That plastic below the windshield wipers

How is everyone keeping that plastic piece below the windshield wipers looking nice?!?! I don't know why by mine always looks bad no matter how much I wash it seems once it dries there is white residue or the finish is different in spots (some places the piece will be kind of shiny, others not).

303 aerospace protectant

SloS14 01-23-2014 01:05 PM

+1 on the 303. I do mine weekly. Also good for any exterior black plastic (wipers, mirrors, black part of rear bumper)

Black Wow. I applied about a year ago on all the plastic surface and it's still working great. Such an awesome product it is.

Check out this video for demonstration. YMMV, but like I said, it's been almost year and it's still there.

I ended up buying Back to Black and 303 aerospace protectant and used them both. They are very different products with different uses.

If you are dealing with an FR-S / BRZ you don't need to read any further than this paragraph: Buy 303, its easy to use, easy to cleanup, and makes the surfaces in your car repel dust etc (I don't think they advertise this). It made the inconsistant black on the plastic on the brz go away and be consistent. Overspray on windows and paint wiped off with some buffing with a microfiber cloth. Also i used on the hoses in the engine bay and they are all a nice consistent black now as well. Highly recommend.

Where there was a difference is on my 2002. The Back to Black is more of a deep cleanser / restorer for oxidised plastic pieces. The 303 would add a little richness to old surfaces but not really do anything about oxidation etc. But if you do use back to black BE CAREFUL and mask off the paint and windows. Do not do what I did. I did all the black plastic and rubber, which is a lot, on my 2002 outback sport. Took me about 1 hr. But I did not mask off and was just using a cloth which as I was doing the plastic was lightly smearing the B2B on the paint and windows around it. I figured it would wipe up like the 303. But then I spent over 3 hours trying to get the stuff off my paint and windows!!!! It took orange clean degreaser to get it off and then if I oversprayed the degreaser on the back to black surface I would have to do that surface over again. I am so happy I did not use the B2B on my '14 BRZ!

The 2 are very different: Back to black is good for hard plastic oxidised or faded exterior surfaces (works especially well on textured surfaces) such as bumper trim or in my case there was a big piece of plastic between the front and rear side windows that it worked a miracle on, but it did not do much for old rubber weather seals, while the 303 protects and gives a great even finish to plastic, and rubber (like window seals), already in good condition.

I didn't get to try black wow, based on the video from blueslate it might be similar strengths as back to black but easier cleanup and use less (I had to use almost an entire bottle of back to black for my 2002).

303 user here as well. I use it for all the black plastic and dash once a month. All still looks new

This! Adam's In and Out Spray is awesome too, basically Super VRT is aerosol form, for hard to reach areas. Perfect for detailing the engine bay and hard to reach grille and trim pieces.

303 aerospace is waterbased, so it won't last long outside the car.

i use cquartz carpro dlux. you get crazy beading when you wash the car.

kuhlka 04-04-2014 04:44 PM

Any waterless cleaner does the job. Motorcyclists tend to prefer Pro Honda Spray Cleaner & Polish (aka Plexus, aka Motul Wash & Wax, etc). Just spray and wipe. I keep a spray bottle of RainX in my trunk for the windows and Meguire's waterless cleaner for the rest. The car waterless stuff does an okay job on black plastic parts. The motorcycle stuff works better.

PreWow and Black Wow G35 - YouTube

You might give Black Wow Pro a try. New from the same makers of Black Wow. Claims of 4-6 months life are claimed. I have used it for about two months on a half dozen customers cars and I'm very happy so far.

GhostShield 04-15-2014 08:46 PM

Adams VRT and in and out spray.
VRT restored the back plastic on our G8 shop car. I applied it once and rubbed on it for a while with a micro fibre. Plastic still looks 100% better today and that was atleast 3 months ago and a bunch of washes ago

++++1 for VRT. oh and my bottle has lasted over a year and a half, goes a long way.

PS- The part the OP is referring to is called the taint. It ain't the windshield and it ain't the hood

Its an inferior product to 303. Sure, it makes the black trim look darker, but it only lasts for a week at most. I was very irritated to continually re work my trip pieces on one of my last cars so often. 303 was a miracle product that lasted much much longer.

akyp 04-17-2014 10:28 AM

Meg's Protectant works for me. I even use it on all the black plastics in the engine bay and they still look like new after almost a year.

