Toyota FT-86 shows at Beijing Auto Show

11 Attachment(s)
The original Toyota FT-86 concept is being shown by Toyota at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show currently underway in China. Although the FT-86 has not yet been shown at any North American auto shows, this move by Toyota goes to show the increased importance placed on the Chinese market by the world's car manufacturers.

Not much new is shown since this appears to be the same original concept car first debuted at the past Tokyo Motor Show. The only new element seen is the trunk being opened during prep for the show, which is likely a fuel cell (placed there just for concept use purposes). The open trunk also shows that the FT-86 does not feature a hatch (as some speculated) but a standard trunk.

Well here's hoping that the back seats are at least a 60/40.

According to the article, "The only new element seen is the trunk being opened during prep for the show, which is likely a fuel cell (placed there just for concept use purposes)."

Well there goes the fastback idea. Was hoping for a hatch version :bs:

Makes sense having a fuel cell for now. I doubt it has any internal characteristics of a production car, spare tire, tire jack, main fuel tank etc.

Next major show is SEMA 11/02- 11/05/2010 and then LA Auto Show press days 11/17-11/18/2010

My guess is the FT will be at the LA Show as that has taken over as the big US show now that everybody has abandoned the Detroit (NAIAS) Show.

I'm with you on that, I'd been crossing my fingers hoping for one, but this doesn't mean that they still can't make one.

Jordo! 04-30-2010 06:13 AM

Yippie. We get to look inside the trunk.

no_name 04-30-2010 02:47 PM

Part of the appeal of the original (at least for me) was the cavernous trunk that came with the hatchback model. I could fit a mountain bike with both wheels on back there. It was awesome.

The back seats better fold 60/40

KyShro 05-02-2010 12:30 AM

HATCH! HATCH! HATCH!

Dark 05-02-2010 01:13 AM

I want it the way it is. :P

Franisco 05-02-2010 02:37 AM

I'd rather it be a hatch too, but I'd live with it. They just need to finish the bloody interior already..

Lexicon101 05-02-2010 03:08 AM

Flat-folding rear seats and I'm happy.

EDIT: I might prefer it as a hatch.. but a coupe's not a bad thing either.

Ditto. Making it a hatch is a nice way to add weight high up on the body. No thanks.

As long as the rear seats go flat or close to flat, it's all good.

So everyone agrees on flat rear seat. I'm in. I can put luggages in the trunk when I take s1 to air port.

Jordo! 05-02-2010 09:48 PM

I'll just remove mine. Who needs a back seat anyway.

My thoughts exactly. I like the look of a hatchback, but I always thought it just added weight.

You really think it would add that much extra if any... i think the weight that it might add you should head to the gym and lose some yourself.

Yes we want flat folding seats with 60/40 split and a hatch back version!!! :P

ditto. lol i'm a slightly built 140 lbs.

thinkaboutit 05-03-2010 05:30 AM

Perhaps using the rear window as a stressed member of the chasis makes a coupe body more rigid than a hatch? Combined w/weight savings for coupe (no separate rear window frame/smaller rear window) it may make a noticeable difference in handling.

That being said, I do like hatches better b/c I can easily fit bulky items like a surfboard or bicycle through the back. Toyota should consider cargo/passenger space in designing the FT86 b/c it's the only significant advantage it will have over a Miata since they are priced the same now.

Okay, I may be an American but I am not a fat American.

Dude, my body fat hovers around 10%. Let me hurl my backseat in the bin if I want to.

Sheesh...

The issue isn't just how much, it's where.

It is? They are?

Siriusly.Andrew 05-03-2010 01:58 PM

in Canada the MX-5 with a 6 speed manual (available only on the GS and above models, start at $33,495. I doubt the FT-86 will be that much in Canada.

And the Canadian spec sheet reports the Miata has 167hp, 140ft-lbs, and weighs 1145kg (2524lbs)

If I went with the lowest available option, I'd lose the 6 speed for a 5 speed, but the price would drop to $28,995 and weight would drop to 1130kg (2490lbs)

Either way, we know the pricing for the FT-86 will be lower than 28,000 even for the "fully loaded" option. Mind you thats the US pricing, so hell, who knows what we'll be paying in Canada.

Edit :: wow pricing in the States is rediculous. Sport MX-5 with a 5 speed is $23,710. Touring with a 6 speed is $26,550. Maybe they had a price update in the States and it hasn't come over to Canada yet -- otherwise it'd be cheaper for a Canadian to fly into Seattle, buy a car, pay the import/inspection/insurance fees at the boarder and drive it home.

azian_advanced 05-04-2010 11:54 AM

US cars has always been significantly cheaper than canadian cars. a lot of dealers here import cars from the states all the time..

Siriusly.Andrew 05-04-2010 12:48 PM

I know we've always paid more for ... ahem ... almost everything... but I'd imagine with the dollar so close, prices would be a little more reasonable, and closer to home. But still having a 5k difference between base model cars is ludicrous.

I hope something changes soon, it's not like our cars are that much better either :P

Although, that's a good point -- keeping the weight in the back would be a good idea... I'm so used to thinking about FF set ups.

It's not so much about front to back, rather keeping the CoG, low.
