Sometimes won't go into first or second gear without forcing it.
|
I haven't had any problems with mine. I had the fuel pump chirp a bit a couple weeks ago but its gone away again. Seems to only chirp after filling the tank back up oddly enough. Only had it chirp a couple times and it didn't stick around long. Even if it did its not very loud chirping. The only quirk that bothers me is the transmission in the cold weather.
|
I took delivery of my 2014 frs in november, currently has 7500miles on it. i have:
-Rear deck popping -tail light condensation -Transmission is hard to shift down to 1st and 2nd when cold. Perfect when it warms up. Cant knock the car for that since it is -30 here. -car started and shut off right away 3 or 4 times one morning but, again its -30 and i cant blame the car for that. pretty minor stuff really. |
Took delivery Mid December. I have Fuel Pump chirp but it comes and goes. And I noticed that it's a bit louder when its warm out. 2.2K so far.
|
Ive had my 2014 for almost 4 months, so far ive had to change my high pressure fuel pump, and tail lights. But i have to say it an odd car, weird noises sometimes i hear some knocking when i go over a bump but not always. thankfully nothing major, but i hope nothing else needs replacing. other than that i love it
|
Just hit 4000 miles on my '14, production date of 8/13.
I have: Fuel pump chirp Obnoxious rear deck and dash rattles haven't had tail light condensation, rear deck popping, window issues, rough idle, or transmission grinding that seem common with this car. Even though the rattles drive me crazy I can't complain, it's holding up well so far. |
does "the curse" come with the 14's?? just curious....
|
So how are the 2014s holding up?
Lol a little. I have a 14 with 10k on it

I have a '13 here….ZERO issues, but crickets. Mine come and go. I had them right at the beginning, then they left after about a month, then back again in december and gone again in January. I'm not worried about it really. They are familiar friends when they come back :bonk::bonk:

Whaaaaaaa!? |
Put the passenger window down when backing out yesterday morning to check for traffic, and that's where it stayed. It was 22 degrees out. Dealer (an hour away) re-initialized the windows. Windows-type problem. Windows-type solution.
1250 miles. 3rd week of ownership. Haven't even made the first payment. Not an enormous deal, but far from impressive. |
Got my 2014 in late October.
2nd day already got taillight condensation at the top but not too bad, seems to be the same as when I drove a EK Civic back in the late 90's where condensation happens with its headlights. Mine is garage parked so the condensation goes away after a few hours. No very noticeable crickets since I use ethanol free Shell V-Power 91. 2nd gear is a little harder to shift into when cold but that's the same as the DC2 Integras back in the mid 90's. Only minor design flaw I can see are the sun visors, if you adjust them too much it pops off the plastic hinge, and just got to snap it back into place (this car is really cheap compare to old Hondas lol). If you think 13 is unlucky, 14 is unlucky too in Chinese (it means sure death lol). |