Rayme 04-17-2014 11:19 AM

Garage style = wd40. Actually works great inside engine bay.

SloS14 04-17-2014 11:20 AM

I use 303 on mine. Want to keep it looking nice for the life of the car.

Pete156 04-17-2014 01:46 PM

303

Skurj 04-17-2014 08:35 PM

Lemon pledge on pretty much all black surfaces especially low gloss plastics

Rabble 04-19-2014 12:22 PM

Do you think pledge is ok for the kinds of heat cycles that a car goes through?

Is 303 ok for the interior dash, console, and door trim??

For the wash I used Optimum NO Rinse. It's not the best but it gets the job done in between professional washes. Also I live in an apartment so I can hose the car down every weekend.

Skurj 04-19-2014 04:26 PM

Lemon pledge has been used for years for detailing by many people. I've been using it on my bikes for a long time as well. Its not much different than plexus. (but a lot cheaper) and its a great between waxes wax...

MonoRaven 04-19-2014 04:53 PM

Ultima Tire and Trim Guard Plus (UTTG)
Lasts for months, has a very natural look, not greasy or shiny, won't run in the rain like 303 and most others. A couple of drops on a makeup sponge goes a long way so a bottle lasts forever.

Been wanting to try the Carpro dLux, I use Carpro PERL on my interior and it's awesome, love the Carpro products so for.

@ Rabble...303 is fine for interior...can be a little glossy and have that Armour All look but if you buff it good with a clean MF after applying you can get a nice satin look. I really hate a shiny look not even satin, that's why I like the PERL, it's very natural.

If you ever want to know anything about detailing look up Autogeek...everything you could ever want to know.

I've been using 303 about once every 8 weeks on my dash, doors, and leather parts in the interior and its been great. Not greasy or shiny like some other interior treatments.

I found this thread looking for the name of this part. I started reading your comment and got excited only to be comically let down.

Does anyone know what this is called? I am trying to buy this part as I am missing mine :\

8R6 06-25-2014 07:30 PM

my friend has some sorta black plastic/rubber restoring thing. forgot the name, but whatever it was, i used it on my previous e92 on all the black plastic parts and it made it look new (not like cheezy armor-all shiny, just new oem) and it lasted for months.

A cowl

Poodles 06-26-2014 12:33 AM

As it's already been said many times : 303 Aerospace

It's water based (this is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing, it lasts just fine even in rainy conditions) so doesn't leave things greasy. Use it to protect the vinyl top on a Miata and it lasts a good month. It will help oxidized parts, it depends on how bad the damage is (if it's really bad, you really need to be removing the oxidization with some kind of cleaner), but it soaks in. Not really any downside to it other than it leaves things a bit shiny.

Back to black: Used to use this on my old car on the rubber trim that was around all the windows. It was an older car, but it caused the trim to shrink and crack! Not only that, it attracts dirt and dust like crazy making it look worse than if you had done nothing. It's already been mentioned, but it's a royal pain to get off of the paint. NOT RECOMMENDED.

My Dad introduced me this stuff when I first bought my FR-S and I've been applying it weekly. This stuff is amazing! Sadly the guy we got the bottle from passes away before he told me where he bought the stuff. Do you know who carries this stuff?

303 is carried by most of the online detailing stores like AG , Autopia etc.

Paul_S 06-26-2014 10:35 AM

I have used Garry Dean's IUDJ, Black Wow Pro and Meg's Trim dressing with good results. I'm now trying out Solution Finish which contains carbon black I'm told instead of a silicone type product. After the first 30 days it's doing good. Might be something worth checking into if you are still looking.

Holy mother of shipping charges. Almost $9 for a 32oz bottle for a total of almost $29.

FYI available on Amazon for $19.79 shipped.

White64Goat 06-26-2014 04:12 PM

Adam's Polishes sells a product that is an aerosol and is called 'IN & OUT' and works well for this plus it sprays on and wipes off glass easily.
