Need I say more?

Edit: Yes, I will say more. It looks like the Mustang's almost $2,000 'Track Pack', 105 more HP, and 129 more lb-ft is only good for an advantage of roughly 1.5 around Willow Springs. That is not a tight track. Most impressive. GO BRZ, GO! But how does the review conclude? Quite nicely, actually.... ;) :happy0180:

Great find, thanks!

crash 05-02-2012 11:57 PM

very nice, thank you

Bwhahahah!!! Awesome!

I really do like the Mustang and with the track pack its about the same price as an FRS.

But it makes me think that without the pack the mustang would be slower around that track too...

That's not important to me anyway. I want a car that's fun, small and light with a good shifter and those are things that the Mustang ultimately doesn't have.

:)

blacknbean 05-03-2012 12:00 AM

sick review..this needs to be a sticky in the vs forum lol

DarkSunrise 05-03-2012 12:03 AM

Very entertaining to watch. Thanks for posting.

You could see the end result coming from a mile away though. The Mustang is a bigger, taller, heavier car with a live rear axle and more power... a muscle car. The BRZ is a low-slung, lightweight proper sports car. Not really a fair competition, they were designed with different goals in mind from the start.

Eureka 05-03-2012 12:03 AM

Interesting to see how the same driver (Randy Pobst) able to actually post FASTER lap time with the BRZ (1:30.32) vs. the FRS (1:31.15) as shown previously in the ignition episode of the FRS review. This really confuses me as we all saw the previous onboard comparisons of the two cars on Tsukuba?(dont remember) by Japanese drivers where the 86 beats the BRZ ever so slightly. I guess this just proves that neither car is faster or slower. All up to the driver's style (grip vs drift)

Awesome vid. Motor trend is really killing it with these video reviews

Nice video! Can't wait to get my BRZ!

Perhaps the more important takeaway from Randy's feedback is how he described the driving experience. The lap in the FRS was more lively. Do the FRS and BRZ come equipped with the same tires?

M-17 05-03-2012 12:14 AM

That's pretty much what I was exactly expecting from this review.

And dude is tall, I'm surprised he fit in the BRZ and still liked it.

Which is a larger circuit? I am willing to bet that the BRZ has the advantage on larger tracks that favor grip.

They do come with the same tires.

Thought so.

His reaction to the BRZ may have been more subdued because he'd already driven the FRS (that video came out earlier). Regardless, these casual lap times are so close I call it a wash.

It will be interesting to personally drive and compare the cars' differing spring & damper rates, but I think those comparisons will be much more subjective and focused on standard road use rather than tenth-of-a-second lap times.

Dark 05-03-2012 12:32 AM

Good review, BRZ is starting to look better and better every time.

FR-S is more tail happy, so it should be more lively.

I feel the same way. I would really like the chance to take both cars out for a back-to-back drive comparison. When I drove the BRZ, I was extremely subdued because I would prefer my internet fame to NOT kick-off as, "that buster who binned the first BRZ in America." I am wondering if what I am really looking for in a street car is the refinement of the BRZ paired with the apparently more playful suspension configuration of the FR-S. "Subjective," as you aptly put, is the key word.

I do not see myself tracking my BRZ, but then again, nothing is certain. Given what we have seen in video reviews and articles I am beginning to think that the BRZ's suspension configuration would be the choice for track days on America's larger style circuits. Again, as on the street, it may come down to how one person prefers his or her car set up as lap-times will probably be a wash. It is worth noting that from what I have seen, it seems you will go through less rear tires with the BRZ :D

crash 05-03-2012 12:47 AM

This review really solidified my decision to buy the BRZ. I was getting nervous with my pre order expected to be here at the end of the month. There are so many good high hp choices like the mustang and 135i. Better interiors too, quality wise. That mustang looked pretty sexy, especially with the unique green color.

But overall the BRZ is the better drivers car and I'm not too concerned about the slowness because coming from a dodge neon I know all about conservation of momentum.

Sport-Tech 05-03-2012 12:48 AM

Great comparison. A sports car versus a muscle car, both at the top of their game for their price point.

Lighting Red 05-03-2012 12:56 AM

I would also like to say that if Subaru offered the BRZ in any color even remotely close to, "Gotta-Have-It Green;" I would need to engage in some sort of ritualistic blood-letting in order to combat what would most certainly be a persistent hard-on.

Subaru BRZ Limited + Gotta-Have-It Green + flat black racing stripe down the driver's side = Who do I have to kneecap in order make that happen?

Though I'm personally not a racing stripe kind of guy, I wholeheartedly agree that there should be a green option! Everybody and their brother is going to buy this car in World Rally Blue. Green would be a welcome change. Statistically I don't think greens are very popular in recent years, so it makes sense why they wouldn't offer it as a standard option. Perhaps Scion will make one of their "series" cars available in a special green.

Enjoying this conversation.

70NYD 05-03-2012 01:06 AM

Why does the spec sheet say 2L turbocharged flat 4?

feedbag 05-03-2012 01:13 AM

Great video, definitely put me at ease for not getting the V6 Mustang. At the same time it was kind of a kick in the stomach because I didn't know you could get Mustangs in that color and if I did I might have wound up posting on some different forums :bonk:

Why have the haters been waiting for this review?

Subaruwrxfan 05-03-2012 01:18 AM

I really appreciated this review since I was considering a Mustang GT instead of the BRZ. This video really reassured me that I made the right choice with the BRZ. I drove 2 different 2008 model Mustang GTs (One Bullitt and a standard GT), and thought they were good, but they felt really huge and too comfortable for a small guy like me (5'8", 130 lbs). I was curious about whether the newer Mustangs were any different, sounds like they aren't. I want the BRZ to feel similar to a Mini Cooper S or Lotus Elise, light, nimble and snug. Based on this review and others, sounds like the BRZ is what I was hoping it to was.

Lytheum 05-03-2012 01:19 AM

subaru must know i was browsing local ford dealer sites today looking for a cheap mustang. this video reassures me that the brz is my kind of car.

Are you taking the piss? By all accounts it's a night and day difference.
Driving a 2008 and thinking its an accurate representation of a 2011+ model surely is way off base.

Have you read autoblog.com at all? Every time a BRZ/FR-S article is posted on that site, the amount of knuckle-draggers that come out en-masse against the cars make the Great Ape house at your local zoo look like a college campus. It's douche-baggery at its finest :bonk:

Capt Canuck 05-03-2012 01:26 AM

Sure, but if its the one they were waiting for, the Mustang would have delivered the BRZ a serious bumming.
But that didnt happen :-)

Have you driven one? Does the 2011+ model feel smaller? Lighter? Sharper steering? I'm serious, I really want to know. Maybe I'll just test drive one tomorrow and answer my own questions...

I had an '11 V6 for a rental at Xmas and I genuinely liked it.
I'd had an '0something before as a rental and the engine was just so poor.

I really think the '11+ Mustangs are great value - yes they are not the BRZ/FRS, they go about things in different manners. I'm not buying a Mustang anytime soon and definitely wouldn't pick a V6 over a BRZ/FRS, but ya go drive one and see what you think :-)
