simple mods

What are some simple or cheap mods that can be appreciated in everyday driving? I'm not looking to spend thousands or even a few hundred.

I don't track and I don't drift but I do like to break the back end out every once in a while on turns. I do have the flossy shift knob which I thought was a great purchase?

Any other ideas? I'm still on the edge for a lighter flywheel..

Chen 01-18-2014 09:53 PM

Exhaust.

Thornley 01-18-2014 09:54 PM

N1rve 01-18-2014 10:05 PM

Exhaust system... tint...

Frost 01-18-2014 10:08 PM

Tint. Tires.

AllStar0419 01-18-2014 10:22 PM

Mtec shift springs. They make the shifter feel more solid and gears engage smoother. Less than 40 bucks shipped.

Burrcold 01-18-2014 10:26 PM

Agreed. Tires and exhaust were fairly cheap, but were great additions. I've actually found updating small interior pieces to be the most satisfying though (you do spend the most time inside the car after all).

TRD fuel cap cover ! Does nothing at all, but you smile every time you get gas.

Anything that makes you smile when you get gas has got to be good!

wrxgoose 01-18-2014 10:51 PM

tint is a very useful one, especially in NY (but i can't remember if it's legal there for passenger cars), and some lug nut locks (depending on where in NY you are.)

i say the second because i used to live on the island, but my sisters were in the city for a couple of years, and they had some big problems with that.

GT86drifter 01-18-2014 10:53 PM

go autox its $40 its a driver mod

mike_ekim1024 01-19-2014 01:27 AM

A replacement for the RC car radio antenna is always good. Shark fin or stubby.

A trunk lid liner (a BRZ part) really dresses up the trunk.....:)

Vincenttam 01-19-2014 06:38 AM

I did this. It weighs virtually nothing, and helps deaden some of the tininess coming from the trunk. I think it was under $50 for the panel and fasteners.

ripper 01-19-2014 08:39 AM

kartboy short shift kit for around $250...

HOw is this comparable to one of those k&n air intake filters that promises a few more HP?

kodyo 01-19-2014 12:19 PM

I'd go K&N drop in filter for little more pep.
Weathertech floor mats for easy interior clean up.
Tires when you get around to replacing stockers, extra grip feels amazing.
Tint is pretty nice too.

The same guys reviewed the K&N and it measured a 5.7 hp increase compared to the 5 hp APEXi produced.

Some people have a great "relationship" with K&N, but I don't. The K&N setup I had on my '99 Carrera oiled up my air mass flow sensor, causing the CEL to go on. I didn't want to deal with that again so I went to the APEXi dry filter setup. .7hp was not enough for me to go back to K&N.

Clear side marker
Custom plaque for that area where the seat warmer switch goes
HID
K&N filter
LED

Luis_GT 01-19-2014 12:35 PM

Yospeed center console plaque to cover up the empty square
K&N Drop-in Filter
Mtec Shift spring
Motul 300 oil to replace the factory fill (one of the best mods ever, makes shifting extremely smooth)

Demandred7 01-19-2014 10:06 PM

GrimmSpeed strut tower brace - immediately noticeable difference. The whole front end seems more bolted together. Easy as pie installation (unless you don't know how to torque bolts).

How many bottles of the motul 300 is needed?

Better be cheap seeing as it doesn't cost them much to setup cones in a damn parking lot.

LEDs in the foglights to match the HIDs, pretty cheap and very easy to do.

Don't forget a calibrated torque wrench otherwise you can risk shearing the studs.

dnieves 01-20-2014 11:47 AM

cheap (off the top of my head):

$20- carbon fiber license plate frame, $10- interior LEDs, $5- license plate LEDs, TRD caps (fuel/radiator/oil), $20- black vinyl sheet for bottom portion of front bumper, $20/4ft- Q-MAT (like DynaMat) the trunk, $free- plug up sound tube with car lighter cover from glove compartment, $66- OEM all weather mats (or Weathertech with the optional FR-S logos), $time- if you have the waxes & cleaners- thoroughly detail exterior/interior, and $6/can- Scotchguard seat for unintended spills.

Where did you get that? Looks pretty good!

ericmpena 01-20-2014 12:02 PM

Upgrade all of your interior and exterior lighting with Diode Dynamics. You can probably do all of the car minus low beams and fogs for under $100.

I love this key fob holder! So much that I just ordered 2 more. They're great with the BRZ smart key...and they match the interior.

I used 4 bottles between the transmission and rear diff.

transmission takes 2.2L and diff takes 1.3L

Seat time at a track day or autocross. You don't need to be a track junkie to realize the joys of proper heel/toe downshifts on your favorite onramp/offramp/twisty road.

I hope so! Lol. I'll have to check.

ericmpena 01-20-2014 03:44 PM

It does already have that in the trunk! Thanks for pointing that out.

This. I just switched everything over to LED (interior and exterior with switchback turn signals) and 6k HIDs (with the exception of the tail lights since I put Buddy Clubs in) from Diode Dynamics for around $240 shipped.

Hell yeah! My favorite so far is the Stage 4 trunk LED strip. My sub enclosure was blocking the light from the factory location, so this strip was exactly what I was looking for. Installed it in about 2 minutes.
