Paint Protection Anyone?

Anyone masking their car for paint protection?

I was thinking of vinyl wrapping the entire car for $2000. I might as well right?

track_warrior 05-03-2012 03:59 AM

Im doing the dealer option since cars get pretty banged up on track days without PP.

Hawaiian 05-03-2012 12:10 PM

I'm doing the 3m paint protect as well it's just under 400 dollars

Subie 05-03-2012 12:12 PM

I'm waiting to see if Subaru comes out with a dealer option of their own. I may also contact my tint guy to see what price he comes up with.

is this on the whole car or just a clear front bra?

If you are referring to the factory option, its the front up to about 18" or so above the hood line. I saw it on the FR-S in Long Beach. You had to look really hard to see it, but it definitely covers all the most likely damage areas.

alluringreality 05-03-2012 01:33 PM

I don't know what car I'll buy, but regardless I'm planning to use Optimum Opti-Coat so the paint is low maintenance.

xravexboix 05-03-2012 01:38 PM

3M came to do the measurements on the car. We still have to test fit and see if any adjustments are needed, but the pattern should be out for the FR-S before the vehicle's official launch :)

Is that pattern available for all 3m dealers?

Spd229 05-03-2012 01:56 PM

hm...how many of the first 86 are paying up for that protection? I think you(dadhawk) mentioned before that it was something that once seen, could not be unseen.

Except the whole front of the bumper! It's just hood tape and fenders, no?

It will be once it's finalized. They still have to do the final test fit to make sure the film sticks on the aggressive lines of the car.

Is it a full pattern? For the full Hood and fenders and bumper. Or just for that factory version which is just the bumper n part of the hood

Usual hood and full bumper. Side mirrors, partial fenders, rear bumper "protector", in-handle "well" guards. I think he also did rocker panel ones this time! I'll have some pictures posted up once Peking comes back to have his installed. :w00t:

Clear Bra will run $4500-$5000 since it's a full custom job.

The Vinyl that's typically printed runs about $2000. because the material is thinner and it's more for advertising than it is for protection.

Frank Garrido, owner of Tint Factory, will be attending tonight. He does amazing work. http://tintfactory.net/

Read up on the amazing Crystalline Tint too. Had it on my last 2 cars... epic. http://www.motoiq.com/magazine_artic...tive-film.aspx

That was me but I have to add that the car I saw it on was at the LB Formula D pit and the Scion Racing truck and was covered in pollen/dirt so there was definitive line on the hood by the end of the day. That is really what I saw. I think anything short of a full hood cover would end up in the same result.

I seriously doubt any of us would let our car get as dirty as that one was, and I'd hazard a guess that as soon as you drove it about 10MPH the dust blew off.

The fender covers and such did not suffer as much from that and you really had to look for them to see the edges.

2000 05-03-2012 02:35 PM

I'd rather take the car to a trusted detailer and have them install it. Chances are there will be some factory swirl that you might want the detailer to polish out first anyways.

Boo I wanted a full Hood n fenders. I don't wanna see where the bra starts n stops
But for the sake of asking how much for what he's getting?

Would love for a full pattern to the hood and fenders!

So it isn't the "factory" paint protection that covers all that... It was an outside vendor?

MONTEMEX3 05-03-2012 02:57 PM

Is there a front bra available? don't bugs and critters all over the front on long highway trips

xravexboix 05-03-2012 03:00 PM

Full hood as a pattern wouldn't work. It would have to be a custom installation. If the pattern is even installed off by just 2mm, it throws everything off. So they (I would assume) rather just have an oversized sheet layed on and then trimmed after the install. Same with a full fender. I'll take pics of how it looks on my Camry Hybrid. Not too bad actually!!

All Toyota vehicles moved away from the old school "bras" and now just offer the paint protection film. BUT it has to be installed at the port before it comes to the dealership. If anyone wants that, contact your dealer and tell them to option that onto your vehicle for $399.

(Stealth Inc.) 05-03-2012 03:04 PM

I got quoted $2400-2500 for a full vinyl wrap by San Diego Vehicle Wraps.

Chenslee 05-03-2012 03:38 PM

I'm wanting to plasti-dip spray the whole thing week #1. I just inspected a friend's wheels that were dipped about a month ago and they still look great.

Can't decide if I want to do matt black, or matt clear over whatever color I end up getting.

2000 05-03-2012 03:47 PM

There are plenty of pictures of other cars with their front ends covered with clear bras.

Im getting the 3M clear bra on mine, not the Scion version, but an outside vendor. Itll be cut to fit. Im hoping to have the entire front bumper, front half of the hood, mirrors, behind each wheel, and possibly the leading edge of the a-piller and front part of the roof. The highways here are horrible and will beat the hell out of the paint.

RiskyTrousers 05-11-2012 02:17 PM

So what kind of quality and coverage should we expect from the port installed option? Seems to be a very good deal at $399 or less.

I'm considering the factory option because the quotes I got for pre-cut patterns (full bumper, partial hood, partial fenders, mirrors) are around $1500.
Full front end kit (custom job) complete hood and fenders are running around $2100.

This is a HUGE price differential! Is the extra $1000+ worth it! Please chime in if you have experience with both!
