Traded in my MK6 GTI for the FRS!!

Well, as the title says I am a new owner of a WhiteOut FRS:burnrubber:

Wow is this car FUN!!!! I cannot wait for my first track day! (and yes the lack of torque is noticeable).

I need to order toyota all weather matts, shark fin, toyota badges, arm rest and... I think that is all.

Any recommendations on which company shark fin to buy?

Welcome to the club.

However, I don't think I could ever give up the 2.0T if I had a car with it. I really love that engine.

iag48st 01-18-2014 12:58 AM

That TSI 2.0 is a great motor with a lot of INEXPENSIVE potential for power.

That being said, I was getting bored of just going fast in straight line, and by fast I mean going as fast as a stock GTI can go.

In one night of hooning around the FRS has made me laugh and giggle like a little school girl. GTI never did that.

Burrcold 01-18-2014 01:01 AM

Congrats! I traded in a MKVI GTi as well. Don't regret it one bit!

iag48st 01-18-2014 01:02 AM

^ Thank you sir.

Cattronic 01-18-2014 01:59 AM

Haha I had a moment where I wanted to trade my frs in for a GTI...
'Twas only a moment though ;)

The GTI is a fabulous car though.

iag48st 01-18-2014 02:01 AM

GTI is great car, just boring. Very nice interior, refined and comfortable.

dave77 01-18-2014 02:02 AM

GTI's are nice, but you're gonna feel like you have something special now in your garage. :)

nzer 01-18-2014 02:27 AM

Welcome to the club.

I'll have both soon. Just ordered my wife a new mk7 Golf R to go with my TRD86.

Only issue I'll have is her gloating when she is faster around the track. Pointing out the extra HP and 4wd she will have in her car won't help!

Easy to make power on, yes.
Maintenance nightmare. Cam followers, fuel pumps, carbon buildup on intake valves, etc etc.

Congrats OP. Also came from Volkswagen, had a mk5 r32.

Here in Canada, the FR-S comes with 2 sets of mats...the standard carpet ones, and the all-weather rubber ones. The all-weather mats have no better coverage than the carpet mats, and they quickly fill up with snow and water. I made do with them last year because there really wasn't a better option yet. Now there is. If you are trying to protect your carpet/floor, try a set of WeatherTech floor liners...much better product.

kmbkk 01-18-2014 09:10 AM

Welcome to the club; great color choice BTW!

Calavera 01-18-2014 09:33 AM

Agree, great color and welcome!

You will enjoy driving the 86. Its not about straight line speed, its not about having a plush cushy interior that isolates you from your environment. This car just places you right smack dab in the middle of it and rewards you with that connected feeling.

I also came from a heavily modified Stage 2 GTI that was tracked... Yes it was fast, in a straight line and it cornered exceptionally well due to the heavily modified suspension, but the feedback between the driver and the road was quite numb.

As for your choice of floor mats... get weathertechs... you wont regret it.

Congrats on the trade! I've got a mk6 GTI and FR-S in my garage so I can appreciate them both, but the FR-S is really special when you get it out on twisty roads or the track.

:burnrubber:

The cam follower issue was actually solved with the TSI engine on the mk6, but carbon buildup is definitely still an issue with the VW DI engines.

Welcome !!!!!

mush 01-18-2014 11:47 AM

Congrats
Dont forget about clear side makers. Cheap mod that looks good especially on whiteout

I've seen faulty cam followers from guys who had TSI's.

I came from a MKV GTI and I miss the power and torque so bad! I was stage II.

BUT no regrets on the FR-S.

It basically can't fail in TSI, it's a completely different style of follower. I had a BPY FSI and I loved it! I beat the shit out of it for 120K. If you keep the oil full you'll never have follower issues anyway. I burned about 1 quart every 1K miles.

I know someone who knows you. lol.

Jon Roberts.

Pickleahoy 01-18-2014 03:34 PM

Grats. I wish I could trade mine in right now, but the negative equity would kill me. Have to save up some more...

iag48st 01-18-2014 05:37 PM

Thanks everyone! Last night I ordered the Toyota matts from amazon and I just read everyone's suggestions. I'll be retuning the toyota matts and ordering the weather techs. Thanks again.

As a prior MKVI GTI owner, don't resist...let the twins into your life. You won't regret it one bit. :D

I traded a 5 month old mkvi tdi....and haven't regretted a single moment of losing $$$

I truly didn't like the new tdi, especially since mkiv was my love and the mkvi was totally a different car
A dissapointment

As a moderator on golfmk6 I can say that none have failed on TSIs. The design doesn't allow it.

All that said, as one very strongly considering leaving a wonderfully modified stage 2 GTI, this thread makes me want to jump over to a twin even more.

JDLAutoDesign 01-19-2014 10:54 PM

Bender from GolfV/GolfVI? LOL small world :) Ronnie formerly of Eurojoke/Gaysis lol.

Anyway OP welcome. We do both VAG and FT so if you need anything shoot me a PM

Hah, I remember your username now that you mention it. Dare I say you posted a pretty extensive review on a unibrace at one point?

I actually participated in a unibrace GB on that website some time ago, for my R32.

Hey Ronnie! Glad to see you are still in the industry and not over there anymore!
