Trunk Swap Risks?

I couldn't deiced for the longest time if I wanted the factory spoiler or not. But now that I find out the Monogram must come with the spoiler, it helped me realize I really don't want it. (Funny how that works)

I have a few questions though, first, the VIN numbers. I've heard that if you swap your trunk with someone the VIN numbers won't match which could lead to some kind of insurance issues or the like.

Also I'm afraid that the color's wont match up completely since the cars were painted different days, temperatures, humidity ect.

And finally, I will have my car Opti-Guarded ASAP after purchase. But the new trunk might not be depending on where I get it.

I'm a little picky because I want to have this car for a very long time and the little details drive me nuts so I'm trying to make the most informed decision possible. What do you guy's think?

993Fan 01-27-2014 02:01 AM

It's stuff like this that will bug you for as long as you own the car (sort of like settling for a color you don't really like because that's all they had left...).

Don't do it!

Low&Slow 01-27-2014 02:15 AM

Don't do it, just deal with the spoiler. No need for headaches, and worries!

DrDuquette 01-27-2014 02:20 AM

Carbon Fiber all the way man.

Rakshaa 01-27-2014 02:52 AM

I've ordered a Monogram as well and hate the factory Scion spoiler. I'm getting the spoiler removed and the holes sealed with rubber stoppers and getting the 5 axis spoiler installed over, which will cover the seals.

Maybe if he wants to rice it out.

I think you should see the FRS Spoiler first if you haven't already. See if you like it or not in person.

If you really really hate it... I would switch it to a spoiler you'll like.... either a TRD or maybe the BRZ one.

I wouldn't swap trunks because I would want my original trunk LOL.

Mister 01-27-2014 09:25 AM

I did do a trunk swap with a BRZ. There is a single VIN Sticker, I could not find it actually stamped in the metal. It was pretty simple to pull the sticker off, I would have moved it over but the sticker broke in the process. There are also services for purchasing a new sticker, so you can make sure it still matches, you just need to show you have the pieces of the old one.

To me it bothered me less to swap for free, then to spend $500 on a spoiler+install. The color matches exactly, and only those who own the twins know it was not OEM equipment.
I have documentation of the swap for those who would be concerned about an accident, but 99.999% of people would not even notice this anyway.

If you really dislike the look of the OEM trunk, I think it is a good option, and I could not really find any downsides.

I don't think 5axis covers the holes, TRD & Carsmo do and a few others I can't remember

Interesting post... I bought my black frs with the spoiler about 6-8 months ago and I still can't decide if I like... I have considered trading my trunk for wingless one... I'm sure the colors would match fine... But I hear there could be some alignment issues, and now the VIN... Idk I'm still thinking about it... The car looks awful sleek without the spoiler

funwheeldrive 01-27-2014 12:02 PM

I was wondering about this also. Since the monogram comes with the smart key package, wouldn't changing the trunks mess with the sensor in there, preventing you from easily opening it?

If it has the same module as the BRZ for the trunk (I'm not sure if it actually is) it is pretty straight forward to move those over. You need to swap out that whole assembly anyway when you do the swap or you will no longer be able to use your key in your trunk.

Trojan_SC 01-27-2014 01:20 PM

Don't swap trunks. Buy a TRD spoiler (best looking IMO) and be done with it. It covers all the holes and comes with the little stickers to cover them up. I don't like the Scion spoiler either, it's fugly to me and I'll be getting a TRD spoiler to cover that up. Swapping trunks is just welcoming a bunch of unnecessary headaches.

Pretty sure the 5 axis doesn't cover the holes

Pegasus 01-27-2014 01:48 PM

The biggest issue honestly is the corrosion, all sorts of stuff gets under there and water takes forever to dry out in the little crack. I've heard the the trunk is aluminum so it won't really rust but it still bothers me that the paint is being molested in there. And I cant put opti guard in there either so its just a pickle guess. Best option seems to be taking it off, optiguard everything and the TRD spoiler and slap it on there I guess.

Weird situation indeed...

How is that ricing out? Making your car lighter is ricing? Well I guess I'm gonna have to go and tell all the supercars made fully out of carbon fiber to stop ricing them. People use this term for everything now days. So stupid....

On that note here is my favorite video about that subject.

Interesting...TRD spoiler is similar to the 5 axis in looks correct? I will look into this.

My dealer had said the 5 axis would cover the holes. Time to do research! :bonk:

Did you find out if the 5 Axis does cover the holes? Monogram?

No spoiler looks better IMO. I had a low lip spoiler on my tC and it did look good. Yet no spoiler is more 'sleeperish'.

adprokid 03-08-2014 02:20 AM

Color matched CF trunk.

The downside is the cost and Fitment, there is a big chance that the panels gap might not be 100% like OEM.

woode 03-08-2014 08:38 AM

I swapped my BRZ Limited trunk with a FRS trunk after owning my car for like a week. It took about 20 minutes. Few months later - no regrets. I don't notice any difference, you would think it came how it is.

Aluminum is pretty light as it is.

jack43 03-08-2014 10:10 AM

No problems here with the swap. We kept our VIN stickers which came off easily with a razor blade.

I would just stick with the factory trunk lid and allocate the money towards other mods.

FRS_Jack 03-08-2014 10:42 AM

@Xerious ... same pain as you brother!

No unfortunately it does not. TRD lip does, though it's pricey to import

From what I've found, Carsmo-Stivo-Zeta perfomance-Seibon-TRD are thr only manufacturer making spoilets that do cover.
