Oil coolers

I don't know where to even begin to look for information on these, but this is the last piece to the puzzle for my turbo kit I guess and I was wondering where is a good place to look for these? I've watched a couple videos and read some things about needing one because the oil already runs high in these cars (200 range) and it'll easily hit 230 in no time.

where can I find a good oil cooler? I tried searching this entire forum for it with no luck. I doubt it'll help but I have a greddy turbo kit (with other stuff) just making sure I don't miss anything before bringing it all in to get installed

It's not absolutely necessary to run an oil cooler but its greatly recommended to do so especially if you're running FI. Everyday driving shouldn't be an issue without one depending on where you live but if you plan on seeing any kind of track time you definitely wanna look into it.
Here's a few oil cooling solutions as well as a link for FT86speedfactory which sells some oil coolers as well. Perrin's oil cooler has seen some pretty good reviews based on others thorough the forum and ft86speedfactory generally has them in stock also.

If you want one that's more OEM-looking, and want to spend a little less, here's a DIY on the Forester oil cooler:

This is what I plan to do in the spring.

I have a vortech sc and was hitting 276*f at the track without oil cooler. Now i have a sard oil cooler and oil temp not passing 230 at the same track.

did you have issues with street driving and high temps?

Mersd 01-07-2014 07:36 PM

No problem with temp on streets unless on a canyon run without oil cooler.

I'm running the Perrin Oil Cooler, would recommend if you are tracking or driving hard on the road. Check my thread, I have a ton of pics, details, and data points.

Thanks gents! helps a lot more than you would know!

Does anyone know if the Perrin Oil cooler will still mount properly if you have an intercooler? I have the AVO setup on order

I'm going to say that it should be fine, as long as the AVO intercooler does not sit in front of the bumper beam, but rather, underneath it.

I found something interesting the other day. Not cheap, but something different. V-mount oil cooler.

Thanks for the compliment. Anyway, not trying to thread jack, just figured I'd help out :)

If anyone has any questions regarding our oil cooler/fitment, please don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot me a PM :D

Looks nice, especially for those running a FMIC. Do you have a link to it?

lexusb3 01-09-2014 07:42 PM

Here you go sir. I was thinking of doing this route when i go FI since the FBM Kit (and most kits) is FMIC.

swift996 01-10-2014 09:27 AM

Nice, looks nifty. The core looks much better than the other units out there for sale and with a custom shroud I guess it's not way too overpriced. I wonder if someone else stateside will develop something similar.

If you take the price of a good radiator and a good oil cooler kit, you're right at $1200 anyways.

True and fair enough. Hard to tell if this one will even fit behind grille though?

Anyhow interesting stuff.

This is actually an aftermarket oil cooler by a JDM company called Revolution. You can find it in japanparts.com.

ahaghshenas 10-03-2014 04:23 PM

I got the Cusco oil cooler, which is not really able to keep oil temps down with spirited driving but as soon as you relax the temps fall pretty quick and It is great at bringing the oil temp up from a cold start.

I am interested in the new AVO oil cooler and wonder if it would be possible to have both coolers fitted as I dont wanna trash my Cusco one and also would need new radiator pipes as they where cut for the Cusco cooler to feed off.

Now I have noticed on the Cusco website a picture of my cooler with a oil temp/pressure attachment between the cooler and the oil filter

http://www.cusco.co.jp/en/jpg/Water%...r%20New_A4.jpg

So in theory this might be able to be done.

Questions:
1> Does this sound like an effective setup?

2> Which arrangement would be more effective, AVO air cooler on first and Cusco water cooler on top or vise versa or no difference?

mike the snake 10-03-2014 05:10 PM

Does anyone know if the takeoff plate is a thermostatic type plate on this kit?

1. In theory it could work, but first have to see if you could close the hood with the AVO plate + cusco plate + oil filter...

2. To get the lower oil temp put the cusco first.

3. Keep us post :)

Am I dreaming but doesn't this bypass the radiator so effectively reduces the total cooling capacity of the coolant loop? It also means that the oil is getting cooled by the hottest water in the engine!

Anyone running the JR oil cooler on a NA motor? Trying to get/use necessary components before I'm able to get the kit.

Anyone have any info on the Skunk2 Oil Cooler? Any ideas how it performs compared to say, Perrin? Curious what people's opinions are on it. Thanks!

The thing with the oil coolers

They are all made from aluminum (maybe you could find one or two made from other material, but no for high hp applications). So the difference and is; and is a big one the number of rows and the position of the cooler, also you could use vents to force more air trough the cooler...
I don't like the oil to water cooler (car that came with FI also came with that oil cooler, and have to be upgraded as hp increase).

Is my opinion base on constant moderate hot climate (tropic).

Thanks for the info. To elaborate, I live in a relatively warm climate (texas), so heat can be an issue I would assume. Currently I'm NA but planning on going SC. That's why i'm curious which cooler would be best suited for such a task.

Sleepless 03-06-2015 12:34 PM

The Jackson Racing cooler is a better choice than Perrin's since JR's has a greater capacity.

I've been running this oil cooler for a while now and has been working well ... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Thermosta...item3cdc773be6 ...

Told them what it was for and they even included the spacer for under the thermo sandwich plate at no extra cost so pretty happy with that.

Do you have any numbers on what the temps are staying at? This seems to be a killer deal!

sam69 03-08-2015 09:24 PM

It's been pretty hot here and haven't logged any temps but do keep an eye on them and at around 30 deg C temps oil temps sit around 185 to 190 and with spirited driving like some hard 0 to 100 runs etc the highest I've noticed so far was approx 220 deg (faren).

I have mine mounted right over in the RHS so it's not in front of the intercooler radiator and have ducted some airflow towards it but I know it could cool better with more air flow.

JohnnyGT86 03-10-2015 12:40 PM

thats pretty legit.

Nice! Indeed

Any chance to see how it performs? Temps as DD, track, back roads.
