FYI: Mileage left after the re-fuel light shows up ...
Our car has a gas tank of 13.2 gallon. Today I drove it 3-5 miles after the light is on, went to a gas station and put 11.6 gallon in. So there should be about 1.6 gallon left. With my gas mileage about 32 highway and 25 ish local, the minimum amount of mileage I have left is about 40 miles. Just FYI.

The manual states that the fuel light comes on when approximately 1.8 gallons are left in the tank, so you're close! I'm thinking the target was ~50 miles of not-WOT driving.

There's been a few threads about this, it definitely does come on prematurely, mine comes on when there is about 2.5-3 gallons left.
|
I've gone approximately 50 miles after the light came on, all freeway. Needle was almost all pegged on E.. was scary.

There's usually more capacity than the published volume. Connecting hoses plus some design margin in the tank will get you another gallon or so.
I have a Mini Cooper S with a published capacity of 13.2 gals and I've pumped in over 14 gallons many times. I haven't discovered my BRZ's actual capacity yet... |

I'm usually filling up with 10-11 gallons from the pump. The fuel light comes on way too early IMO.

Using Torque app, mine's come on consistently as soon as it hits drops below 2.5 gallons = so right at 2.4, the light comes on.
Before switching over to E85 from 93octane (and vice versa), I drive my car up & down the street at the E85 station trying to run my tank as low as possible. I went 64 miles once AFTER the light came on. When I filled up following that, I got exactly 13.01 gallons into my tank (filled up until the auto-shutoff, then filled up slowly until the pump cuts off again). |

Man! I usually go 30 miles (all highway) after the light goes on and I thought that was a lot. hahaha. good to know that I could make it a bit further. |
I usually fill up the moment my needle goes below the quarter marker. Never seen the gas light and hoping to never do.
|
Checked this last time I filled up: ~1-2 miles after the light triggered, ~24MPH lifetime average. Filled up just over 10 gallons. You should EASILY be able to go 40 miles with the fuel light on, possibly upwards of 60.

I just tested this on Friday night. I drove a good 55 miles after the light came on and when I went to top off it stopped right at 13.152.

My experience is that if you fill the car up soon after the light comes on you average about 11.2 - 11.3 gallons to fill up. I have gone longer and one or two time got a bit over twelve gallons in the car. Have never gone low enough to get 13 gallons in. I like that the reserve is a decent enough amount to let go a good bit further, but I do also think about keeping the DI in good operating condition by not letting it starve for full fuel delivery at any time. Maybe it is being overcautious, but I just don't see much sense in pushing such an advanced fuel control system into the area where lack of fuel pressure could cause any problems. There will always be a time where you go further than on the tank than would be optimal, but I would never consistently test how low I can take the tank, at the risk of damaging anything in the fuel deliver system. Just my opinion.

I always fill up right after the light comes on and within 5-10 miles of it coming on. I have put in between 10.02-10.43 gallons every time for Eleven straight fill ups.

I let the gas light come on for the first time this week. (station was closed for the delivery tanker to refill earlier in the week). The light came on and I drove another 12 miles. Then I filled it up at the same station I always go to. Took 10.3 gallons. Sadly I had only gone 258 miles - my lowest mpg to date, though I'm wondering if I forgot to reset the trip on time last fill up. I'm hoping that's what happened. I've been averaging 28-29mpg on the stock setup/tires mixed driving.
